Just a warning to everyone...lock up your valuables including any and all prescription meds when staying in any hotel. We learned this the hard way last week. We have absolutely no proof of what happened, but our daughter's prescription meds disappeared from our unit at OKW.

I'm sure that things like this can happen at any resort at any time, so don't be naive like me. Lock up your meds in the safe or keep them on your person. From now on we will no matter where we are staying. We feel "safe" at Disney and the thought of this happening never occured to me.

ETA - I was talking to my mom about this and both of us think that it is possible that crimes of opportunity are more likely at big, spread out resorts with outdoor hallways. I'm not going to get a false sense of security about staying at resorts with indoor hallways, but maybe they have cameras that make crimes of opportunity less likely?

Did you report it? They can do a run of everyone's band/ID that entered the room.

I assume this was a controlled drug, maybe a stimulant. There are people that will ask to use your restroom and then go through the area for such meds.

People seem to think that crimes don't happen at Disney, wrong, crimes happen every day. Disney employees are people off of the streets just like any business, most good, a few bad. Vacation destinations are targets for all criminals.

Disney does a great job of keeping negative reports quiet.

We always lock everything up and use caution. We have had credit cards skimmed twice at Disney and the cards were only used at Disney at BCV and BWV.

Yes, it was an ADHD med., so a controlled substance. We reported it but since we have no proof and no idea when it happened, good luck figuring out who took it. When we were there we also saw someone cuffed and arrested by the OCSO. This was right by the main building. He was wearing a bathing suit, dressed like a tourist. I have no idea why he was being arrested, but that combined with the missing meds. makes me feel like I might stick to resorts with indoor hallways (and presumably cameras in the hallways) from now on.

Nobody asked to use our restroom or anything like that. Maybe someone came in behind the maid?

But that wouldn't show someone who entered without permission, snuck in behind the maid, etc. The door didn't latch unless pulled shut tightly. I wonder if somehow we left the door unlatched inadvertently. There were a couple of times that my kids were the last ones out. Maybe there are a lot of units with doors like that or the criminals know which ones are like that...who knows. All I know is that I will lock up all meds and all valuables from now on and I'd advise everyone else to do the same.

Maybe it was the maid or other Disney employee, or it could have been someone else but how did they get in?

Our door didn't latch very well unless you pulled it really hard. Maybe one of the times we didn't pull it hard enough. Maybe rooms like that are known to criminals who are familiar with that resort...who knows. I'd say there is a zero percent chance we'll ever figure out what happened, but a 100% chance that I'm not taking chances with meds or valuables in hotel rooms in the future.

Good advice, hard lesson learned. :(

You should always report anything to Disney. I know people feel like Disney does nothing in this situation but they do.

If you know your daughter took her medicine one night then the next day went to take it and it was gone that is a time frame you can give Disney. They can then search to see who accessed your room during that time. A note is made in those CM files to say that a report of stolen goods was made and then if nothing comes up that report just sits there. Now if someone realizes that a certain CM tends to have a lot of these theft reports they will launch an investigation.

I only know about this because they used this method to catch a house keeper who was taking money out of safes even. After enough marks Disney called in the cops who set up several hidden items and money that was marked. Once the stuff was taken they tracked it back to the CM and she was taken off property in hand cuffs.

Edited to remove the statement that some found bad even after firther clarification.

Remember housekeeping is typically the low of the low on the totem pole of CMs.

Holy cow. How does that happen? Even the safes aren't safe? OK, I'll just keep the valuables on my person then. Scary.

Oh, yeah...prescriptions are a big draw to steal. My sister is a real estate agent, and people steal drugs from open houses and walk throughs all the time.

I'm not surprised at all that they were stolen, not at all. And ADHD drugs are especially tempting, they are a big deal nowadays. You should always lock up your prescriptions when at a hotel or resort.

I have stayed in rooms at AKV Kidani where the safe door wouldn't latch. It would appear to be locked, and if you pulled gently, it seemed closed. But if you gave a good tug, it would come open. Reported the problem after we left, because I didn't particularly want to draw attention to the fact the safe didn't work while we were staying in the room, or to have to wait in the room for somebody to come fix it. So, the safes aren't particularly safe, either.
We've only stayed at OKW once, and the unit we were in didn't even have a safe. It must be new that they have safes.

I can't remember if we were at AK or BW at the time, but my wife had recently had back surgery and had pain meds. She swears some were missing from the bottle but didn't feel confident enough to report. It was only us two staying in the room.

Not sure why you are furious. With my statement. I meant in terms of what is required to get that position. It is one of the easiest in the company to get thus why if you say you are willing to do housekeeping you are much more likely to get on the college program than someone who says they would never do housekeeping. Most days you can walk into casting and get a job at housekeeping as long as your fingerprint scan passes. It is that or custodial.

It had nothing to do with the people who work the job necessarily.

I remember reading (about the safes) the family left the key in the room and the housekeeper found it and helped herself. I would say use the safe and take the key with you.

We left our jewelry at home before going to Disney. I brought a cheap watch only.

As far as meds.... dont bring the pill bottles put the meds in travel cases. That way no one knows what med they are. I kept mine in a travel pill case in my shower bag.

Wow. I would not leave the safe key behind as that defeats the purpose. The pill travel case is a good idea, but I'll still be locking it up or keeping it on me.

I honestly don't know if our room at OKW even had a safe. Clearly it didn't even occur to me to look for one, nevermind to use it:worried: Our room door is the thing that didn't latch without being pulled really hard. That is interesting that the safe didn't latch in your room. I think it was probably random, but who knows...scary.

OMG on people stealing drugs from open houses and walk-throughs. Who would even think of that? I sure wouldn't...well, I guess I would now, but before I wouldn't. That's horrible.
