Anyone ever had to deal with this?

We took her to the vet emergency two nights ago because she couldn't stand, her eyes were shifting, and she was throwing up. We thought we were losing her (she is 14 yrs old) but they said she has canine vertigo.

She has a precription for an ear drops (although they don't know if that is what is the cause) , one for pain and one for nausea.

She is no longer throwing up and she can eat and drink small amounts. However she still can not stand or walk.

I'm wondering how long this will last.

I'd bet money on it esp. since the OP's dog is older. This is very common in older pets.

My dog was about 15 when he experienced it. It only lasted about 24 hours for him and I kept in a dark room so the room would not be spinning around. That seemed to really help.

My cat had it earlier this year. I actually had to take her in and the gave her an IV because she weighed less than 3 lbs! She's back up to 6 now! And seems fine, although old.

Hope your dog feels better quickly!!!!!

Ugh. :headache: Your poor doggy. My Minky hasn't had it, but *I've* had vertigo and it felt pretty terrible. At least, as a human I could understand what was happening, even though it was barely tolerable. Imagine not being able to understand and feeling sooooo badly. Hugs to your pup:hug:

Thanks for your replies. I was just concerned that she wasn't much better after two days but it sounds like it can take much longer.

I hate seeing her like this.

I don't know about vertigo in dogs, but I had it for 6 weeks.

our dalmatian had this problem and it was so bad that she was going lopsided walking ...took her to the ER and they sedated her and looked in and she had ruptured her ear drum from it......she had antibotic shot and then meds and ear drops that were so hard to put in..she hates it....
took a few days to get her back to normal

If this happens again ..put your doggie in her kennel with towels or blankets on the sides...makes them feel less like they are falling...the vet recommended that we do this....worked

We had a cat once that got this after having his teeth and ears cleaned. He couldn't climb and could really have hurt himself. We had to get a cage for him for a few weeks and let him out only when we were home and could watch him. Took quite awhile for him to get back to normal.

Tony, my BIL is a vet and he told me I was fortunate it lasted such a short time with Bucky that it could last a week+.

I hope with each day it gets better and better. Took my cat about a week.

my sis's 1yo mastiff had this recently. He was so bad my sis thought he was not going to get better. The vet prescribed ear drops, nausea meds and an anti-biotic as they thought it started with an inner ear infection. The poor thing was vomiting, dizzy, and so sick. It took a good two weeks for him to start really wanting to eat. He lost a bunch of weight which on a young big dog is not good. We really didn't believe the vet at first that it was all that was wrong. He seemed so sick it couldn't just be an ear thing.

What is happening with her eyes now? And did you mean they were permanently shifting, or moving back and forth?
