We are leaving in 39 days for Disney World and a Disney Cruise and my 9 year old daughter broke her ankle last week. We are only going to be at Disney World for 2 days before our cruise and I am wondering if it is even worth going. It is a lot of money and we are only there for such a short time. I am thinking about canceling. What would you do?

oh no! I am sorry about your daughter! I would rent her a wheelchair and push her around... breaking her ankle is bad enough, she shouldnt have to miss the trip too :)

We were there with my friend's DD in a boot with a broken ankle and it barely slowed her down. We were having to tell her to slow down. She walked and ran more than she rode. Her doctor said she would be fine walking as much as she wanted in the boot. She did all the rides without issues. It would be the cruise I would worry about as I would question whether she will be able to swim. I would ask where her doctor thinks she would be in 39 days. That is almost 6 weeks and it could be close to healed by then. I think 6 weeks is typical, but sometimes it can be 8. Another friend's son broke his leg this summer and he was actually out of his cast and cleared for sports at 4 1/2 weeks. The healing time will depend on the type of break most likely. So sorry this happened to her and I hope she heals quickly!

I wouldn't skip the parks, it's just a broken ankle. Is she even going to be in the cast in 39 days? I came out of my cast in 30 days after I broke my ankle younger. Just have some budget on the side for the wheelchair or ecv if needed. If out of the cast, it's going to be a little rough at first and not back to normal yet.

Ok, thanks. I feel better now. I think as long as she is healing well we will go!

Thank you!

You have to be 18 to rent an ECV so you might keep that in mind.

We arrive in 32 days for our week long trip and my son broke his arm this past week. :( I am crossing my fingers that he will get his cast off in 4 weeks, right before we leave, but I just don't know at this point. I am most concerned about him having to miss out on swimming. I'm sorry your daughter broke her leg, we feel your pain. lol. Speedy recovery for both of them!

Has the dr said how long she will be in a cast? DD fractured her arm once and we thought she'd be in a cast for our trip. Luckily, she got the cast off a couple of days before our trip and just had to wear a splint/brace type thing to keep her from overdoing it.

Good luck!

Does she have a waterproof cast?

She is in a boot right now and actually today has started walking on it! I am feeling very hopeful. We go back September 8th to see how she is healing. Hopefully she will be back to normal or at least close to it by the time we go. Tod&CopperFan I am sorry about your sons arm!

I would definitely not cancel anything. I'm sure it will go much smoother than you think. Sounds like a great trip, have fun!

You have my deepest sympathy! DD rolled her ankle at taekwondo last week, and was put in a splint. Her pediatrician saw her yesterday and she was still very tender so they are sending us to the orthopedic on Monday. Likely a cast for 3-6 weeks. Our trip is in 49 days, so she may be in it until the week before. We wouldn't dream of canceling! If we have to go slower than normal, so be it! Lol! I hope she heals quickly and you all have a fabulous time!

Smitch425 I am sorry about your daughters ankle! Sydney rolled her ankle in gymnastics. I thought it was just a sprain so we iced and wrapped it. She was still having a lot of pain so I took her in. She actually has an avulsion fracture which is where the ligament on the inside of her ankle attaches to the bone broke off. The ortho said that in kids the ligament is stronger that the bone and had she been older the ligament would have torn instead. Crazy. I hope your daughter fells better! Also get her in a boot instead of a cast if possible. Much easier!

At medical supply stores, you can purchase an inflatable bag that goes over the cast for swimming.
I assume it's not meant for deep sea diving or anything, but might be good for water rides and the Casey Jr Splash area. Would probably work for her to float in a tube at the hotel pool.

Awe : / As others have stated, I would definitely still plan on the park days. There a quite a few people that use wheelchairs in the parks should she still need assistance once your trip nears, even if it's only for sitting part of the time. We used an ECV for my mother on one trip and did not encounter any problems making our way through the crowds to various attractions. I hope she heals quickly and you all have a wonderful vacation!

My dad broke her ankle 3 years ago this week. She had a waterproof cast, thank goodness! She was out of it with in a month and started soccer slowly but it was the getting used to walking on it again with out the cast support.

Ds18 broke his arms 3x when he was younger. The last time was in 2nd grade a few weeks before a planned cruise+ WDW visit. He has always been able to get a waterproof cast. It didn't slow him down at all. He swam in the ship's pool, snorkeled with the sting rays in Grand Cayman and then while in WDW the characters signed his cast. I would think an ankle would affect the trip more but I wouldn't settle for any cast that isn't waterproof.
Good luck OP. Hope you can still have a nice trip!

Thank you! DD was put in a boot yesterday afternoon and went to school this morning crutch free. Hallelujah! Just got word this morning that she will able to do a walk through for her TKD belt test this weekend, and break her boards with 3 hand techniques (instead of 1 hand/two kicks), which will keep her on track with her brother. She had already gone to school before I got the news, so she's going to be ecstatic when she gets home. She'll miss some training, but should be able to catch up in time for the next test.

My son went to the orthopedist yesterday and got his hard cast. She released him to play soccer as scheduled this fall, and the best news is he gets his cast off two days before we leave for Disney!! Best news I could hope for! Yay for our kiddos with broken bones!

Hello.

1st, I am praying for a speedy recovery. Kids definatley heal faster and better than adults.

2nd, you will have an amazing trip. You will be forced to slow down but that is not a bad thing. Maybe it gives you a chance to see and do things you would normally not do... Look around in shops, watch shows, etc. My only advice is remind her not to over do it. I broke my ankle when I was a teen and the pain sneaks up on you. It is easy to walk too much while you are pain free and then have it hit you.

I actually have stitches in my arm right now and the same thing applies. I end up doing to much and then the pain hits. It is hard to remember to just take it easy even when you are not in pain.

Have a great trip!
