My first DIS vent...

EROS, there's nothing wrong with different opinions, but you tend to force feed everyone your opinion and if they don't agree with you, you try to hurt their feelings. That's why people get upset with you, no one comes here to have their feelings hurt. There's a big difference between agreeing to disagree and trying to belittle someone because they don't agree with you. A little kindness goes a long way.

I learned this song in elementary school:

I'm proud to be me, but I also see
You're just as proud to be you.
We might look at things a bit differently
But lots of good people do.
It's just human nature so why should I hate you
For being as human as I?
You get as you give if you live and let live
And we'll all get along if we try.
I'm proud to be me, but I also see
You're just as proud to be you, it's true
You're just as proud to be you.

OK, Suite, which DIS member(s) did I belittle in this post??? Did I call anyone rude, insufferable, or condescending???

Hey, there's great nobility in being a warrior and defender of one's country. My own father was a Captain in the U.S. Army and was decorated in combat.

As a kid, I lived through the desolation and destruction of VIETNAM. I knew families who lost their brave sons there. I cry every time that I get to the WALL.

Soldiers carry out orders. That's their job. I've never had a problem with the American fighting man/woman. Our volunteer force is indeed the mightiest in the world.

I DO take issue with politicians who are so willing to sacrifice American lives. I DO take issue with a President who has his own bloodthirsty vendetta to depose Saddam at almost any cost. Soldiers have been dying for century upon century for the mistakes in judgment of their leaders..........

I DO thank you for serving your country. I DO thank you for putting your life at risk to defend our nation. .........

Personally Eros, I thought that post was very eloquent. . .

Perhaps I was out of line with my comments.. . would you care to explain your comment about "double standards" ?

As far as I know, with the exception of a couple pictures that crossed the guidelines, you've never had anything you've said as far stating your opinons deleted. . I'm just curious as to why you feel like you're so picked on by the mods?

I don't have time to read more than the first page of this post, but I just wanted to say, well said AirForceRocks!!! As a military wife myself I can understand where your feelings are coming from.

You are appreciated as is my husband and all of his collegues throughout the different services.

:bounce::wave::bounce:

Ignoring Eros and Willy for now LOL ;)
...I just want to mention my problem with threads like this.

Yes of course I *respect* the *military*....but.....

I believe ALL...I mean ALLLLLLLL jobs in this great U.S. are valuable...not just the military jobs.

My husband PHYSICALLY digs the steel you use for your guns and weapons and YOUR tanks and your equipment. You would not HAVE a military without all the other people behind the scenes who never EVER get thanked for what they do. My delightful husband and all his co-workers face dangers different than gun blasts but have you ever seen a mine explosion accidentally kill or maim a mine worker? I have. Have you ever seen a steel crusher crush a human body (by accident of course) ? I have...and I DEEPLY respect the job these men do.

Do you appreciate the store clerks who ring up your purchases and the people who fill your gas tank?

I think it's a shame when someone thinks their job is more important than someone elses, military or not.

I hold great respect for the garbage collectors, the sewage plant workers and ALL members of this great country who work hard......

Brenda,

I have the utmost respect for the Military. Without them our lives would be much different. We as a society take much for granted. We don't have to sleep with one eye open due to the scarifices people like you make. Thank you!!!

I think it's a shame when someone thinks their job is more important than someone elses, military or not.

DisMNagain,

Did AFR direct this at your husband or the garbage collectors? Did she say she didn't respect others? This was directed at someone that she chose to rename nameless and nowhere did she was more important.

I do appreciate the military and all that you do and the sacrifices you make for your families and mine too. I think you are right in the respect that some people view the military as basically being these blood thirsty individuals or that want to run around playing "Rambo."

Not to hijack this thread in a different direction, but yes I was brought up to respect people and not look down on them regardless of the jobs they hold. As a matter of fact, I have more respect for the anyone in the service industry for what they do than the CEO's of the world.

Back to your regular Dising!;) :D

I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO!!!

My brother is a Master Sergeant in the Army. He enlisted when he was 17 (with my parents permission). He's 37 now and has loved every moment of his job. I am proud of him and all of the other members of the armed forces.

My FIL had a short stint in WWII. He was sent over to Normandy just a few days after D-day. His first day there, he was a victim of an explosion. Shrapnel tore through his thigh and buttocks. Fortunately he was with his unit and they were healthy enough to carry him to safety.

My Uncle served in Vietnam. I know he is haunted by the images of that war, but he was also a hero and doesn't brag about it. He was a helicopter pilot and was shot at and saved his helicopter from crashing and killing the passengers on board.

My father was in the U.S. Air Force BEFORE he became a U.S. citizen (he's from England). He served four years and was proud to represent our country.

Our flag flies proudly outside our home. My heart aches for all the military families that are separated for the holiday season. Thank you for keeping our country safe.

AFR I am sorry that your thread was hijacked but I did want to at least tell you that you and your family are appreciated for making sacrifices to help keep me and my family safe.

Coming from an Army family I am only too familiar with the sacrifice and stress that military families endure especially during times of war. How anyone can not at least appreciate what you do for them is beyond me. You don't always have to agree with US policies to always support our troops.

Please see my post on sending holiday greeings to the military:D

Thank you and all our service men and women.

I would like to add that I too appreciate all of our service men / women. It's them who make this country safe.

Now on another note - Nikole - you lucky dog you!!!!;) ;) ;)

As a daughter of a paratrooper in Korea I have always had the upmost respect for the Military. Many of the freedoms we enjoy today are due to the sacrifices made by the men and women in the Military.

There is a BIG diff. between military and store clerks, garbage collectors, etc.
I haven't noticed a store clerk or garbage collector laying their life on the line for anyone??????????????????????

Man the way some people can twist a post around here.
You wouldn't be a store clerk or garbage collector if military wasn't protecting this country. geez

AFR great post! Thank you to everyone in our Armed Forces!

I would like to point out to everyone a few important dates over the next few days.

December 6 - D Day/Normandy WWII. This allowed us to defeat the Germans.

December 7, 1941 - the day Pearl Harbour was attacked.

I think it fitting that AFR posted what she did at this time. We still need to be bound together as a Country. History has always involved the military, force, and death. It is unavoidable to lose human lives. It is also very unfortunate.

DisMNAgain: while your opinion is appreciated you picked the wrong thread to state those opinions.

As always EROS you keep things lively.

WillyJ: I think you are on the right track and need not apologize.

My goodness Brenda...who's fighting?

And personally I thought it was a very appropriate thread to make my statement.

I was under the impression that most threads went many different directions on open boards...that's what makes it fun, right?

And Brenda, feel free to disagree with me, but please stop saying that I'm trying to fight with you. While I might disagree with many things you say or do, that doesn't mean I'm trying to pick a fight.

(see, just because YOU disagree with ME, doesn't make me feel like you're trying to "pick a fight" with me...get what I mean?)

:)

AMEN TO THAT! I also appreciate the military, but you are 100% correct DisMNagain when you say there are so many other underappreciated jobs out there!!! For as many critics there are for the military, there are twice as many people who stand behind them. Last time I checked, no one was standing up for the garbage collectors, people who clean public restrooms, or a myriad of other jobs that get very little respect (well, until you made your post :D ).

My edits include only this paragraph (I have not deleted anything, but I just finished reading the rest of the thread), but I just wanted to say to the OP that I don't think DisMNagain was trying to start a fight at all! You seem to be on quite the defensive with this thread, as I'm sure it's your original reason for writing it. That still doesn't mean you have the right to think that anyone who adds something beyond a "thanks, you're great, I love the military" is trying to fight with you!!! If you were looking for only self-serving "thank you" comments, an open forum such as this is NOT the place to expect them!! And BTW, I have past and current relatives in the military and I'm in no way a detractor from their work, honor, or sacrifices (since such a disclaimer seems to be needed for this post)!!!

Not to detract at all from the garbage collector's, janitors, and millions of other people who work very hard at their jobs in order to support their family.... But I just don't agree that it compares to what members of the Armed Services go through, especially in times like these.

In fact, some of those members of the Armed Services ARE garbage collectors, janitors, and store clerks who are being asked to leave their homes and families and travel thousands of miles to protect the rest of us. Some of them are "lucky" enough to get to stay home, but they have still agreed to make themselves available to put their LIVES on the line at any given moment. Most of these people are sacrificing thousands of dollars in salary for the privalege of serving our country.

My job doesn't begin to compare and my husband's job doesn't begin to compare. Tonight my husband and I will be with our kids and not sleeping in some dusty tent in a foreign land.

I truly thank those Men and Women who have voluntary made the choice to give so much of their personal lives and freedom.
