My daughter has sock issues - help!

I have a daughter who is 6. She's had the same Old Navy socks for the past 2-3 years and has virtually worn them to death. They are the kind that have a little spandex in them so they don't slouch, and the seams around toes are nice and smooth.

So a few months ago, I went to Old Navy to buy some new socks and they don't sell that kind anymore. They're cut totally different. I bought a pair, and DD proceeded to have a MAJOR meltdown and saying they don't feel right.

She's always been particular about how things fit her, sometimes to the point where it feels like somethings not quite right with her! :confused3

I've been on the hunt for some new socks. I've gone everywhere. ShopKo, Bergner's, Children's Place, you name it.

Last week, I got SO excited because I found some white socks at Bergner's and they seemed PERFECT. The seams around the toes were smooth, which is what she needs. So I got them for her, she tried them on and loved them. She loved them until they got washed and now they don't feel the same.

Back to square one.

It's gotten to the point where she even wears the Old Navy socks MISMATCHED, which drives me up the wall.

This morning, it took her almost 10 minutes to get on socks and she nearly missed her bus. I keep teling her that she has to be strong, because this is all in her mind and she's letting this get the best of her.

Should I just take the Old Navy socks AWAY all together?

My other question is where else I should look for socks. Aren't Gap and Old Navy one and the same? Just wondering how Gap Kids socks would be.

I am at a TOTAL LOSS! Help!

My DD is the same way!! She would literally have mini melt downs over her socks not fitting right!! She is better now but still spends about 3 or 4 minutes on each foot getting the sock to 'feel right'.

LOL I'm sorry but this is hysterical, I was totally a "sock-problem-kid." :rotfl2: :lmao:

I'm sure I drove my mom crazy! I really wasn't doing it to be annoying or for attention, they REALLY bothered me! I would buy a bunch of different kinds, make a sock drawer or sock basket, and give your daughter 5 minutes in the morning just for "sock time." After 5 minutes, she has to come out with some sort of socks on. :rotfl: I know that I always freaked out when I was being rushed, so maybe if you let her do her thing, it will calm down. Good luck!

My DD(7) is the same way. She gets "the look" when something isn't right:guilty: -then i get my look:headache: .

Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic are all the same-I think.

If it helps I just got some Kerrigan(DD) approved socks at Target before school started. They are labeled "Gold Toe" and the seem is on top, so she doesn't feel them under her toes. I don't know it a Kerrigan thing:confused3 .

Good Luck!

We have sock and other issues to this day with our oldest daughter. If something doesn't fit or look just right to her you can't even hold her down anymore and squeeze her into it. I have lost count of how many brands of socks I have boughten for her that have been handed down to her sister because they just werent the right kind.

On two different edges of the price section, nordstroms and target have huge sock selections of all types. I would try those two places. Nordstrom has a great return policy even if the tags are off in my experience.

If I were you I would look into the book, the Out of Sync Child. To me, it sounds like your child may have some Sensory Dysfunction Issues. Have you tried eBay?

Maybe your local uniform shop can help. We used to get DD's socks there, and they were smoother and stayed up. Of course they were synthetic material, so her feet stunk if she got hot :rolleyes1

They seem to have more thin type socks, maybe some would help.

I wouldn't be too worried - many kids go through stages like that. My son wouldn't wear jeans until two years ago - after school he'd get out of his uniform and HAD to have soft clothes - sweats and tees only! Then all of a sudden, he didn't mind jeans and stuff.

Good luck!

Try turning the socks inside out - then the seam is on the outside. Also check to see if your daughter's shoes are too small. Buy them a tiny bit bigger than you normally would, so the sock seams are not pushed into her foot.

If her foot is large enough, try women's trouser socks - they are thinner and tend to have a less bulky toe seam. I buy mine at JC Penney, Macy's and Walmart, although the Walmart ones can have a thicker seam - it's hard to tell until you get them home and try them on.

Yes, I had a picky-sock child, and she still won't wear jeans, and she's a senior in high school...

I thought I was the only one with the Sock Child! I would have to open all the packs of socks to look at how the seam was sewn to determine whether or not she would wear them! And I love the stores that stock the socks that ziploc because I would never rip open a bag otherwise and we would have to buy try and return all the time!

I was just going to post that my dd wears her socks inside out as well- always has and probably always will.

I have to bring my dd with me and let her pick her own socks unless its a tried and true brand.

That's what I was going to say - sounds like a sensory issue. My little guy doesn't lose it over socks, but will take them off as soon as he can. What he cannot tolerate is to have sleeves pushed up - like if he's wearing long sleeves, and we push them up to wash his hands - he cannot wait to get the hand washing over so he can pull them back down.

When I was a kid I was a BEAST!!!! I had to have these particular pair of socks. White ones that went to the ankle with those little ruffles on them? Which soon became impossible to find after 1988 :lmao: And pants? Forget it! I must of drove my mother up a wall. I refused to wear jeans because they were 'itchy' and would only wear cotton stretch pants. I also hated dresses. But one day when I was around 11 I decided that I liked jeans and the socks didn't matter. Kids grow out of those things and it doesn't always mean something is the matter with them. I used to go with my mom to pick out pants and socks so maybe you could try that? I would give the OK to buy them so the only person to get mad at was myself because I picked them out. Good luck

ohoooo. I thought I was the only one:confused3 I feel your pain!

I just wanted to say that, while there are kids who do have sensory issues, I don't know that the OPs DD fits into that category.

I lady I knew had a little boy with sensory issues, and he would have a VERY strong reaction to certain things. He would scream like he was in physical pain if she tried t put certain fabrics on him, he had to go into a "quiet place"(a small tent in his room) after school to help him decompress. He had other issues with certain noises as well. His reaction was very severe if he got overwhelmed.

I think that most of the kids the PPs (including my own) are just going through one of the many strange phases kids go through. We don't always know what is going on in the little heads, but we make due until it passes;). I think the OPs DD is just going through one of these phases.

Ds8 was the same way in 1st and 2nd grade, TG he grew out of it this year!

Stride Rite has very thin, tight, seamless socks. That was all he would wear and now ds4 seems to be on the same kick. Our local mom and pop kids' shoe store carries socks similar to Stride Rite, so you might want to check at shoe shops.

Good luck. I feel your pain!

my dd is another one with sock issues. She hates the seem at the toes.. luckly she will wear most socks but it takes for forever to put them on right!

Thank you ALL for your responses! I am so relieved that I am not the only one who feel this way and now that this is a very common issue.

I will definitely check out Gap Kids sometime and see what kind of socks they have!!! I really hope they have the ones like what Old Navy used to carry.....those have been her fav.

Again, thank you so much. I am feeling much, much better. :)

DD5 has sock issues (and actually is a kid with sensory issues). She would only wear the Baby Gap socks, but she eventually grew out of them. After trying Chidlren's Place, Old Navy, Land's End, Target, Hanes etc., we settled on Gap Kids socks. They have a scalloped edge (which I like but she had to get used to), but they have the same stretch and the same kind of writing on the bottom (Gap instead of Baby Gap). It was very important for DD that the socks had the non-skid letters on the bottom. :confused3 But she is happy now, and they should fit her for a while - she is wearing a medium now, so there is room to grow!

Good luck, OP! We are right there with you!

My dd had sock issues when she was a little girl. Every morning, freaking out because her "socks didn't feel right". She eventually grew out of it, but it was definately a problem when she was young. It didn't matter what kind or brand of socks we bought for her, NONE of them ever fit right, according to her.

I didn't read each and every last reply but I don't recall anyone mentioning the brand Gold Toe socks. I've gotten them for my oldest daughter and I haven't had any complaints, but I really don't recall her complaining how her other socks that I might have gotten her felt either. I personally like Gold Toe brand socks because they are good quality and last long. The seams are smooth and the sock it self is comfortable. I've seen them everywhere from Target to Macy's; they are a little more expensive then other brands such as Hanes or Fruit of the Loom but I think since you only have to buy a few packs each year they save you money in the long run.
