Well, here's how it turned out.
As I said before, I was lucky enough to be there for the QFG party. I'm home now, and have had a chance to download my pictures to the computer. Here are a few of them to share.
The contest started outside the gates of DL. They had a tent setup for the 1700 finalists (and all of their friends and family) to check in throughout the day. Everybody got a scratch ticket that revealed if they were a finalist or not. Only 50 of the 1700 were finalists (unfortunately, I wasn't one of them)
From the beginning of the night, there was a pirate flair to the entire party, even the Matterhorn was dressed to suit.
The Columbia came out into a bank of fog carrying the lucky 50 finalists. All 50 got t-shirts.
Our Pirate hosts for the evening kept things moving right along through the whole ceremony.
The 50 finalists each got a medallion with a symbol in a bag when they boarded the Columbia. There were 5 different symbols (10 of each type). A large version of the one with a ship's wheel was unveiled, and the 10 with the symbol moved on - the other 40 sat down.
The 10 contestants left each got a large gem, and a framed Pirates of he Caribbean lithograph. The gems were added to the treasure pile on board, one at a time. A dead pirate's voice boomed out announcing if the gem had been part of his treasure hoard or not. The 3 who had the gems that were a part of the hoard stayed in the hunt. The other 7 sat back down.
The final 3 each got 2 deluxe annual passes. To move on, they each got a mug of drink (we met one of the 3 people later, and she told us it was unsweetened tea). When they finished, a number was revealed in the bottom of the mugs (I, II, or III).
The final hurdle to determine the winner was for the 3 remaining contestants to unveil their sails, according to the number in the mugs.
The lady with the Golden Sail was the winner.
"Lucky" Debbie didn't seem to believe she had won the Golden Pirate Hat - or the $50,000.
