DVD players.

I have a friend who won't take a car ride longer than an hour because her daughter doesn't like to ride in the car for longer periods than that, and fusses the whole time.

I keep telling her that the secret to a long car ride, or heck... sometimes even a short one, is a DVD player. It also works as a punishment if the kid isn't good wherever you go. "No DVDs in the car on the way home."

She won't come right out and say that she's against them, but apparently she is. Her dd watches dvds at home sometimes.

She lives two states over from us, and I told her that next year we should get together on the gulf coast. She said she'd have to see because her DD hates being in the car that long. IT'S A YEAR FROM NOW. KIDS CHANGE.

having just driven 11 hours each way to visit my parents, I can attest to the value of DVD players! We have 2 of them, an older one that is fairly big and we can hang it on the back of seat in front of it - this works great for DD7 who gets car sick. And a smaller, newer one that DD9 uses. We also take the smaller one with us to keep the girls entertained if DH and I both have a meeting at church or something.

It seemed silly at first to have 2, but has been really nice to cut down on the arguments of what to watch and when to watch it.

I too think they are wonderful. We had a portable DVD player we used then recently I just bought one that ha 2 separate screens that hang over the headrests of the front seats. Kids still have to watch the same movie but they each have their own screen to view from and can each plug in their headphones. Once these are going- we don't hear a peep from the kids. Great invention in my opinion.

Ipods for sure. If we didnt have our Ipods and had to listen to each other talk the whole way down we would go crazy  . Besides that means other people can sleep while I listen to my music.

I think DVD palyers are a nice idea for long rides, but I think that they can get out of hand. My friends have them on all the time for everyday errands. I don't see why a child needs to be entertained for a 10 minute car ride. Then they wonder why their kids have such short attention spa...Wait, what was I saying?

LOL!

I tend to agree. DDs (7 and 2) are fine for a 3 or 4 hour car ride without it. I don't understand the need to use them on every day errands or even for an hour car ride. Kids need to know how to entertain themselves, even if it is just staring out the window. We go on outings with drive between 30 to 45 minutes nearly every week (zoo, farmers' market, a more exciting mall, etc.)

Now, 10 or 11 or 12 hours? I would probably get one. Luckily, one set of grandparents are 30 minutes away and the other set is 3 hours away. And Orlando is way too far to drive with two little kids!

I love my portable dvd player. They're great for long trips. I also love my husband's video ipod. He downloads a couple of my DD4's favorite movies on it and she's an angel on a plane :rotfl:. She is really good anyways but even I have trouble after a couple hours on a plane - especially when we flew from NY to CA :scared: . They're both great inventions.
