System Restore will ONLY recover you if you can restore to a point BEFORE you were infected by a virus or spyware-it will NOT recover you from a corrupting operating system. It is of course a first option.
True.
I come form a family of electricians and electronic engineers. They always say start from the simplist solution and rule them out, before moving to the more complicated. Like, if a lamp doesn't turn on, change the lightbulb. Also check to see it's plugged in. Then check the wall switch. Look over the cord. Test the socket & wiring. Check the wall outlet. All these should be done before you go into the internal wiring of the wall.Reformatting the hard drive, reloading Win XP, or doing a clean install is the equivalent of going into the wall. For you IT people, it's simple & routine, because you guys are more organized,
you can do this in your sleep. You have all the disks, drivers, program files, updates nicely organized, etc. For us simple folk, it is a pain in the butt.

The OP might just have a mouse problem or driver problem. Or spyware doing funky things to her PC. Hopefully, it is that simple.
