My cat is having kittens....updated photos post #150, p. 10

She is absolutely gorgeous. I am wondering if all those who enjoy flaming feel it is OK for breeders to breed cats and sell the hundreds of dollars? How come it is OK for them to not get fixed? Why do people need purebred cats when there are beautiful cats that are already here like OP's cat.

So I know I said I was done defending myself....but....we give our cats to people who REQUEST them. They are beautiful and friendly. Many people WANT kittens who are born on a farm because they aren't so neurotic. I don't "pawn them off on people." If someone is over visiting and wants to adopt one of our kitties we gladly give them away. But I have no need to go around begging people to take one of our cats.

No shelter will adopt out cats to you if you don't plan on keeping them inside. If I ever said to a shelter or rescue that I would gladly take a cat and give it a home, they would have a fit....people get waaaayyyyy too neurotic about pets being outside. Should I keep our cows in the house too? (Move over Bessie, I need to get to the stove). Have you ever filled out one of those applications to adopt an animal? You practically have to sell your firstborn child and sign in blood.

Geez....and really? My cats are contributing to our "carbon footprint?" Are you kidding me? What about the hundreds of mice and chipmunks and squirrels who carry ticks which carry lymes which my cats kill? That seems like a bit of an overreaction.

At some point all the PETA people and other animal activists are going to regulate the farmers right out of business....and no farms = no food. I love our animals, but they are ANIMALS. Yeah, I'm probably opening myself up for a whole new level of being flamed but now I'm getting annoyed with the personal attacks.

This thread is the "JUST FOR FUN" "Community" board. Not so fun for me today.

What a beautiful kitty!!!!

Try not to take the flames too personally, farms really are a different world. I live in the country (no farm) but do keep 3 outside friendly strays to keep the mice out of my house. They have shelter, shots, regular vet care, etc. though I'm sure some would frown on having them outside. I do fix them, however, because too many babies can get overwhelming!

That is a very interesting point. Maybe I should start selling them and then it would be ok for me to enjoy my babies.

Beautiful kitties! When I was little, we had on average 10-14 cats. We lived in the country, not on a farm, but did not get any of the cats fixed. I loved having little kittens every spring and we always found homes for about half of them and kept the other half. They were outside cats unless they were sick or had kittens, and sometimes when my dad was at work(we would sneak them in, LOL)

Now, I have 4 cats and all of them are spade/neutered. I live in the city and they are inside. Besides, the humane society spays them before you can even bring them home.

Enjoy the babies. I still remember holding those sweet little kittens and their tiny little mews:lovestruc

thanks for the pics of the beautiful kittens.. no flames from me!

OP, I hear ya about the animal shelters demanding that animals be kept only inside. There are many situations, especially with animals in the country, where dogs and cats are fine outside. My dog is outside for 12 hours a day most days. He has a large yard, fresh water and food and a large screen porch for shelter. I have one cat who would love to live outside, but I live in the city and he wouldn't live long. He has to make do with the screen porch and infrequent outings on a leash.;)

To be honest, I was thinking flames while I was reading the OP. But after reading several explanations, I can see why this is an exception where it would be acceptable to choose not to neuter or spay. I get that the OP needs cats to do a job, and these particular types of cats are necessary. So no flames here. My mom grew up on a farm in Iowa, and I remember going there every year to visit my grandparents.. I remember hoping and hoping there were baby kitties, and there usually were.:lovestruc

OP your kittens are so cute. I was wondering, however. Do you selectively neuter so there isn't inbreeding? Or do you allow brothers, mothers, sisters, fathers to mate? Just curious.

How cute are they??!!???? I love baby kitties!!

My sister lives in the country and has quite a few cats...I was staying at her house one night when I woke up to them all sitting in a circle in her dining room around a couple of mice... I swear I heard one of them say how thankful they were for the food they were about to eat... :rotfl2: I went back to bed and covered my head...I felt bad for the mice, but couldn't bring myself to shoo the cats away, because I didn't want the mice to join me in the bed later on...

Haha--that's hilarious! I can always can tell when one of the kitties has found something to chase....all the cats will be in the same place in the yard....in a circle....all sort of low to the ground. They are just waiting for the one who "owns" it to lose it!

Well, it's sort of hard to control who gets together with who....I find that sometimes a male and female will sort of bond and almost be a couple. We had two cats, a black female and an orange male. They were always together. We rarely have any that get hit, but the female was hit and killed. The orange one was sitting at the end of the driveway, crying when I came home that day. A couple of days later the orange one was hit and killed about 10 yards from where the black one had been hit. I swear he was up there looking for her.

But to answer your question, we get enough people dropping off cats that there's not been any real problems with inbreeding. You can tell when they are too inbred because they start to look really unhealthy.

I totally relate to sneaking the cats inside. One time when I was a teenager, my friend was staying over at my house. We snuck the kittens in through the window in my bedroom and hid them in my closet for the whole day.

 I knew that my question was kind of silly, how do you keep cats from mating? I was just wondering if inbreeding was a concern. I don't even know what happens when cats inbreed. I guess I always thought they might look like the banjo player in Deliverance.:lmao:

Enjoy your new babies. Like a PP, I love those little "mews".

This is our one indoor kitty, Mocha Latte. She is from a litter we had last year. She is part Siamese, part Maine Coon and part farm cat. She's a perfect kitty. So she's beautiful, not neurotic and has a great personality.
