Anyone ever experience these side effects with their dog? I thought I would ask my Dis friends if they had and if there is a more natural way to keep fleas and ticks away? I won't use these chemicals again.

After it happened I googled it and sure enough lots of people talking about the same symptoms. She could not walk right nor wag her tail. She was listless and could not focus-she looked kind of crossed eyed.

Any info would be helpful

Not me personally, but my neighbor's dog started having seizures after medicating. She rescued a shelty. She has two collies also. She did research and one of these meds is better for those breeds. He ended up having seizures because of the medication. I can't remember which med it is though.

As for my dogs, they go out to do their business and come right back in. Sometimes the chihuahua likes to lay in the sun on the deck. I don't use those things. I get them tested each year for heart worm. I think it ends up being about the same money, but I'm not putting that in their systems. I do get flack from the vet about it, but explained my position and she understands. She mentions it every time though.

I haven't done it, but my mom used to spray Avon's skin so soft on our dogs. They spent a lot of time outdoors though.

I would ask your Vet. I would think there should be an alternative. Just like people, everyone doesn't react to medications the same way.

I live in the thick of the woods where ticks and fleas are rampant. We use Front Line Plus. I have read some dogs have a problem with that too.

Hope your dog is OK and you find a safe alternative. :)

We have a big problem each year with fleas because the neighbors behind us don't take care of their hunting dogs. he takes them out in the woods hunting and then brings them back home and doesnt wash them or anything. We used Frontline I think and it didn't get rid of the fleas. We use Dawn dish washing detergent. It kills the fleas and doesn't irritate the dogs skin. My chi had a bad skin allergy and it never bothered him like some shampoos did. Dawn doesn't prevent fleas, but will kill what is on the dog. My new little chi hasn't had any yet. Her tummy is covered with "freckles" so I'm curious to see if the freckles will start moving! LOL :rotfl2:

My dog has had reactions to just about everything out there. I finally said "enough" and stopped using them. (One time she even got fleas while on the preventative and the vet said the fleas are becoming immune to the chemicals. It was then I really started to wonder what the point was.)

Anyway, I decided to tackle the problem from other angles.

1. We treat the yard where she does her business regularly.

2. I got a flea comb and I use it once a week to check for fleas and remove any (haven't found any yet, though)

3. Vacuum the house regularly (and I put a little piece of a cut up flea collar in the bag to kill anything I might suck up)

4. Bathe the dog more frequently in the summer.

ETA #5. I wash her bedding twice a week in summer, once a week the rest of the year.

ETA. #6. I put cedar shavings in with the fluff of her bed. It doesn't kill fleas, but cedar does repel them.

That's it and no fleas. Like the other poster I get a lot of flak from the vet, but I just decided those chemicals were too much for my dog and I wanted a different approach. YMMV.

We have tons of ticks here in NY. A few years ago, my dd had an imbedded female deer tick in her neck, brought in the house by my dogs.

We use advantix (we were using frontline, but we were finding too many ticks still). Advantix is a little stronger. So far, so good for my dogs.

I can't take the extra risk of someone in my family getting a tick from the dogs. At least w/ the meds on the dogs, if the tick comes in the house on the dog, they've bitten the dog, get the poison, fall off and die. If the dog has no meds, the ticks come in, don't die and could bite my family.

and yes, we can all get ticks from other places too (besides my dogs bringing them into the house).

I can't use frontline on my Aussi. She has really weird reactions from it. So far she's been fine with the Advantix, but I really don't put it on them all that often, maybe once a year.

I think there is a lot more to it. Is this the first time you put advantix? Where did you buy the product? Either way you should take your dog to the vet and have him give you the best advice. There is confortis is a pill that prevents fleas. I know is a small percentage of dogs that have problems with topical treatments, but the reaction can be for different reason so a visit to the vet is a must.

I would also contact Bayer, the manufacturer of Advantix. They have vets on staff and want to know this information so they can prevent it from happening again.
Their contact information should be on the box.

I don't have a flea issue but I do have a tick problem.

I don't like using the chemicals either however now my poor girl has ehrlichiosis from a tick, she is currently on a Doxcycline regime.:guilty:

I have the Frontline Plus that I plan to put on my dogs this weekend.

Supposedly, the transmission of tick diseases is after 24hrs on the animal and the poison is supposed to kill them off before then.

I didn't mention that we also treat the yard with something dh gets from an agri supply type place. Don't know exactly what it is.

I'm so sorry your dd has that! fyi - we used to use frontline, but we were still having live ticks in the house. The vet recommended Advantix - it's a little stronger for the ticks.

Interesting. My dog has it not my dd in case you made that assumption. I guess I should have been more clear in my post.;)

Yes, we were having the LIVE FAT dog ticks drop off. Gross and EWWW...:headache:

We got down to business and picked, scrubbed and clipped them. We found the area on one of those dogs. It was his hindquarters where they were hanging out. Bleech....So now we are in brushing heck.

On a good note my 2 dogs coats are sleek, shiny and they look well groomed.:lmao:

LOL - yes, I totally made that assumption. I thought maybe it was a lyme-like disease I just hadn't heard of yet. :rotfl:

ok, so i'm sorry your doggie has it. :)

These treatments tend to affect smaller dogs the most. My Pomeranian is 6 pounds and every time I had given her the treatments, she gets very hot to the touch, lethargic, won't eat or drink, doesn't seem to want to move at all. I've tried different brands and the vet told me to cease giving her the topical treatments since it seems to affect her nervous system. I use an organic spray I got from Petco. It contains citronella and other natural substances that fleas and ticks hate. She also has limited exposure to the outside and we brush her coat everyday and check her for critters.

I will never give any animal I have those treatments ever again. When the warning label strictly says to never get the solution on your skin and can kill cats, there's a reason dogs are reacting adversely. The FDA is even investigating because of all the complaints of illness and death.

I've been using Comfortis for over a year now and it has been very effective. It's expensive but worth it!

Well people can get this disease, ehrlichiosis, just like Lyme and Rocky Spotted Mountain Fever from a tick bite.

So yes, if you are bitten, make sure you check the symptoms of this disease as well as Lyme's.

Symptoms

The time between the tick bite and when symptoms occur is about 7 - 9 days. This is called the incubation period.
Symptoms may seem like the flu (influenza), and may include:

Other possible symptoms:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fine pinhead-sized areas of bleeding in the skin (petechial rash)
  • Flat red rash (maculopapular rash)
  • General ill feeling (malaise)
A rash appears in fewer than half of cases. Sometimes, the disease may be mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The symptoms are often quite general, but patients are sometimes sick enough to see a doctor.
