My doggie is having surgery today

My 6 1/2 yr old Golden retriever is having surgery today. She had been limping for a few days. I actually wasnt concerned at first, I chalked it up to be a playing injury. Her and my 2 yr old yellow lab play all the time. Run after each other, jump on each other, on and off the sofa on the bed etc... I noticed it wasnt getting better. I took her to the vet and he said it was an ACL torn ligament something or another.. He said a lot, hard to hear anything with my 3 kids in there. Anyways, I dont want my baby to suffer. I first asked if it could wait a month because we are going on a cruise mid August. He said it could wait, but she will only get worse and worse and be in more discomfort. I couldnt do that. So it is scheduled for today. She has to have limit activity for 2-3 months, which will be tough. A friend was going to watch both my dogs for my upcoming trip. Now,I have to split them up, so she can get the rest she needs without any distractions.
Im hoping for a smooth day today.. I love my fur babies so much.
The cost of the surgery will set us back,expecially with a cruise coming up. But, I wont let her suffer in any way.

Our dog tore her ACL in May. She is a small dog and they don't usually repair torn ACL's in small dogs. She is still limping around on her leg, some days are better then others. It hasn't slowed her down much though.

My dog had a problem with his ACL I am still not sure that it was torn but they gave him medication the of which eludes me now but it helped him. On the next trip to the vet he found a tumor. They removed the tumor about a year ago. Surgery went well and he had a few restrictions such as take it easy for a few weeks. I thought it might be the reason for the ACL problem but it was not. It was only day surgery and he came home that night. We took turns sitting with him (he was whimpering for a couple of days) but then he was fine. YOur dog should do very well with the surgery but I am guessing will want someone with him round the clock when he gets home. Surgery is traumatic since we cannot even explain to them what happened.


Every once and a while he will limp around. He is a big dog and was 109 lbs (shep/lab). He cut down on treats and table scraps to help him lose a little weight and put less stress on his back leg.

Good luck your dog will be fine and keep in mind labs, goldens and sheps are prone to ACL problems. I do not know if you do this but my kids used to make my dog jump for treats(EVEN though we told them NOT to do it) and this put a good deal of stress on the ACL.

We all love our furbabies so much and will do what we can for them even though sometimes it sets us back financially. DH and I once joked around about a cat we had that cost us a couple of thousand $$$ in vet bills. We called her our million dollar cat - she was such a money pit but she brought us great joy in between her vet care.

By the way, my dog, Pepper, a stray that found us, is having surgery today too. We're getting her spayed. I'm sure she'll be fine.

My Mom's Golden Retreiver "Holly" had the same thing happen to her last winter. She was limping for a while and they finally took her to the vet and they had to do surgery b/c of a torn ligament. She spent the night at the vets and I guess the ligament was torn really bad, they had to use some kind of fishing wire to hold it together or something like that.

It was tough to keep her from not moving around since my mom's house has a lot of stairs and Holly used to love to jump on the couch so they had to keep her from doing all that. It was sad to see her like that. It took awhile for her to heal and at first we were getting worried b/c she still wouldn't use that one back paw when she would walk when it was healing but eventually she did. She is perfect now and back to normal.

I had to have a jumbo-sized Carmex lid removed from my Golden, two days before a cruise. It set me back $1,000. Ouch!

Thank you so much for doing the right thing, even if it does hurt financially! Your baby will love you all the more for it!

Our new addition is going to the vet this evening. Not sure what to expect. My son adopted him while staying at his Aunt's Farm. Cousin ran over him with a 4 wheeler about two weeks ago. I finally got them back home Sunday. first thing I see is this little Pom can't put weight on his leg. The vet is going to fit him in this evening when I get off work. I hope it's not to serious.

The vets office called today at 1pm, said everything went well, and my doggie was doing fine. I feel so bad for her. I cried when I left her there this morning. I will pick her up tomorrow morning. I wish I could have her tonight. I know its best she stay quiet and calm there over night. I know she is in pain,and it breaks my heart. The vet tech said she will be given lots of good drugs, and she should be sleeping a lot. It just makes me sad she will be in a cage all night, and not home with her family

Your furbaby is better off staying there tonight. Sometimes it's so hard to keep them still. I remember Chloe jumping on the bed after her spay. It was impossible to keep her calm.

It's probably harder on you, than it is on her. (Remind me of that, the next time I'm on here crying about leaving my dog.)
