and is now worried about our dining reservations.

We have reservations at Play and Dine at Hollywood and Vine breakfast, Norway Princess Breakfast and Chyrstal Palace Character Breakfast.

Can I call someone and request a special diabetic meal? Who do I call?

I may be misled, but I thought he could pretty much eat what everyone else ate in moderation. That is his problem though, he doesn't eat in moderation!!

Any help or advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I am type 2 diabetic as well. He can eat virtually anywhere he wants, in moderation. You won't need to order special meals or anything.

I'm sure his doctor gave him some guidlines about types of things to eat and what to have in moderation. He'll want to limit the cabs, which turn into sugar in the body. That doesn't mean he can't have any, just means you want to not go overboard.

At Crystal Palace, I was able to eat well. They have sugar free syrup for his waffles, etc.

Basically you want to try to eat healthy. Know that one meal won't blow things too badly either (for Type 2. Type 1 is a whole different story). You ARE on vacation.

Here are the Eating Out guidlines from the American Diabetes Association:

Hope that helps.

I would suggest going over to the "disABILTIES!" forum. Diabetes and WDW is an ongoing topic of discussion.

My dad is a type II diabetic, and I'll echo Seattle Mark.

This may not be the trip for Alfredos, or any other "carb fest" meal. But if he eats in moderation, with plenty of protein, lots of water, and vegetables, he'll be fine anywhere.

My dad got his under control pretty completely with exercise, which he'll get plenty of at WDW, and cutting out sugared pop and sweets. But it does take discipline. And the thing to remember is that you can't do it for him....you may want to skip the buffets and make other arrangements if he is not likely to engage in moderation. You can't do it for him, but you don't need to make it EASY for him to be irresponsible. Ohana may be a better choice where they bring a skillet, rather than a buffet with unlimited french toast (they will bring out more Mickey waffles at Ohana, but they have to bring them)....

I am a type 2 as well. Yes, you can eat almost anything you want, and if he doesn't eat in moderation, that is one of his problems right there..lol.

I am sure his doc has already told him how to eat, and what types of foods to eat together to make his body work more effciently at burning sugar. I am already off medication after only 3 months...so tell him to follow the docs orders, as he certainly doesn't want to be on meds forever.

Hi - another type 2 diabetic here. I can eat at restaurants at disney with no problem. I just eliminate starches (ie... all potatoes, bread, pasta, noodles, rice) from my diet. I eat salads(stay away from french dressing, rasp vinegrettes, any sweet dressing), veggies, meat, cheese, eggs. With burger platters at counter services he can get carrots instead of fries and then eliminate the roll. At table service restaurants, just ask that they replace the potato or rice with veggies and stay away from the bread. I have never had a problem with this type of substitution.
Occasionally I'll have a vew bites of a dessert.
I follow this way of eating at home was able to get off all meds within 6 months and went from an A1C of 10.3 to 5.4 in that 6 month period.

I too have Type 2, and I eat everywhere anyone else does I am just sensible in my way of eating. I was diagnosed in December and I have a good idea about how many carbs are going into my body now without looking at a label everytime I eat.

I am going to miss the sweets at Disney but my rear end won't.. :rotfl2:

My only real challenge this time will be lugging around a LOT of water because I cannot drink Disney water (it is nasty) and I don't drink tea, or sodas anymore!!!

I would highly recommend speaking with a dietician if he hasn't already - my Endocrinologist's office has one on staff and she has been very helpful over the years. It is may or may not be covered by insurance, I was lucky in that mine did at the time, don't know about the new one now. Another great tool is the menus at allearsnet.com. It helps to see what kinds of things are available at each place - and how they might be part of a good meal plan. Take printouts of the menus to a meeting with the dietician and ask for suggestions.

another warning - is he taking medication???? If yes, be careful about possibly having a low blood sugar reaction at WDW. I know that sounds strange because Type II is about blood sugars being too high. I typically have one or 2 lows a year but had 2 in one week at WDW. The extra exercise and heat hit me hard. Symptoms can include cold sweats, feeling shaky or dizzy or nauseous and "I have to eat NOW". If he is not familiar with a low reaction, I recommend carrying his monitor and testing fairly frequently.
I had to eat more carbs more frequently than I normally do. Share snacks! Go easy on the bread and fries so you can share dessert. If we got 2 CS meals, we'd get one with fries and one with carrots and share them.

good luck!
