I've known since like february, but ALS is a very serious nervous disease and continues to get worse. It started as my dad just had slurred speech and sounded drunk, but now he can't eat at all.

Some of you may know ALS as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

He's actually been living with it for like three years now. Not only can he not eat, he can't talk either.

The problem with the disease is that it's very unpredictable, so we dont know what's going to happen.

Don't cry. Please. I actually didn't cry when i found out. I had known there was something going on but i wasnt sure what.

I will try not to.I just get really emotional with certin things.

 I'm so sorry.
If you need someone to talk to, I'm here.

I havent told any of my real life friends about this yet, mostly because im scared they'll treat me differently. But, since I dont know any of you DISers in real life, I figured I should tell y'all.

Also, this disease is listed as a "rare disease" meaning that less than 5 in 10,000 people are affected by it.

I'm sure they would understand.

Wow.
less then 5 in 10,000.
Wow!!!
I feel so bad for your father.

I realize that they would probably understand, but I probably wont tell them unless they have the nerve to ask "what's wrong with your dad"?

Rare disease, shmare disease. I know firsthand, just because it's "rare" doesn't mean it won't happen. Still, it's hard to find someone to relate to when the disease is rare, which makes it so much more tough.

As for your first paragraph, this is what I've found out. The people you thought would stick around and comfort you, won't. The people you never thought would comfort you, will. Some of your friends will be sad for you and help you through this tough time, others will drift away, they don't know how to react.

That's not nerve. Staring is nerve.
When someone saw I was sick and asked what was wrong, I didn't care. I could tell them I had cancer.
Someone who was staring wouldn't know I had cancer and would just look at me as a freak.

im sorry,
and my dad was in the hospital this summer.
he had a blood infection in his foot, and the virus traveld all the way up his leg. and the first night i saw him in the hospital, i didnt cry. i laughed...
my mom said it was a "nervous reaction"

but i just didnt know what to do so i laughed.

but regardless to that, i hope your family is doing okay. and my prayers go out to your father and your family.

God bless,
rachel
