We have a cat who is very attached to my mom who lives in our family room. We had a second cat who died a couple of years ago. If my 17- year old daughter gets a kitten, she would like it to stay in the house but the other cat goes outside. I also told her that the kitten may want to be close to my mom's cat so they both may end up staying downstairs with my mom - my daughter would like the kitten to be 'hers'. Do you think the kitten would accept staying in the house while the cat gets to go out? Is there a chance that both cats will not get along?

Any suggestions?

Also, is there any behavior differences between a male and a female cat??

We have two cats...Simba and Nala. Simba is a male, and Nala is a female. Initially, they fought like cats & dogs (sorry ;) ). Now, they are best friends. Nala is an "outside cat", while Simba is content to just lay on mom & dad's bed and purr. Simba rarely, if ever, tries to run out with Nala.

I wouldn't worry too much about what's going to happen when you get your kitten. There will probably be lots of hissing, running, spitting, etc., but soon each cat will eventually accept each other and do their own thing.

Thank you.

When I asked the animal shelter worker what the difference between males and females were, she said that after a male is 'fixed', he is not going to know he was ever a male or something like that.

We have always had female cats and one dog who was also a female. Should we stick with another female?

Jodi,
I have a lot of cats, and have owned both male and female. I find the male cats to be much more affectionate, and found my female to be much more independent. (Although that may have been cause she was a Siamese!)

if you do decide to make the kitten an indoor cat, I would be careful because he'll probably try to sneak out with the other one. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs and the cats are always trying to get out. The older cat is the oldest of the bunch and is not always happy when someone new comes along - but he learns to accept it. Our kitten just joined us last month and is already a big part of the family (but boy what a trouble maker). We actually have male cats - someone told me they had better personalities. I don't know if that's true or not but they are both wonderful, cuddly cats.
