Just got back from a six-night stay 12/29-1/4 at Aulani followed by 2 nights at the Hyatt Waikiki. This was our 3rd trip to Hawaii and definitely the most time we had spent on Oahu. It was a good trip and I have a new appreciation for the island.

We arrived at Aulani on Thursday at 4:30 pm after a long flight from St. Louis. Rental car from Enterprise was a snap and getting to Aulani was just as easy. The check-in process was a little confusing as we were seemingly passed from person to person. The last one handed us our keys and sent us to our room. We were in Ewa, Room 853, a 1 BR Island view (view of Ko Olina mountainside and the parking lot.) I had requested a high floor in the other tower but was too tired too ask for a change.

We were awestruck by the beauty of the resort. The room, however, was a different story. It seemed smaller than other DVC resorts. There was an awful smell when we arrived and we soon discovered overflowing trash under the sink. The bellman remarked how bad it was the trash had not been taken out and quickly emptied it and apologized. There was also buttered fingerprints on the cabinets which we cleaned. Having only one bathroom was a challenge for 4 adults. The appliances ended up being the worst we've ever had in a vacation rental. The dryer took 3-4 cylces to dry. When we called to have it fixed, the engineer came and said there was nothing wrong with it. We also had issues with the AC which seemed to improve after the filter was changed.

That first night, we walked to Just Tacos for dinner. Ko Olina is a great resort area. Just Tacos was just okay. Service was annoyingly slow. Then, we went to Target to grocery shop and headed off to bed by 9pm.

The next morning, my wife and I woke up early and walked the grounds before anything opened. We found the Oleo Room and met the server, Alohaland. We enjoyed having coffee in this room every moring and Alohaland was a wonderful hostess.

When the kids (adult girls 18 and 22) awoke, we had breakfast and went and found spots by the pool (lots of chair saving going on but Disney seems to be trying their best to control it.) We enjoyed our day by the pool even though the water is cold and the pool is crowded and the lunch poolside was "okay" at best and expensive. That night, we had professional photos taken of the family by Jerry of hawaiianpix.com (it was a surprisingly fun experience) and then headed off to Outback for dinner (good meal, great service at a reasonable price as you would expect in the Mainland.)

The next day was surf lessons by boat through hawaiiansurfadventure.com. Awesome experience. Girls both got up first time and I at least got to my knees. Someone pointed out Dog the Bounty Hunter (didn't know who he was until we watched his show later that night.)

That night was New Year's Eve. We had reservations at Roy's but due to fire, they were closed. I had made a back up reservation at Makahiki as well and we decided to use it to stay close to the resort.

At Makahiki, we were seated promptly. I was a little bothered by the fact the price had been increased for NYE w/o warning ($51 instead of $43.) A few items had been added to the buffet though to account for the increased price (lobster claws, crab legs). It's a good thing though as the standard buffet leaves a lot to be desired. I had read all the reviews but thought I needed to try both Makahiki and AMA AMA for myself (after Makahiki, I changed my mind about trying AMA AMA.) I don't mind paying $50 pp for a meal or even $75-$100 for a more memorable meal. However, the food at Aulani (at least Makahiki) is just plain bad. The next day, they began serving breakfast sandwiches in the Oleo Room so it is clear that they are trying to make changes. In my view, the problem with the food cannot be tweaked. It needs a major overhaul--as in firing whoever is in charge and starting over. It would be nice if Disney could contract it out to someone like TS Restaurants (Duke's, Chucks, Hula Grill, etc.)

I was also a little bothered by the style of dress at dinner. Some people were dressed in resort wear while others looked as if they just came in from the pool. I would have thought that this being NYE, everyone would have dressed for dinner. This is a minor complaint though.

After dinner, we returned to our room and did our best to stay awake for the midnight fireworks display (watching Dog the Bounty Hunter for the first time.) At 11:45, we headed down to the beach for an absolutely awesome fireworks display--one of the best ever. Great way to end the year.

I'll continue this later. A hint--a rough start the next morning but a terrific end at the Spa.
 
Looking forward to the next installment! Sorry to hear about the rough start - wouldn't have thought that housekeeping issues would already start rearing their ugly head. :( Also, strange about the dryer - when we used ours, it seemed to do a good job but OTOH, we were only asking it dry a medium sized load so maybe not the same as a load for 4 adults.

I agree that the food needs help - both in better quality and lower pricing. I am a little puzzled as to why Aulani seems to be having so much trouble with this as their executive chef, Patrick Callarec has extensive experience with resort food preparation both at the Ritz Carlton and the Four Seasons hotel chains. I've eaten his food at his old restaurant Chez Paul on Maui and loved it back then. Not so fond of the food that I had at Aulani though admittedly, we did not go to 'Ama 'Ama.

Hoping to hear good things about your spa treatments as this is one part of the resort that we didn't get to experience and would love to maybe try out the next time we go!

First to answer the last person's questions, I am a member and own at Aulani (as well as Hilton Head and Saratoga.) I would probably vacation again at Aulani but only for a short stay or a longer stay when grandchildren come.

Now, back to the review. New Year's Day had a disappointing start. We had been left a message the night before giving us instructions on how to check out. It turns out our reservations had not been linked by the front desk even though DVC had done so. Went to the front desk to get it straightened out around 6:30 am and told them about the AC problem and asked that it be looked at after 11am when the kids were up. We also asked to have our trash and towel done that day. After heading to the ABC Store across the street at 7am, the kids called and said maintentance came to repair the AC. We had seen the front desk clerk write in her notes please do not disturb until after 11am and the privacy sign was on our door. We told the kids to have maintenance come back later.

I had reserved a cabana for the 1st but cancelled it after determing it probably wasn't worth the money and being told that Casabellas (the chaise loungers on the beach) would be available as long as we showed up by 8am in the morning to reserve one. Showed up at 7:45am and was 5th or 6th in line. Was told after the first two people reserved loungers that no more were available as VIP Services had reserved the rest. One guy in front of me became really angry. I simply put pool towels on chairs and went and called my wife to ask her to bring down some items to reserve our spot by the pool (we were not going to be absent for more than an hour.) We had a nice day at the pool and had lunch and dinner in our room that day. We did not receive trash and towel service early as requested.

The next morning, I called VIP Services to politely voice my concerns about the issues we had experienced during our stay. I spoke with a man named Allen who was very nice and said he was aware of what happened with the Casabellas and wanted to try to find a way to make up for the issues we experienced. (He said they reserve 8 and Recreation has the other 12 and the problem was that Recreation had opened up at 7am and sold Casabellas for 15 minutes before shutting down and re-opening at 8am--really don't know who to believe, they just need to get the issues straightened out.) I thanked Allen and told him we were heading to the North Shore for the day but that he could call me later on my cell phone (all I was really hoping for was a Casabella the next day for which we would gladly pay.) Allen later called back and said he would like to give us admission to the Spa for our last day. I graciously thanked him as I was considering booking treatments anyway. We then had a nice day visiting the North Shore and I highly recommend Mackey's Shrimp Truck (almost the best meal we had.)

That night, we had dinner in our room before enjoying the Starlit Hui. Things were starting to look up. This is a very good show. For anyone considering a luau, we've been to several and my advice is to skip the luau and attend the Starlit Hui--unless you are considering the Fia Fia at the Marriott which I've heard is very good. Even then, I would probably have the buffet at the JW and then head to the Starlit Hui as an alternative. I saw several guests (probably from the neighboring resorts) being turned away because they did not have room keys--nice touch Disney. Housekeeping did do the trash and towel that day after I called them that morning before we left for the North Shore (we had not been on the schedule.)

Our last full day at Aulani--or the day that made Aulani shine. Headed down to reserve a Casabella at 7:30 am. Was 4th in line and had no problem (the resort was noticeably less crowded after the holiday weekend.) Our experience at the Lagoon that day was heaven on earth--perfect weather, comfortable lounger, and the best lunch of the trip--from the poolside bar at the JW. Delicious Kobe beef burgers and tuna sandwiches with fries or potato chips or taro chips for $15 each. The poolside bar at the JW has great food and they have become accustomed to making it to go for Aulani guests (they said they've heard the complaints about the food and genuinely hope it gets better for their own guests who want an alternative to their restaurants.) Oh, if I had only known this earlier.

About 4pm, my wife and I headed to the spa for what we thought would be an hour while the kids went to work-out. We have visited many spas, to include those at Ritz Carltons, Four Seasons and several Hyatts. This place has a WOW factor, especially the garden area, which is unmatched in our travels. The spa personnel were so friendly and our every wish was their command. When our daughters arrived, it didn't take us long to figure out that we should cancel our AMA AMA reservation and order room service to be delivered in the garden area. The food was mediocre (we weren't surpised) but the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings, especially the lighting illuminating the crystals in the trees, made for a very enjoyable evening (we stayed until 15 minutes before the spa closed.) Thank you Allen.

Upon returning to my room, I realized I left my glasses at the spa. I went back to get them and could not find them. Security was called by the spa staff who searched with flashlights until they could be found. Now, this is 5-star service.

In retrospect, I would have booked the spa at the beginning of the trip had I known it was this nice. I heard from one family how enjoyable the Ohana Massage session was. That sounds like a great way for a family to enjoy massages, time with each other and the garden area for a reasonable price. I heard from another woman that she couldn't get a reservation on NYE at AMA AMA and the spa personnel made it happen with a simple phone call. I cannot say enough good things about the spa and highly recommend it (use your vacation dollars for the spa, not the restaurants.)

Check out the next day was a breeze (except waiting for the dryer.) Walked around the resort the next morning to take some pictures and once again was able to appreciate the beauty of the resort. I will stay here again, but definitely do not feel the need to "see for myself" how bad the food is unless I hear substantial improvements have been made. There are much better options elsewhere (except I still want my morning coffee with Alohaland--and the coffee is very good.)

One final note. Aulani needs to develop some adult areas. I know it is a family destination but to attract honeymooners and adult couples repeatedly, some areas which are off-limits to the kids would be nice. After all, they get their space where we're not allowed and the DVC dues of those of us w/o kids of that age pay for it. I think Disney needs to consider the needs of all its guests. I would suggest the quiet pool near the spa be designated adult-only and that at least one whirlpool (or one level of the two level incredibly awesome infinity whirlpool) be designated adult only.

Nevermind- just looked it up- the Marriot.
 
Thanks for the tip about the JW Marriot Poolside Restaurant. Great suggestion. Did it take a long time to venture over in order to pick up lunch? I believe you are the first person to mention this as possible food option.
 
The JW Marriott is incredibly close and the service was very quick. It's closer than the ABC Store across the street. The onion rings are TDF.
 
i was wondering if you could give me any advice on what to do with our stuff while at aulani? for instance i want to bring cameras to take videos and pics of my kids, want to get the refillable mugs and use them all day, and want to wear a swimsuit coverup when not in the water and have sunscreen with us, but when we go swimming what do i do with all of this stuff? do we just have to always have someone sit out to watch the stuff or take what pics we want then bring everything back to the room , or do you just leave it and hope noone takes it or what? i am just wondering what most people do. also, will my husband have to have money to pay for stuff around the resort like food/souveniers etc.. or can all that be charged to the room with the key? thanks..can you tell this is our first vacation? lol.
 
Our practice was if it was electronic and begins with an "i", someone stayed behind or nearby (though there were times we hid items such as iphones or cameras and left for a short time.) Most flip-flops, cover-ups and even refillable mugs can be replaced more easily. While we had no problems, you need to be realistic. It is a large resort and like any other place that attracts a lot of people, it attracts a variety of types, including those who are less than honest.

We encountered a similar problem. There was an AWFUL AWFUL smell when we first walked into our 2BR. It was so pungent that I actually walked around smelling the kitchen trying to figure out what it was...it seemed like it was coming from the Fridge and when I opened the Fridge it smelled like food had gone bad in there.

Although we asked Housekeeping to come up and "reclean" the kitchen while we were out getting groceries, the smell wasn't much improved.

We bought Oxy Clean spray cleaner at Target and sprayed down the entire Fridge (including all glass panels), then washed all the panels in the sink and put everything back in before putting our own groceries away. I sprayed all the toilets/sinks as well.

We even bought a cinnamon apple Glade plug in thing to elminate the odor. Other than that issue (which was a turn off) and the oven smelling like oven cleaner when we baked our pizza, everything else in the Villa was really clean. I think ventilation in the villas may be an issue. We kept our sliding glass door open alot (w/the screen door closed).

I would suggest the quiet pool near the spa be designated adult-only and that at least one whirlpool (or one level of the two level incredibly awesome infinity whirlpool) be designated adult only.

Totally agree. We have a toddler and I was dismayed/annoyed to see toddlers in the whirlpool facing the lagoon. I'm not totally sure all of those toddlers in there were potty trained and uh, no, I didn't want to be in warm water with them. I would never have brought my own toddler in the whirlpool. I think hot tubs should be for adults. If not, then at least designate one level for adults.
 
Thanks Stlrod!! How did you know that I am an onion ring fanatic!!! Never saw and on order of rings that I could pass up on a menu. Now that's a lunch I am looking forward to.

Isn't there a sign designating the hot tubs for a certain age minimum?

A quality tuna sandwich with good onion rings is about the best lunch I can imagine!:thumbsup2

I hope Aulani improves on their food. It's such a big part of the whole resort and vacation experience. Did you have any cocktails there? How would you rate them?
