We adopted a cat about 2 months ago and I swear she thinks she's a dog. She loves to sniff the kitchen floor and whatever food crumbs that she finds, she eats. I found out that she really loves birthday cake. She ate that and was looking at me for more. Everytime I sweep the floor, she goes to the pile and eats whatever looks edible. She also checks out the garbage can and tries to eat whatever food is on top (she doesn't like carrots and rice). She also loves to eat paper and cardboard. Most cats will try to scratch you if they don't want to be bothered, but this one will try to bite you. She actually bit me the other day. Luckily she didn't break any skin. She is not a lap cat at all. Most times she doesn't even want you to pick her up. Is she normal? Does anyone else have a cat like this? BTW she's just about 8 months old now.

She just sounds like a playful, normal, kitten to me. :teeth:

Kittens will, a lot of times, try to eat anything, but you have to be especially vigilant because human food isn't really the best thing for them.

We have two cats, and both of them are more biters than scratchers when they're annoyed.

Not wanting to be picked up isn't a strange thing with cats. Some of them just don't like it, especially when they're busy playing. And yes, I've had cats bite me (mostly as warnings not to continue pestering them).

The eating weird stuff is odd but not necessarily bad--I had a cat who LOVED bread. I would give her a piece from a sandwich and she gobbled it up like it was caviar or something. The other cat thought she was nuts. He'd come up, see she was eating something "good", look at me like he was all left out. I'd offer him the bread, and he'd think I was fooling him with something else until he sniffed what she was eating. It was the funniest thing, though. But I'd mention it to your vet. It does seem a bit strange and you might want to bring it up. It's probably nothing. Not everything we eat is good for cats, especially things with onions and garlic.

My cat is like that. I caught her eating a goldfish cracker my kids dropped the other day. She also fetches, hates to be alone, always wants attention. She doesn't like to be cuddled though. She will nip at me if I don't pet her enough.

She does hunt like a cat during the night though. Then she proceeds to loudly tell us all about it. We found a ton of her toys under the couch and decided for the sake of a good nights sleep we would keep them to ourselves for a while. Of course, it won't really matter because she will hunt the kid's socks or something else.

Sounds like a normal cat to me. My older cat used to hide all the time. She would only want to be pet when she wanted to be pet. Now she lays on the couch a lot and likes attention. She will bite thought if she doesn't want it. She doesn't break skin, or at least she doesn't intend to. But for a 16 year old cat, she has great reflexes. She is the one I have to watch out for.

All 3 of my cats have been paper chewers. They like to chew on cardboard boxes. And only one of my cats is a lap cat. The others squirm if you try to hold them while sitting down. My oldest cat likes to lick the plate after you have spaghetti. My youngest eats almost anything. He likes oatmeal. And he's been known to chase the blowing leaves in the fall, and then eat some. Yep, sounds like you have a normal cat to me! :teeth:

And my dog is like a cat.
She likes to "sunbathe" and groom her paws.

Maybe your cat and my dog are cousins?

My cat drives me crazy because she's always eating stuff (usually not food) off the floor. I try to keep the floors vacuumed, but she always finds something. DH has a part time lawn care business and tracks grass in the house all the time so she eats it. Another thing that bothers me is she licks the couch. We have a tan microfiber couch and I will get up in the morning and find big, dark, wet circles where she has licked. Don't know what's up with that. Maybe she's missing something in her diet. :confused3

Our cat is part Maine Coon also, and very "dog" like. I never knew it was a trait of the breed. He also bites, never scratches. People often think he's declawed (he's not) because he never puts his claws out. But if he doesn't like something, chomp! He's also definitely not a lap cat, but he always "hangs around" whereever we are (especially where DH is), sleeping nearby on the floor. And he comes running when he hears DH's key in the door, coming home from work. If DH is late, Tigger will sit in front of the door, looking at it patiently until DH gets home. Yes, very dog-like.
