My DS's (7 almost 8) revelation on characters....

Oh, I am so sad. Today we were talking about WDW (what else of course? ) and he told me this.... "Mom, I'm old enough to know how it works, they are just people in costume pretending to be characters...."

We talked some more and I proclaimed that no matter what I BELIEVE that Mickey Mouse is certainly real, and he (the smarty pants ) starts questioning me on how old he is and what the life expectancy of mice could be and how could he POSSIBLY be real and still alive?!!!!! I told him it was all in the magic at WDW!!!

So, I finally conceded that yes they are people in costume, but not to ruin the magic for his younger sister. We talked about this in a rushed fashion because we were at our front door by now. Should I bring it up and have the "talk" about this, or let it go until it comes up again???

SIGH, how can they grow up so fast? Am I to now have to deal with the fact that he will question Santa as well???


PS, I told DH about this, and he said that poor DS should have gone easier on me!

DS figured out in 2nd grade that there's "no Santa." After trying to convince him, he didn't believe me. Then he said there's no Easter bunny, etc. A couple days ago when I mentioned something about one of the characters, he said basically the same thing your son did. I told him also to not say anything to the kids in class. There's only one other in his class that doesn't believe in Santa...this is 4th grade! But that boy DOES believe in the Easter bunny! LOL! DS gets a real kick out of all the kids still believing. Hmmm...I must have been in about 2nd or 3rd grade when my mother told me.

My son told me about the characters while we were coming out of a restroom at WDW. I'll never forget the look of sympathy I got from a lady who was walking past us. He was only 7.

My DS (8 in Nov) says the same thing - but unfortuanately, he says it to his 3 yo sister! I was so sad the other day because when I was talking to her about Princesses (her favorite subject these days) she answered me that they weren't real. When I asked why she thought that she told me her brother told her.....

My daughter informed me last fall there was no such thing as Santa. She had been told by her 12 year old step-brother. AARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH. I just smiled and said "Ok, that's fine. But Santa doesn't visit anyone who doesn't believe in him. And I choose to believe!" Then she changed her mind. As she told me, "Mom, I know there has to be a Santa. There is no way you could afford all those toys!" I still laugh when I think of her saying that. We both know she knows better. But she knows, that I believe in the "magic" of Santa and Disney. I guess you can say she has learned how to humor me. She'll be 9 this Christmas, and she's making her list already!

You can tell Mr. Smarty Pants that Mickey does indeed have a birthday - November 18, 1928, and that the life expectancy for that specific type of mouse is 217.4 years.

My seven year old son said the same thing.

The costume characters are in costumes, but the jury was still out on some of the face characters..

My daughter even said that , but I think it was just because of her big brother.

That's what brought it up the other day. DS lost a tooth. Can't pull the tooth fairy over on him either. He wanted to know why he can't just give me his tooth and I'll give him money. Ha! I told him that he had to put it under his pillow or he wouldn't get anything. Humoring me also.

DD knew the first time we went. She was 5. She just said matter of factly, "you know, those are people dressed up , don't you?" It hasn't ruined any of the magic for her at all. I've had character meals planned for our trips & have aske Dan Murphy to please send her a postcard or something Email to her saying that featured character was looking forward to seeing her etc. and she usually walks around with the printed copy showing everyone! (She's 8)

I have a client with 3 children who is going for the first time in Nov. Her DD and youngest son were looking at my last visits pics and the DD says to me, "You love Mickey, don't you?" Then she asked, "Is he real or not?" (She's 7yo) Her little brother speaks up and says, "No, their not real, silly. It is just people in fluffy costumes." It was so cute but the sister argued with her little brother. She still wanted to believe.
