My Beautiful Cookies!

I am about to cry. I just had to throw out 5 dozen sugar cookies! I had volunteered to make treats for my two sons' classes for Valentines's Day. I spent the afternoon baking 6 dozen heart-shaped sugar cookies. After dinner, I iced them with pink icing and sugar crystals. If I had followed my usual recipe, I would be in bed watching TV right now--have I mentioned that I'm 8 months pregnant? Well, I decided to be creative and add some vanilla extract to the icing mix. All I can say is, it is a good thing I tasted the cookies before packing them, because instead of vanilla extract, the icing is flavored with Sambucol syrup!

My MIL had given DH a bottle of Sambucol syrup when he complained of cold, MIL being very into alternate medicine. The syrup bottle and my good vanilla extract bottle are exactly the same, except for the Sambucol has pale pink wrapper and the vanilla is in cream wrapper.

So instead of resting in bed and watching the Olympics, here I am telling the DIS community of my woes as I wait for the new batch of cookie doughs to firm up in the fridge. I am sure that sometime in future I will find the whole episode hillarious, but right now, I feel like an idiot.

Well, thanks for listening (or rather reading). I do feel a little better (except my back is killing me). I think I'll go and check on the dough. Good night!

aww im sorry! i bet the next batch will be great!!

ive done something similar ---i was dusting my room before vacation--mom came in and asked why my room smelled weird--apparently i dusted with RAID instead of Pledge---cans looked the same!

Wasn't there a thread over the weekend about "your worst cooking mistake" ?

I didn't read any of it, but I'm sure this would be good there too!

We have a cake store by us that sells frozen cut-out cookies, and at this time of year, they have hearts. Put on the pan, thaw for 5-10 minutes and bake. Too bad you are not in my neck of the woods!

Wow I am sorry but that made me chuckle so thanks ;) Good luck on you rnext batch.

Kae

Oh I feel for you hun! I used to offer to do things like that all the time when DD was young. I got smart, I started to just order cupcakes from the bakery! Give that a try, and get off your feet Mommy to be! :goodvibes

Hey, wait don't throw them away, you might be on to something for all those kids that won't take medicine. "Here honey, have a cookie, you have an awful cough". What kid will say no to that!!!!

Oh, no! I'm sorry about the cookies--yes, please post on the cooking mistake thread.

Your better than me--I'm supposed to bring plain heart shaped cookies to my 6yo's class tomorrow. The kids will decorate them tommorow. I have sugar cookie dough that I bought (not supposed to bring homemade food and I figured that using the dough would be ok). I was going to roll out the dough today and cut them into heart shaped cookies, but today I had a migraine and had to take my Rx meds for it, which made me so sleepy. And in order to make the cookies I first would need to vacuum the kitchen to get the pet hairs up since we have a zoo of animals. Bottom line--I sent my DH out to buy sugar cookies tonight. They are just round, but the other mom who is bringing them also brought round ones so that will be fine. The kids do NOT care. I care, but I'll get over the perfectionism. :rotfl:

Hopefully your cookies will be done soon and you can get off your feet!

"It looks exactly like Skinny n Sweet, except for the little skull and crossbones..."

Sorry, just had to throw a little 9 to 5 in there.

I totally sympathize with the waste of such hard work :grouphug:

I can't tell you how many times my dog has duped me at Christmas when I made cookies.

One year, went out to buy sugar (literally 5 minutes to the corner and back) and couldn't figure out for the life of me what I did with the butter I put out to come to room temp, until I looked at the dog...

The next year, finished five dozen cookies, and set them on the table to cool while dh (then db) and I went to catch a movie. Came back to find the entire batch disappeared. And then I looked at the dog...

The year after that, finished five dozen cookies, cooled them out of doggie reach. Thought I was pretty clever. Then, packed them up pretty with ribbon so I could give them as gifts. Went out to a movie with dh (then db) and came back. Uggh! After going to all the effort of wrapping them beautifully, I had not put them back out of doggie reach... ARGGH! :furious:

Suffice it to say, I have finally learned my lesson, and the dog hasn't outsmarted me in some time :p but I feel your pain.

:grouphug: I am sure the next batch will work out. I have to laugh though... I am sure you will find it funny in a short amount of time. You need to write about this experience in the new baby's book. Your V-Day will never be the same again--with yout new memorable cooking event!! :rotfl2:

So, who did you give the dog to? :lmao:

Thank you for your sympathys, ladies. The new batch looks promising, and you can bet that I will stick with my old recipe for the icing.

It would be a good idea except the cookies tasted awful! :crazy2: That's how I figured out that I put in the wrong ingredient.

i'm so sorry about your cookies!! All that hard work!!
I wimped out and went to the store and bought some cupcakes for DD11 to bring into school tomorrow! Lazy me!!

I always have to taste my baking to make sure I've not done something like that, or leave out a cup of sugar....etc.

This year I did it easy, made 2 batches of krispy treats and one large batch of brownies. I put valentines sprinkles on the krispies and some red and white chocolate swirls on the brownies....simple and you get a lot out of one batch over cutting out individual cookies.

I did some fall cookies one year though and took in icing and let the kids do it, maybe you can do that so you can cut down on icing time tonight? Just take in some popcicle sticks or plastic spoons and plop some icing on their plate with the cookies. They'll have fun spreading it on themselves. Give them each a dab of sprinkles or other candy to decorate (m&ms, candy hearts, sugar sprinkles, oreo cookies crumbled up...etc)

Sorry it happened to you, but good thing you caught it.

He was sentenced to solitary the last time he did that and was let out early for good behavior. :teeth:
