My desktop won't play VMK, any thoughts as to why?

We have two computers here at home, a laptop & the desktop. When I signed up for VMK I tried playing on the desktop first but Internet Explorer will crash within a minute of playing. So my daughter & I have been playing on my husband's laptop but we wish we could figure out why the desktop will not work.

These are the specs of my desktop-
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, 2.2ghz
1G RAM
160G hard drive with 85G available
Nvidia Geforce 7600GS video card
Operating system- Windows XP home edition
Browser- Internet Explorer 7

When we try to play VMK on the desktop we can log in fine but within a minute of being on I'll get a message that says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close." As prompted I send in the error log which states it is something due to Flash and I need to update to the newest version. Problem is I have the latest version. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Flash & Shockwave about three times and the crash happens the same way every time. I'm stumped as to what the cause is. Is there anything I can do to rectify the problem or is this desktop just not going to play VMK?

We're going to get another desktop in about 6 weeks or so but since this one will then become our daughter's computer I thought I would ask. I think my husband is especially keen on getting the problem worked out because he's feeling a bit as though we're "hogging" his laptop. ;) Thanks for any input you can give me.

Updated to add: I just tried Firefox to see if a different browser would correct the issue. No luck. The error was almost the same, "Firefox has encountered a problem and must close" with the prompt that I need to update Flash/Shockwave. My husband keeps asking why and I have no answers to give him. I have no clue why this is happening. :confused3

Virus scan, spyware & adware scans all came up clean. Check disk found nothing to be repaired. I went ahead and defragged the hard drive too. Uninstalled & reinstalled IE but not Firefox since I tend to prefer IE for now. Followed the instructions in the linked thread to remove Flash & Shockware and reinstall in the recommended order. I was able to be on for nearly two minutes this time before it crashed the same as always. The dreaded "Windows Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close" error. :sad1:

I think I might have to stick with the laptop for VMK until the new machine arrives. Then I think I will back up everything on the desktop (digital pictures mainly) and reformat the hard drive before I give it to my daughters to use.

When the crash happens, do you send a report? Usually after sending a report, Microsoft (if there is a solution) will link you to a solution posted on their site.

Have you tried that?

Also, if you click details, it will tell you the file that might be causing the problem. If you could tell me what the file is, I can try to help as best as I can.

Vmk wont let me in also. I think its bc there is a lot of ppl. Just wait a while and then come back to it. :)

I've been making sure to send the error report each time. Prior to today Microsoft would link me to updating Flash, eventhough the Flash & Shockwave test would say that I had the latest version.

After following your's & Malificent's instructions today I've logged on successfully and then crash in VMK within two minutes of logging on. It's the white "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close" error. I send the error report as prompted but so far Microsoft is not linking me to any sort of solution. I've written down the exception information from the error details-

Exception information:
code: 0xc0000005 flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x000000000a09dbe

Is that the information that you need? If you need something else I'll be able to make the error happen again and look for the specific file you need.

Thank you so much for helping me. I really appreciate it. :)

Try logging in again, and when you get the error message again, click on the link that says "To see what data this error report contains, click here"...

There should be an AppName, AppVer, and ModVer

AppName should tell you the exact file that is causing the problem.

Thanks Cosmic, this is what it says for Appname-

Appname: iexplore.exe

Hmm, does that mean that something is still broken with my Internet Explorer? Do I need to try Firefox again or Netscape?

I'm sorry to keep leaving out important information, but there's also a ModName that I need... It's usually a .dll file

You can try it with Firefox and Netscape to see if you receive the same ModName error, but it'll probably come up the same as IE. Uninstalling and reinstalling flash/shockwave should have solved the problem by now!

Which spyware software did you use to clean out your computer?
Spyspot Search and Destroy is excellent.

Have you also cleared your cache?

I wrote all of it down so no worries.

Modname:iml32.dll

I also have the Appver, Modver & Offset if you need them. I've been using Spybot Search & Destroy for about 6 months now at the recommendation of a friend.

By cleaning out my cache do you mean my Temporary Internet files, Cookies & history? I did clean out all of those but if there's something else I need to clean out could you direct me to the correct spot?

Let me do more research on this. You shouldn't have to reformat your hard drive to solve a problem... (corrupt .dll files are a pain). I'll PM you with any information I find.

For now, I would try Grumpy_Disney_Dad's solution to see if that works... (4th time a charm? maybe?!)

Sure thing. Again thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it. I'll try Grumpy Disney Dad's link a try (probably tomorrow or Saturday) and keep my fingers crossed.
