My dumb questions about booking

I am positive that this is addressed somewhere on this site, but I am still learning how to search and wasn't sure where to look. OK, I know that you can't make online reservations for 2012 yet on the WDW website. I think I have heard that you can't book packages at all yet for 2012 but that you can book room only over the phone. Does this sound right?

Also, if I know what resort I want and my 2012 travel dates, and I do book over the phone room only, can I change that to a package when next year's rates become available?

Generally, the new rates come out in August, right? So everything should be good to go by then?

Thanks in advance for your help! I've been several times but this is our first time planning WAY in advance, so this is new to me.

August is when they open up the booking window for any time after January.

As far as booking room only vs. package...
The deposits due for RO and a package are different. As well as the payoff time frame.

Do your homework and figure out ahead of time which one will work better for you.

On a side note, if you are looking to add the dining plan to your trip, they will have the 2012 brochure out at some point, but it is NOT official and NOT complete until 12/31/2011. If you look at the online brochure of participanting restaurants, on the VERY last page in the middle of the bottom, there is a number like this: 12312010. That stands for December 31, 2010.

Thank you so much for your help! With our trip last month, I didn't do as much research as I would have liked regarding price...we were lucky enough to get a bit of a discount, but since we're planning further ahead this time, I'd like to make sure we can get the best deal possible. This clears up a lot of what I was wondering about!

I believe if you book a room only reservation you will have to cancel and rebook a package when packages are available. They will cancel your reservation and refund the money to your account. Then you will have to rebook and repay for the package. That is what we have had to do in the past. Hope that helps a little. I can't wait till 2012. I will get to go back!
