My Canon 20D may be dead

I dropped it on Main Street last week when we were in the World and it hasn't worked since. I'm taking it to the camera shop today to see if there's any hope, but just in case it doesn't pull through, I'm looking for recommendations. I see they now have the 60D and the 7D. It sounds like one of those would be my best bet. Any thoughts on the two? Anyone here upgrade from the 20D to either of these? I'm so used to my 20D that I hate the thought of even having another camera, so if I have to replace it, I want the replacement to be as similar to my old camera as possible. Thanks for your help!

you can compare features at

the 7D is the best of the Canon crop models but you may not need or want all the features

I think I'm in love with the 7D. I held it in the store tonight. It may be mine soon! I had looked at dpreview, too, and when I read that the 60D was kind of a glorified Rebel, that steered me to the 7D.

7D for sure. If you have not purchased yet, you might consider the Canon Loyalty program. I have not used it but it can save you some money. I snipped the below from another website for reference if you are interested.

Overview - The Canon Loyalty Program provides the opportunity to trade in an existing Canon product for a refurbished Canon Digital SLR. The program initially required the trade in product to be broken (easy to accomplish), but recently they have relaxed this restriction to simply being out of warranty.

This is a very fluid program. Pricing, availability, requirements, and eligibility have changed almost on a daily basis. The phone number for the CLP is 1 (866) 443-8002. Select option "2".

Sorry for the loss on your camera.

I'm looking to retire my Canon 300D and have been longing for the 7D or 5D MkII. Gotta hit the lottery first though. :-)

You're lucky. I wish my camera would kick the bucket so I could upgrade to a 7D.

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for from the camera. If it is image quality then the T2i is the equal of the 60D *and* the 7D since they all use the same sensor (or an almost identical sensor). If it is "because I want it" (a technique I often use, since it requires no research or justification) then of course the 7D wins! ;)

The 60D, being the newest, has some of it's own nice features: the largest RAW buffer; the best LCD; and more flexibility in setting ISO. This would be my choice.

If you want the more sturdy body then go with the 7D, the 6oD has a plastic body. I am a professional and still haven't found a camera with more pleasing skin tone than the 20D, it has a nice warm look where most tend to want to go more red. If you are on a budget you could always look a refurbs or used. KEH has several you could check into like the 40D or the 50D, I still have a 20D, 30D, 40D and a 5D. If money is no object then get the 5DmkII or if you prefer a crop camera get the 7D. You really can't go wrong with any of the cameras mentioned. The biggest thing with the 7D or 5DMKII aside from video is the superior performance at high ISO's.

Thanks, Bob. I ended up going with the 7D for many of the reasons you mentioned. I liked the sturdier body and sealing of the 7D and I wanted it to use my current lenses and take video. I haven't played with it much yet, but the focus speed had me from the moment I picked the camera up. I'm loving that so far! I think my Dh is going to get me the Magic Lantern Guide for it for Christmas (since I already got my real gift!). I can't wait to play with my new camera some more!

ETA, Bob, I just checked out your Smugmug. You take some GORGEOUS pictures!

Congrats on the new camera.

Your thoughts on the 60D parallel mine. I held one the other day and it just didn't feel right. My 300D is starting to really show its age and an upgrade will eventually be in my future.

I'll probably end up with a 7D before long myself! I have friends with the 7D how couldn't be more pleased. Glad you like my work!
