I tried to use my Visa debit to buy some pizza tonight but it was declined. I wound up using another credit card, and when I went home and checked online my bank has no record of my checking account! :scared1: Over $500 has gone *poof*! It still shows my savings account but it is like my checking account never existed - I have called Visa fraud but they told me I have to talk to my credit union since they can't see the details about my account. Has this ever happened to anyone else? :scared1: I'm not getting much sleep tonight...:headache:

Is there anyway it was garinshed for owing anyone money

It doesn't show that my balance is $0 - it just doen't show a record of my account at all. I do have some things I have gotten behind on since I was laid off last fall but I have already checked those accounts and none of them are showing an extra $500 payment. It's like my checking account was completely ereased. :confused3

that would not have deleted the account number and name etc....

get all your records in order so you can prove the loss amount. hopefully it will just pop back, and soon!

I worked in banking for a few years. Was this a new account? I can think of a couple of instances where we had to close accounts without telling the customer ahead of time. Of course we had made multiple attempts to phone the customer and by law we still had to send a certified letter to notify them of our action. There were special circumstances in each case, though.

Not exactly the same situation, but I got hit with an emptied-out bank account yesterday. My auto-payment on my Chase Disney visa was declined NSF. They called to tell me and the poor man must have recoiled at how loud my "WHAT?!" was -- there was supposed to be $7K in that account, and I'd just checked it less than a week ago.

I immediately RAN to the bank to move some money into the account and find out WTH had happened, and I found out that I was nearly $2K overdrawn. What did it was a HUGE charge by of all places, Chase Visa, but the charge was not to cover anything on my account. In two days I had already racked up nearly $300 in overdraft and NSF fees because somehow the backup savings account overdraft transfer failed to kick in the way that it should. (I did get those fees refunded.)

After a lot of mental trauma and several hours of phone calls to very unsympathetic bank and CC reps, I discovered that the culprit was DH! He had charged some construction work on our home on the joint credit account [that is primarily his; I never manage those bills] in order to pick up some airline points. Unfortunately, on the drop-down menu of bank account numbers to be used to pay the bill, he accidentally chose my personal account instead of the household account. I hadn't known that he had charged the construction work, and I almost sicced the fraud squad on the charge, because I couldn't figure out what it was.

Needless to say, I'm not really happy with DH just now. :headache:

DH did have a bank teller error do it to him about a year ago. Someone came in with a cashier's check for $10K, and the bank teller transposed a digit on the account number when he cashed it. Wiped out the entire account, but they corrected the error quickly.

It better be a major computer glitch... I'd be freaking out too.

I hope you have some records of your last deposits into the account. To show there was money in it to begin with.

I closed an account with my bank, but it's still under my log-in with a 0 balance. I can't do anything with it, but it shows that it exsisted at one point in time. And my other two accounts show as well.

No, I have had this account for several years & I have not gotten any phone calls or certified mail about closing my checking account.

This is exactly why I refuse the Debit card with the Credit Card attached. I have a PIN accessible only Debit card because of a scary experience of my own 10 years ago.

I had a suspicious charge years ago and discovered the way debit cards handle discrepancies is not the same way the credit card companies handle them. When a suspicious charge occurs with a straight Credit Card, the charge is suspended until the problem is ironed out. In contrast, when a suspicious charge happens with a Debit/Credit card, the charge remains against your account until you can prove it was either an error or fraud. it turned out my charge was valid (just a different name showed up which spooked me) but the ordeal left an impression. Since a Credit/Debit card gives access directly to your money I realized this could be a dangerous set-up and that they banks did a poor job of explaining the risks to cardholders.

Good luck and please post the outcome, I'm interested to see how this sort of thing is handled these days.

This is NOT true for all banks. Perhaps your card was not a VISA. I dropped (probably) my VISA check card at a gas station last spring. By the time I knew it was missing, the person who picked it up had bought a tank of gas and a meal at McDonald's. I called the bank. They stopped the card, began a fraud investigation, etc. The person told me the money would be put back in my account while it was being investigated. I had my account online open, and the money was back in my account BEFORE I finished the phone call. Another time, I disputed a duplicate charge, and again the $ was in my account during the investigation.

when the money/charge was taken in the first quote was the pin number used in the transaction?

I have had my debit/credit hit twice. Each time we had no problem with getting our money refunded immediately.

First time, I know it was someone from a Panera Bread. They hit up a store which took out a a few hundred in a swipe. And the kicker was I was in MO and this happened in Florida.

Second time, DH gets a call asking if he is trying to purchase a tractor. Um nope. They had already taken some money but not alot. I know it was someone working at a PacSun that swiped my number.

No pins were used and no cards either. They just swipe the numbers. As long as they have the number on the back of the card, you can make it valid.

I work for a bank answering the phones. I remember this one customer was calling cause his accts just disappear off his online banking I belive they were credit cards tho. They would not pull up an any of our systems except one. not sure how it happen but they got unlinked and a code ws deleted off there profile in that one system that links it to all other systems and online banking. I had to put in a form to have them linked back up and I think i was told to tell him 5-7 business and they would be back up. I dont know the turn out as i forgot about it til this thread but i hope it worked out for him.

Certified mail can get lost or stolen. I mailed something on May 19th that is MIA and it was sent certified with the tracking number. Because of what was in it, I'm now very concerned about identity theft. Additionally, my debit card the bank sent to me was also lost/stolen out of the mail last month. I never received it. :headache:

And oh yeah, my credit card number was stolen and used in January of this year but the fraud department caught it and called me before it even appeared on my account online. :thumbsup2 I got a new card number but then had to change all my auto-pay accounts.

OP - I'm hoping your situation is resolved tomorrow without too much hassle. Let us know how it goes. And here's some pixie dust for good luck! pixiedust:

Good morning! Checking in to see how the problem gets resolved!

Op here - Yep, they closed my account and took my money because of my credit card balance. No flames please- I know I was behind on my cc bill but now I don't have the $$ to pay my phone bill or even buy groceries. :scared1:

Was your bank account through the same bank that issued the credit card? I dont understand how they can take your money if it was a different situation. But they closed you bank account?

Ok, I MAY be able to understand why they would take your money for the balance, but why would they close the checking account too?

Yes, my bank account is with the same credit union that issued my credit card. They said I signed paperwork that stated they would do this kind of thing if I got behind on an account but I would think they would have given me a notice so I can make other arraingements for my direct deposit. My husband and I both get paid next week but there is nowhere for the money to go now.
