My boss says I have poor social skills at work

Sorry - I agree with your boss.

If your boss put it in your review then at your job it's important to socialize.

Some jobs, it's not important. But apparently it is at your job. I think you should start chit chatting or find a job you're more comfortable with.

It is important. You can be really good at what you do, but if you cannot constructively communicate with the people to your right and left on a day to day basis it isnt going to work.

I would be less than pleased if you argued with me over your review, a review is constructive critism. Not the end of all but points that are good and points to be worked on. Even a stunning review might have a point to work on for someone.

You said your boss said that your "good at engaging people in work conversation" then what more could he ask for. I've worked in jobs where I was a "public servant" (courthouse/police station) and the community loved me...I am very socialable etc.

BUT I do not believe that work is a place to come and vent about your life, kids, what your doing this weekend. I am not close to any of more co-workers, I do not chit chat with them, I come in do my job and leave. I know a couple of them think I should be more sociable at work but seriously why would I want to talk to them about my life??? I don't think social skills are important just for your co-workers to like you...as long as your doing your job and pleasing customers who cares about co-workers

Good social skills are important.

Everyone works better with co-workers that they like, IMO.

Some refer to it as team chemistry.

If you had a boss you liked and one you did not, which would you be inclined to go the extra mile for?
And I am sure you will say you will do your required job for both, but I am talking above and beyond the call of duty.
