So my next trip to WDW will be my 9th trip. In all these years I've always said "my next trip I want to stay at a deluxe" but then when I go to book I just dont have the money to stay at one. A big treat for us is staying at a moderate. Well... I just this morning altered my W-4 to have more money taken out for taxes and to have an addition $20 withheld from each paycheck on top of that so I will get a much bigger tax return next year. This tax return will pay for our November 2011 Disney trip!! :cool1:

We are going to stay at the Wilderness Lodge this time! I have now thrown myself into researching every square inch of the Wilderness Lodge!!!

Just wanted to share my brilliant idea with you all! :woohoo:

It's amazing how Disney can encourage all of us to really embrace math!:lmao:
I've made the leap to Deluxe starting this summer with CR. I now look at how much I save with discounts instead of how much I spend.;)

You might look into buying points from a DVC owner. We have been staying at deluxe resorts for years that way. Check out the DVC forum on this board.

You could take that same $$ and put it into a interest earning vehicle...that way the money is working for you instead of an interest free loan to the gov't. I know my husband would cringe if I told him I was considering such a thing!!

Oh, and for the WL research...look at post # 248 here: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2212379&page=17

makes me cringe...

I have found that when we make a savings goal on our own, we end up saving MORE than our goal - because after a few months you see the money building up, AND you realize that whatever it was that you used to be wasting that money on wasn't even needed.

Either way, good luck! I'm certainly not hatin' because of your saving method - I just couldn't do it. Consider this: take $1 every day and put it in a jar - just a dollar. You'll save more, AND you get to see your trip $ grow.

Good luck!

Thanks for all of your input. I just wanted to share my happiness. I do currently have money deposited into an interest earning account but thanks for the idea. The extra money withheld was something we always did but stopped a few years ago. Im happy to be able to start doing it again. I am very aware that it does not earn interest.

Just wanted to share my excitement at possibly being able to afford a deluxe hotel for the first time.

I am a Disney newbie. I have stayed in Value, and mod later this month (quick weekend trip) but my dream is to stay at a deluxe. What one do you find to be the best. I have 2 kids, 13 and 9. I have an AP this year and may never get the chance to go with a room only to pay for.

Why give the Feds your money then try to get it back. Just have the bank take an automatic $20 out of your paycheck or checking account into a savings account. This way you have the money, it earns interest and you don't have to stress about getting it back.

Agreed - I would not use the government as a bank. Right now, the way the government is spending money, what if they change the tax laws next year? Next year, you might not get back the same as you think you are getting.

I keep a "travel" fund. I get two paychecks a month; I combine them to spend for the following month. I take $200.00 a month and put it towards a no penalty CD every three months when it comes up for renewal. I add my tax return when I get it.

Please do not use the government as a bank - I can hear my father saying that right now......

That is exciting. I stayed at the WL last month for the first time and really loved it! I think you will have a great stay there. :thumbsup2

I'm excited for you! And while I do agree with the logic of not giving the government use of your money, if that helps you to save, go for it! I know from experience that any savings account can sometimes be too easily accessed. Whereas with your tax thing, you know you can't get to that money until you get it refunded. So I guess its safe way to save!

Regardless of all of that, you are using your money, not a cc to pay for your upgrade and that is the wisest choice of all!

Have fun with your planning!

The government might not give it back but savings account may only net a nickel or two! I'd probably rethink this better!

That's hard. I've stayed at WL, AKL & Poly deluxe resorts and have loved each one for different reasons. There is no wrong choice here.

AKL is beautiful, and the animals is the obvious draw. We had a savanna room. Nothing like sitting on your balcony with a cup of morning coffee watching the animals.

WL is beautiful, love the boat to MK. Watching Electric Water Parade from beach. Nice pool, 2 hot tubs. Marina, walking trails to Ft. Wilderness.

Poly is amazing. Beautiful grounds, huge rooms, great transportation being on monorail to MK, and walking distance to TTC for Epcot monorail. Watching Wishes on the beach is magic. Nice pool.

Thank you SO much Kaffinito!!! After all the negative replies it's nice to see a positive one! Can't wait for this trip!!

For the others... I have a savings accout that has money direct deposited into it. Thanks. :goodvibes We always did this in the past to boost what we get back a little bit. Im happy to be able to do it again. I wasn't looking for criticism of my saving methods... just wanted to share my joy of possibly being able to afford a deluxe hotel for our next trip.

Wow you have had a ton of experience! I always dreamed of staying at a monorail resort. Poly seems to be the most expensive, is it more lavish than the other deluxes? All the deluxes have balconies right? You can clearly see Wishes from the Poly? WOW!

I'm afraid that anytime the subject of money comes up around here it can get a bit hard nosed!

I was thinking about your thread and remembered how for years dh and I did this with our taxes. We would in those days use that money to buy furniture or appliances. Now we use ING for our travel and have that money go directly in but honestly, the old way was easier and more failproof! And interest rates are so lousy right now, I don't think you'd earn much money if it was in savings. Just my .02

I still say, when it comes to money and saving and spending, as long as you do what you can afford, there is no wrong way. You have a plan and something to look forward to!

I'll also put a plug in for the Poly. What a resort! My brother was there two weeks ago and he called me one morning and I could here the ferryboats in the background. It brought back so many great memories!

We also stayed at Boardwalk and that location was wonderful. I really liked being able to walk to Epcot, esp at night after Illuminations. So that area is nice too.

I'm afraid those are the only two deluxe's I have stayed at but I can recommend either one!
