He is just lying around the kitchen and I am hearing this crunching sound. The first time I heard it, back in August, I thought he got into something he shouldn't have. On closer inspection, the truth became apparent! He bites his toe nails!! :scared1:

My cocker spaniel does this when his need clipped, and sometimes for no reason at all. (ironically, that is what me, my DH and son just did- YES, it takes 3 people to clip a 35 lbs dogs nails, he is such a baby) I would take him to a groomer to handle it, but he is a very emotionally sensitive dog and also 13, doesn't handle trauma very well.

I rescued him from a shelter years ago and assumed it was due to neglect and anxiety, but who knows...

Jude has no excuse! He gets groomed every 6 weeks. He gets his hair done more often than I do! :rotfl: And he loves every minute of it.

LOL! Too funny. My DH and I clip our girls toenails ourselves. My Boston Terrier Oreo will run around and eat the clippings before I get a chance to clean it up. Its just gross, and when I tell her to stop she acts like I am trying to take a steak away from her or something. I dont know, furry babiess are just weird I guess. lol

Our polydactl cat does this, too. At least, she does on 26 of her claws, the 27th grows at at a weird angle and we have to take care of that one for her. DH is joking about wanting to ask the vet to declaw just that one..it tends to get ingrown on her, poor fuzzball.

One of my cats that has since passed away used to have two toenails that would curl around and become ingrown. It was odd, it looked like it just grew back into where it grew out of:eek: I would always have to clip it out for her.

One of the cats that we have now will chew her nails.

my basenji's have always done this...but then, they're weird.:rotfl:

Our Himilayan had that happen once with her dew claws. I had her down one day brushing her and noticed it was "growing back in" (LOL, that's what I shrieked at the vet on the phone). She had me bring her in and calmly took a pair of human fingernail clippers and clipped it off, leaving me looking like a complete idiot! :lmao:

OT, when I was a child we had a pair of Basenjis, a brother and sister (hence the name boy and girl, nothing else would stick ). Our dogs were absolutely whacko. Do yours climb fences and pick open gates? Ours would repeatedly climb the chain link fence and go around the corner to our old neighbor's house to visit with their Boxer. Same thing with picking open the weird, convoluted gate latch, not your typical horseshoe type, this one was a combination. Nutty dogs. I especially remember the childlike whimper that they made instead of barking.:upsidedow

I have watched mine try to climb trees. And yes, they would climb the fence if they could (we have a 6' privacy fence).

I swear one of the ones I have now is ADHD. I even asked the vet if it were possible. She said yes:rolleyes:

I believe it, I remember my dad taking an aluminum boat (small, about 12 foot, no motor) and turning it upside down and propping one end on the dog house, the other on the ground. Those two numbskulls would climb up it and slide down on their rumps, like little kids :rotfl: . They also climbed my sliding board and slid down it (old steel kind, not plastic). They would sleep piled together in a wicker cat bed we had (looked like a cave, pillow inside the wicker hooded basket. I wish my kids coul,d have seen those two. HArd headed, too. THe only dog I have ever had that came close in the stubborn gene is our current demon, Scruffy.

My dog bites her toe nails too. Can't stop her. She even does it when we have clipped them. She also will eat the clippings from her "brother" too. Who knows why they like them

My dog does this every night as part of his before bed grooming.

One of my cats chews her nails and then spits them out! It's the funniest thing to watch and hear.

It beats paying to have them clipped (like I do). I wish I had a nail biting dog. Maybe my lab likes her nails long, I don't know....

Here's some guesses-
free snack
helps keep her/his teeth sharp
some thing to do
doesn't like any one else touching his/her nails
nail biting fetish?

Sorry, just some wild and crazy guesses. (heavy on the crazy) :crazy2:

Mine too......every night. He also sucks on part of his chain that hangs down from around his neck. We used to put his license and rabies shot tag on his collar, but he would walk around with them in his mouth like a pacifier :confused3
