I had to get a new washer, and who doesn't love to buy the least glamorous of major appliances? The glitter and glitz, not to mention the prices make it everyone's favorite pastime. Lucky for me it happened close to the July 4th sales. It was essentially free b/c I used my Discover money to purchase it. What I had not realized was that you can buy Lowes gift cards with your Discover Money at what it 10% off face value. So I dipped in and got 800.00 worth for 720 in cash back. Now do I really believe my washer was free? Absolutely not but, I did not have to lay out any cash AND I got a further discount. Thus making this a very enjoyable experience as compared to a root canal or putting steel needles in my eyes! It killed me to break in to my Discover cushion but I had to tell my self that this is what that cushion is for and there were no places around that I could find a 10% off deal on Lowes cards. Happy Fourth of July!! I never check Discover anymore since I have EBates but it is worthwhile if you shop at place like Sephora or Talbots (who knew!!!), to further a sale prices.

that's a great savings. my only concern with doing it this way through any other credit card would be losing out on the extended warranty coverage but since discover no longer offers that, if you're going to use a discover card for a large purchase at lowes this definitely seems a good way to do it. i wonder if discover has this arrangement with lowes gift cards because they've seen people opt to make larger purchases with other cards since they dropped the benefit last year.

good point have you ever tried to use that warranty ? I did not even realize that this existed so I will check with discover regarding that point.

not with a discover purchase but with both amex and costco/chase visa. with amex they were very easy to deal with and covered the entire cost of multiple service calls. with costco/chase visa they ended up opting to replace the items with brand new ones-and they did it as a return so the new ones would run as a new sale and enact new initial and then extended warranty periods.

Wow did NOT know that how long do they cover for?

Sounds like you got a great deal.

A number of years ago I walked into Best Buy in early Nov and they were blowing out all remaining A/C's at 75% off their last listed price. They has 12000 BTU's last listed at $200 and with the savings they were only $50 each. I grabbed 2 for myself and 2 for my parents. As I unloaded the AC's I noticed the original price was $400. A few days later my electric bill shows up and in side was an insert reminding that they were offering Energy Star rebates. I go to the web site and they were offering $50 per A/C unit in the form of a credit on your electric bill. So in the end I basically got $1600 worth of A/C's for only $10 which was the tax.

Don't you just get the chills (no pun intended) when you get a bargain like that? Seriously even if I was a billionaire I would still go for the bargains. Once I remember that Marshalls had Ray Ban Sunglasses for 29.00 a pair which in itself was a thrill then for some reason they marked them down and still no one wanted them so they were 5.00 a pair. this was like 15 years ago but I bought them all. While I used some I squirreled them away and forgot about them. Lo and behold they were a limited edition and made by Bausch and Lomb who no longer own Ray Ban. My son sold them on e bay for 250 a pair! I had 6 pair. I typically do not hoard things like that but my idea was for 5.00 a pair if they broke or got scratched I would have a replacement well below the cost of one pair. Some times the stars just line up correctly.

I still think I got such a steal that I keep waiting for the police to show up :rotfl2:

One of the A/C's has since died and while it bothered me that it did I still could not complain. Luckily I had the other one and am now using that one.

I had a friend who was sickened when she bought herself a new cell phone and had it knocked out of her hand into a puddle after she had only had it for a few days. YIKES right. The rice trick did not work. A co worker of hers suggested checking on insurance with her credit card company.. Her phone purchase was covered by her credit card purchase. They worked with her to get a new phone at no cost to her.

Yes but instead of considering the bargain a gift or a "steal" I then get annoyed when I have to go back and pay full price for the replacement. But there is always the old well if I pay 800 for this washer and then I have it for 10 years (LOL) and split the cost for each year which is 80 and divide by 52 I am only paying a little over a dollar a week. LOL

Dang. I had my eye on the matching washer to my now about 5 year old dryer, and it finally went on sale. $650 down from $850. I was about to get it when we happened to be in BestBuy last weekend and they had a slightly higher model (but still the 'match') as an open box marked at $525. SOLD! Then when they delivered it, there was a slight scuff on the glass and they offered another 10% off. Ended up with a $900 washer for $475. Plus my 2%+1500 swagbucks back. I love a deal :)
