My Family and I are planning a camping trip to the Fort- and it will also be my family's first time camping in a tent. I have camped growing up but it has been awhile, We have our reservations and are going to be at the fort in Mid June for a Week- My question is this, I know there are comfort stations but I wanted something for the middle of the night- Can someone recommend a portable Toilet that would be easy to use, maybe just wheel it over to where ever I need to dump it no mess , no smell etc. I doubt my wife and daughter will have anything to do with it but I think my Son and i would make use of it in the middle of the night / early morn?

Btw how does that work at the Fort with the Port o Toilets? dumping etc

Thank you for your help,

I think what you want is considered a "cassette" toilet. We previously had one at a permanent vacation site we have for when additional family members came and tent camped. The black water ends up in a detachable section of the toilet with a handle that you can just pick up and carry. The one we had a swivel spout to make it easier (and cleaner) to dump. They are available in various sizes and price ranges at lots of places like Wal-Mart and Camping World.

I have never tent camped at Ft. Wilderness but previously I know people have contacted cast members and been directed to dump at an empty full hookup site. Just make sure to wash up any spills. Others have indicated if they only have "liquids," they dump in the comfort station toilet but hopefully there may be a tent camper on here with more advice.

BTW, I love the comfort stations at the Fort. We are more used to State Park bathhouses and the Fort is like comparing the Ritz-Carlton to Motel 6!

Hope you and your family have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yay:

Thank you for your help,

I have one of the ancient porta potties I bought back in 1974 and just used it recently when the A/C in our home went out and we slept in the trailer for 3 or 4 nights and when needed they are worth their wt. in gold. I have absolutely no experience in using one at FW so all the rest is sort of a guess. As far as FW I now see a lot have an adjustable spout on them and with that you should be able to dump them directly into the sewer access as long as you have that available. Otherwise I guess you can carry it up to the comfort station and dump it there. Mine doesn't have any sort of spout and unless you flush and dump when it's flushing you can get a lot of splashing if dumping mine into a full toilet bowl, but that doesn't seem to be an issue with the newer ones.

Oh, forget to say, especially since you are going in the summer, I would recommend you add a little of the deodorizer to the cassette since you mentioned smell. If I recall correctly it didn't take much to keep that small tank odor free.

Well, I'm sure many of the folks around here will not be surprised, but I have a Porta Potti Web page you can take a look at.

A potti & a potti tent work fine at FW to avoid those late night trips to the comfort station. :thumbsup2

:scared1: That is just TOO FUNNY and has so much great info who would have thought ... great job and documenting this obscure aspect of camping.

Just be sure if you buy one spend the extra money and get a name brand one. I recomend Thetford because you can get parts for them unlike the cheap Chinese ones.
I purchased one from Ebay for $35 that was still it the box. Doesn't look like it has ever been used.

One more thing to consider is when using a porta-potty is carrying the black water tank to be dumped. If you are camping in a partial hookup and are given the number of a empty full hookup site by the front desk, you can simply drive over with the black water tank...but, if you are dumping in the comfort station, I would recommend bringing a folding luggage carrier (those made of aluminum with the small wheels). Those tanks can be heavy and if you have to walk more than 50 yards...well, lets just say you'll be glad you brought the carrier.

Walmart sells the deodorant for porta-potties in their RV section and I HIGHLY recommend using it.

Hope this helps

Edited: almost forgot to mention that you will need to buy the special RV TP to use with the porta-potty...it easily dissolves in water. Regular TP will clog the potty.

Simple solution, how about just a dark colored water bottle with a large top..
Why do boys need anything else more complicated? You not going to sit on
it.

I would bet that in the wee hours (pun intended! :lmao:) that the OP's wife and daughter will think that the porta potty looks awfully convenient!

Also to note: Sears brand porta potties are made by Thetford.

For ease of use we use the little purple packets of chemicals you can get at RV places and Wal Mart. Less messy than measuring the liquid stuff.

Not true. Any TP that is septic safe is fine for a RV or porta pot. They dissolve the same as RV TP and usually less.

This is a crappy subject but a nessesary one. When we camped at the fort way back on 1996 we didnt have one in our popup. I wish we did. I agree with the others when they say get a brandname. They will last longer and not leak after a few uses. I've heard some of the cheap ones dont seal up so well. Someone mentioned the luggage buggy. I couldnt agree more we have one in our trailer and use it for everything from garbage to firewood to beach toys. We got ours at a second hand store for $5. Good luck on your search.

We don't buy the RV TP but do get 1 ply for better breakdown.
