Ok I just saw the promos for this show. It looks like it aired in the UK and is now coming to the USA. I know I could google this, but I got a virus last night by clicking on a result in Google and am afraid to :headache:

Since we have a lot of UK brides here...what is this Gypsy thing and why do they have weddings so over the top? The only things I know of gypsies are from the movie Snatch. What's the general consensus over there about the weddings? Tacky (to say the least)?

Gypsies are travelling people, who journey around the country in caravans (though some now live ion static sites in their caravans). They are a mostly from Europe, I think, and very many are from Ireland. They have centuries old traditions and customs and, yes, have very lavish (urm tacky I would say) celebrations, especially weddings!! I must admit, I think that the reason that I am not the greatest fan of Cinderella's coach is because it reminds me of gypsy weddings!! Near to where I live, we have a huge gypsy horse fair which, I believe, features in the programme. Gypsies do not have the greatest of reputations and many communities are unhappy when they show up in town!!
Watch the programme - it is very entertaining!!!

yeah this pretty much somes it up. If you get chance to watch it you should, their dresses are massive and are very creative. Gypsies aren't generally welcome where ever they go so sometimes when they book weddings they keep their traveller identity secret for fear of being turned away.

It's one of those programmes that you watch with your jaw dropped. It's horrifying, awful, nightmarish and yet... you can't switch it off!!

Yes the dresses, fake tans, hair extensions and Cinderella coaches are unbelievable (like if you put a 4 year old in charge of a wedding) but the truly horrifying things about this programme are the way the little girls dress and dance (under 10s dancing and dressing like pole dancers) and the way the teenage girls have absolutely nothing to look forward to in life past their weddings.

No chance of a decent education or a career or any choice whatsoever.

Very, sad indeed.

Those 'tacky'dresses cost £30,000+ / $50,000+ and more often than not weigh more than the bride. to each their own especially when that kind of money is involved

As already stated Gypsies are travellers who generally live in caravans and travel around europe in search of manual work. there are 2 types of gypsies - Romany gypsies and Irish travellers. They have very traditional values in that men to go work and woman stay at home and raise the children. Woman are generally married as soon as they turn 16, and there is NO sex before marriage, and def no divorce (or very rare. your seen as an outcast if you divorce). Most gypsies are roman catholics. However they have a very colourful reputation, men generally known for thieving, swearing, fighting (bare knuckled fighting is generally the gypsie man's sport), and the woman are known for wearing very, erm, little, and for acting very provacative from a very young age. Education and people outside the gypsy community are view very suspicially.
Due to the fact they live in caravans and move a lot and do only cash-in-hand work (tarmacing pavements, building work etc) they pay no tax which is why a lot of people dont like them. but it means they are very very wealthy people. Christenings, Weddings and Funerals are always very very lavish affairs, and generally the most tacky, over-the-top, cringe-worthy events you will ever see! There is generally a competetion between brides over who can have the biggest dress, the biggest cake, the biggest everything! It is insanely funny program to watch! you either love them or hate them. but My big fat gypsy wedding is a MUST see. I think they are fabulous.
here's a link to show just some of the styles of dresses http://tackyweddings.wordpress.com/2010/09/16/traveller-weddings-rejoice/
ENJOY!

Absolutely must see TV! The dresses are enormous! The girls get scars on their hips because of the weight of them and struggle to walk down the aisle but bigger is definitely better! The younger girls are just as outrageous!! :) Enjoy it!

WOW! :scared1: I just watched a clip from the link Leonix put up, and that pink dress is SCARY! And her tiara is hideous. Thanks for sharing the info ladies, us Americans have no idea what gypsy weddings are. I remember seeing a preview for it the other day on tv. This show totally reminds me of "Sweet 16" on MTV where the girls try to have the biggest, bestest everything for their 16th birthday party and throw spoiled-brat fits if they don't get their way. Everything is over-the-top and outlandish, especially for a 16 year old.

I totally want to watch this show but now I'm scared because they have the Cindy coaches and I want the Cindy coach but if I watch it might change my mind! :lmao:

Wow sounds very entertaining! I have to agree its like a mash up of My Super Sweet 16 and also Toddlers in Tiaras. It is also kind of sad though - these girls look forward to this day their whole lives to then have a lifetime of subservience to their husband to look forward to? Like the "glitz and glamor" of their wedding day really has nothing to do with their lifestyle. :confused3

It's really sad in this day and age. There was an interview with one girl who basically said that an education was wasted on her - she wasn't going to be a doctor or a lawyer. And the look on her face was just tragic. They're taken out of school at about 12 or 13 (which is obviously illegal but they're hard to track as they move around so much avoiding the authorities).

It is compulsive viewing but I did find it really sad how the girls are treated. The whole 'grabbing' thing was what shocked me most I think. And I hate to say it but I was all for having Cinderella's Coach till the show first appeared. It's must-see-tv though, the dresses are unexplainable! I cannot imagine wearing one of those all day!

I'm looking forward to this show... it looks very entertaining.

Now, I have always wondered (this might be a stupid question :lmao:)... are these gypsies like Esmarelda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame? Are they the same little girls that are known to run through the streets and pick-pocket people, especially tourists? :confused3

My Big Fat Royal Gypsy Wedding aired here the day before William & Kate's. The Bride wanted a Bigger wedding than the Royals....just wait till you see that! The cake was insanely huge and the little bridesmaids had mini (but still massive) versions of the brides dress!!!!

Esmerelda is supposed to be a Romany gypsy (ancestry in Romania), the gypsies in the show are Irish decent gypsies.

I think the pick pocketing was more 'of the time' hunch back of notre dame was set, and a stereotype. Modern gypsies make their money through cash in hand odd job/construction/animals. They don't pay tax, so all money earnt is theirs. But equally they don't 'take' from society either (claim benefits, they try avoid schooling, doctors etc etc)

I think the rest of the other UK brides have explained it well!

You guys will love it, it was a huge hit over here and is way over the top, I guess they have other beliefs and live their lives slightly different to most! But each to their own - besides Im from Scotland and we have a show called 'The Scheme' which is really bad so I certainly cant pass judgement ha!

:rotfl:

Well... that's what I want. DF wants the same thing. Someday when we can afford it on his pay alone, I will be a stay at home wife (and hopefully mother). And I won't be useless... we won't have to pay for childcare because I'll be there, he won't have to buy meals or eat out as much when working because I'll be making meals, and we we will have a cleaner house too.

Obviously these girls don't really have many opportunities or choices presented to them... but being submissive to your spouse and trusting that their love and decision making isn't always a bad thing.

one thing i'm curious about... how the heck do those girls move their hips like that? even the youngins!

There is obviously a difference between what is happening in this culture and choosing to be a stay at home wife and mother. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't twist my words.
