So, I was having a REALLY great day. I got a lot of cleaning done. I mopped my kitchen floor. I got dinner cooking around 10:30 this morning. I placed some delicious looking pork chops in my crockpot with some cream of chicken soup and turned it on low, dinner would be around 6pm.

A friend of mine stopped by and just as I sat down to talk to her I heard something shatter in my kitchen. I got up and headed into the kitchen and there was the lid to my crocpot completely shattered and hanging into the pork chops. My dinner that I was so looking forward to now needs to be thrown out. There are little pieces of glass all over it. :headache: Now I'm cranky! And hungry!:scared:

Has that ever happened to anyone else?

How scary! Never heard of that happening.

On the other hand, sounds like a good night for going OUT!

I have heard of pyrex "exploding" before, though I can't remember what caused it. Wonder if it might be the same general idea. :confused3 That's a really freaky picture though, but I agree with PP, sounds like a good night to eat out. ;)

I would send that picture to the company. That's insane. Can you imagine if you were standing next to it?

Sorry it's such a big picture! I resized it with photobucket so not sure what the problem is.

Your crockpot wouldn't happen to be a Rival brand would it? If so, read this consumer complaint from a couple months ago:

Gloria of West Greenwich RI (02/06/08)
It was Super Bowl Sunday. We had about 25 people at my house. My 18 month old grandson was toddling around the kitchen and one of my guests had just helped herself to the food in my crockpot when suddenly the lid on it exploded for no reason, spewing shards of glass into the food and all over my kitchen countertop, floor, and dog dishes. Luckily no one was hurt, but the food I made was ruined and everyone who has witnessed this will never buy another Rival Crockpot. I went online to see if there was some kind of recall due to the lid explosion. I did find a Rival Crockpot recall but it was for the handles the fall off, not for exploding lids. Apparently these are not serious enough to warrant a recall? All they do is offer another lid of the same kind. Someone could have been blinded or seriously injured by this. I think there should be a recall of all Rival Crockpots.

I have heard of that happening. When I was researching brands to buy one, I saw several reviews where peoples lids had shattered. I seem to remember it had something to do with venting and that the lids also shook a lot during cooking. That pic is something though. :scared: I definitely send it to Rival.

Oh crap, mine is a Rival too and I was planning to use it tomorrow. I set it up in the am before work and then we're gone all day. Now I'm kinda freaked. Is the lid glass or plexiglass or what?

I use a liner in mine so I don't think the seal between crock and lid is ever so tight that it could blow. At least that's what I'm telling myself, lol.

EEEKKK!!! I just finished eating my pork chop supper from our CrockPot. Mine is stainless steel, and the glass lid has a stainless steel rim around it. I use the CrockPot at least once a week... sure hope it doesn't happen to me.
:scared1:

oh great...I have TWO Rival Crockpots (small size & large). Now I'm worried.

I like the linners, mine does't "rattle" as much when I use it.

Mine also has the stainless steel rim around the lid. Mine is hamilton beach.

how scary!!

I have a Rival, too. I use it often for hte last few years and it hasn't caused me a problem but that sure makes me nervous!

If it DOES explode, when we're not home, is it a fire risk or anything? Or just a mess to clean up when I get home?

We have dogs, too, so I worry about it sending glass where they are.

Well, I'm certainly in the market for a new Crockpot. I just don't know which kind to get! They all seem to have glass lids, I know a few people that have them with a plastic lid. I can't seem to find those. Guess I'll keep on looking!!

We ended up picking up Chinese since our dinner was ruined. :woohoo: I LOVE Chinese food!

I am now scared to use my crock pot!!! I will make sure to push it way back on the counter since dd plays in the kitchen while I am in there. I have a Rival and I always thought it ran hot. When it is on low, it boils the food and I always thought that was strange, now I see others with Rival's also run really hot.

Does anyone know of a good brand that dosen't run hot or explode?
