My Disney love is making me a bad Canadian :(

What drives me nuts is that the cost to fly anywhere in this country is so ridiculous. It cost us about the same to fly to Hawaii this year as it did to fly to Kelowna, BC the year before. And to visit my family in Alberta...I could have flown round trip to Dublin for the same cost.

It can be nutty at times for sure. For me to fly from Edmonton to Kelowna, it's about $400 CAD on Westjet. I can get Edmonton to Orlando on United for $492 CAD!

ETA: In Canada a good chunk of a fare is airport fees/taxes, especially YYZ. Flying directly to a US airport avoids much of this hassle.

We are Albertans. We've vacationed in British Columbia and we've vacationed in Florida. For me personally, Florida wins hands down because I love the hot humid weather. For my family, they prefer the more temperate zone of home. Since I'm the one who plans the vacations, I pick where we vacation and where I'm going to be happiest. :P

We always joke in our family "it is not a real vacation unless we change our money (to another currency) and get on a plane." :) Of course we love to travel Canada too, but going to another country - even the US, always seems to be more of an adventure. In Canada we are 'home'.

It's like read a story book or history book.

Disney it's fantasy, magic. I am a huge fan of museum but it's fun to take some days in your life to forget who you are and be a 8 years old again.

So true. I get excited just crossing the border to go to Buffalo for an hour. :rotfl:

Go where everyone would get a vacation. My DH likes renting a house in FL for our WDW trips, but I don't. I like the space, but I end up cooking, cleaning up and doing laundry - I can do that at home. I don't want to do it on vacation. I want someone to do my cooking for me, and I want someone to clean my room while I'm out. I would pick Disney - but we always pick Disney. If my son wants to explore the world... that's what Epcot is for!

I vote for Disney. I will always vote for Disney.

Your comment about cooking and cleaning reminds me of my first trip to WDW in the early '70s. We stayed in a scuzzy little motel in Clearwater Beach that had a kitchenette so mom could cook some of our meals. The first thing we did upon arrival was go out to a grocery store to buy cleaning products because the kitchen was so gross. So that was the beginning of mom's vacation. On later vacations my father continued to insist that they find rooms with a kitchen to save money on meals -- but did he EVER lift a finger to contribute? You can guess. Eventually my mom asked, "When do I get a vacation?"

So yeah, go to Disney. :)

If I see a kitchen, it's not a vacation. OP, why does it have to be a cottage? The East Coast of Canada has many fine hotels; some even with room service. The Maritimes are beautiful, but you don't have to rough it to see them.

While I think it's important/worth it to see Canada you want a vacation to be a vacation. Especially if you haven't had a proper one in awhile. And it sucks just how freaking expensive travel across Canada can be compared to a flight to Orlando (or California I suppose).

We are the same. Went to Disney & Florida 9 years ago for our first "and once of a lifetime" trip with our 4 & 6 year old girls! We have been every year in March since and the last 2 years we have done Xmas and March. Then last summer we drove to Williamsburg, Va ( we have SeaWorld Parks, Platinum Passes) so thought it is only 12 hours to drive. We went to a ball game in Baltimore on our way there. Did Busch Gardens, & Water Country USA. Our passes don't expire until Nov of this year, (2 year passes) We went to Florida, Dec & March and leave in 22 days for Virginia Beach. My girls are taking surf Lessons at the beach, will go back to BG & Water Country, and stopping in Hershey for a night to do Hershey Park. I have people say all the time, why don't you go somewhere in Canada. My answer is, I don't know, but we enjoying our vacations in the US. And I got my whole week in a 2 bdrm condo for $500 US. I can't find that here.

we were thinking of doing Virginia beach this summer but pushed it back to next summer. Where did you find the condo rental for such a great price?
