My dog killed a rabbit

My sweet Penny killed a wild rabbit too! It was a couple summers ago and she got loose. I didn't see it, but my neighbor did and he was MAD! They feed the rabbits in their backyard so they are always around. I was upset for awhile too because at the time my DS was little and I thought if she could kill a rabbit how would she be with my DS?!? Needless to say she hasn't gotten away to do it again (knocking on wood) and I've forgiven her. It is disappointing and a bit scarey though...

BTW - she is great my my kids. DS likes to pounce on her when she is sleeping and even though he startles the life out of her she has never nipped or bitten him...

The glowing eyeballs make her look freakier than she really is...

Penny definitely looks part sighthound (greyhound, whippet, etc.) so chasing rabbits is totally natural. She sure is a cutie!

Our chocolate lab killed a rabbit in our yard a couple years ago. I heard the poor little thing scream, never knew rabbits could make a sound like that, it was awful!

It wasn't a wild rabbit either, it was the neighbor's pet. They have all sorts of animals running around their yard. We see dead chickens in the road quite often in front of their house. I felt bad for the rabbit, but not for the neighbors, they should have kept the bunny contained if they cared about it.

Just lookit this way, a rabbit is nothing more then a large rat with longer ears and a fuzzy butt!!!

My lab/shepherd mix used to kill squirrels all the time. She would wait at the bottom of a pecan tree. The younger, dumber squirrels would run down the trunk and then back up, taunting her. But she knew exactly where she could nail 'em. And sure enought the little boogers would push their luck and.........CHOMP! Another hole behind the shed.

My PB (the beta dog) killed a squirrel last fall. Then our boxer (the alpha dog) got in a fight with him because SHE wanted it. DH had to break them up with a rake and then dispose of the victim. THAT was a fun day!

We used to have a German shepherd who was huge, even by German shepherd standards (he weighed 140 pounds and his back came nearly up to my hip, and I'm 5'9"), but he was the gentlest, sweetest dog. After we'd had him for a few years, he started wandering a bit, usually staying gone for a few hours before returning. Unfortunately, after a couple of these "day trips," we got a call from the rangers at a nearby wildlife refuge who informed us that Thunder had been coming into the park and killing adult deer. They told us that if it happened again, they'd shoot him.

Thankfully, we had a friend who was a retired K-9 officer who lived a few hundred miles away and agreed to adopt Thunder.

We live out in the country and one of my dogs loves to hunt. She kills rabbits, squirrels, two racoons I know of and a big groundhog that lived around for a couple of years (quess she got tired of him.) However, she loves people and she's a really sweet dog. But she's a dog and she's doing what dogs do.

We have a 10 year old Miniature Schnauzer named Buddy.

Buddy is an inside dog, but we have a big metal run between 2 poles in the back yard so Buddy and run back and forth.

Buddy does not like rabbits. We used to have wild rabbits in our yard. They weren't stupid rabbits. They knew how far Buddy's leash would reach and would sit there chewing grass just inches Buddy. Buddy would bark. The rabbits would sit there in a group ignoring him.

Well, DH decided to replace the leash that hooks on the run. This leash was about 4 inches longer than the old one. Buddy took off into the yard. The rabbits were in their usual location. Buddy got one. He drug it up dead onto our deck. He was so excited to show Mom his kill. Of course, I flipped out. I brought Buddy inside. Buddy didn't understand why. The dead rabbit stayed on our deck for a few hours until DH came home and disposed of it. Buddy spent those few hours trying to get me to let him go outside to be with this dead rabbit. Buddy was quite proud of himself.

My son made a sign and hung it on the fridge. It said... Buddy is a rabbit killer.

Buddy has never killed anything since, thank goodness. There are only 2 rabbits in our yard this year. They live under the porch with a chipmunk.

My three maltese dogs worked together (I think, I wasn't there) to kill (and eat-yuck!) a squirel this week. My sweet little 5 lb, 9 lb and 12lb prissy, prima donna pooches are now strutting around the house like ferrocious warriors!

I have a very amusing image in my head on this one.... Do they wear little, itty bitty suits of armor?

Really, you can't fault a dog for being a dog. It's unfortunate, but nature can be brutal and that's the way it goes.

If this was a wild rabbit, I might have my dog checked because you don't know what that rabbit might have been carrying. Other than that, let it go.

My Petey has other problems. He catches things: birds from mid-air, moles, rabbits, mice, wild kittens, frogs, etc, Holds them and GROOMS them, then lets them go unharmed. He is a great hunter, he can catch just about anything he goes after, but he must lack a killer instinct (which is FINE by me.)

Shame on your neighbors for letting their animals run wild! I am so careful to keep a good fence/barrier between my animals and the neighbors' dogs. I've had several of their dogs sit on the other side of my fence and bark at my chickens, the odd thing is, it's never the dogs from my immediate neighbor's yard it's always some dog from up the street. It seems like the dogs right next door get used to the birds pretty quickly and just ignore them, my lab only likes the chickens because she likes to steal their eggs I do have a very strict policy with my birds though, if your dog gets into my yard and kills one of my animals I enforce the SSS policy - Shoot, Shovel, and Shut UP!
