my AMAZING ground beef deal!

Of course OP had all the rights to buy it for that price. And she just wanted to share her find, nothing else and got herself in trouble not in a store, but here, on Dis, ironically enough on budget board. And stores do actually mark sometimes extremely cheap if product is about to expire. I once found yogurt, 4-pack for 25c, those usually $4. They were expiring in few days yet still perfectly good for those few days. Lets say we got a lot of calcium. :)

I also do not see anything wrong with buying the beef at that price.

Morally though, I would have notified someone in the meat department to confirm the price. I found a pack of Filet Mignon's at Kroger marked down to $4 not too long ago. I asked the meat clerk and he said "thank you for your honesty" and repriced them.

As for ground beef, up to 2010, .99/lb was our stock up price too. On Christmas Eve 2010, Kroger marked all ground beef off 90% about an hour before closing. We bought over 50 packs of Laura's lean and ground sirloin at .59 a pound!! Last year they had marked boneless/skinless chicken breast to .99 a pound. Obviously I will be visiting the Kroger meat department on Christmas Eve again this year.

Now I purchase ground beef at $1.99, and stock up when the meat market is 1.49/1.69.

If it had been me, I would have pointed out the error to the store. However, I have been known to take advantage of internet "glitches" (once got 2 weeks car hire for the price of one thanks to a glitch highlighted to people on the DIS boards!) and really there's not a difference between the two. :scratchin

I wouldn't see a difference. Robin Hood in books and cartoons is entertainment. Robbing from the rich (supermarkets...disney) to take for the poor (people with enough money to take disney trips ?) isn't entertainment. Nobody wants to be screwed for their mistakes.

I think most of the posters on here are just plain nuts!!!! She bought an item that was clearly marked with the price and that's the price she paid!!! It's not stealing, and it's NOT morally wrong. Although I love all the posters who think they are in a position to judge others and let everyone know what they think is moral or not. What a joke! I suppose with the logic on here of confirming the price, anytime you see what you perceive to be too low a price on ANY item, you should confirm it with someone at the store, lol. The store will LOVE all those price checks. You people are ridiculous! Leave the poster alone. Now let the judging of me begin! :)

To me the price was not a deal, so much as a price error that the store honored. For those stating about the laws that apply here, in CA - for example - there is a limit to the price of the item. In 2010, that price limit was $3.00.

Um, wow. It was marked that price, she didn't change stickers or anything. Geez, wonder how many of the people on here saying she is stealing were running to Walmart a couple weeks ago for that Lego Miner set that was mismarked in the ad!

How many would take advantage of a mistake in a friend's store?

Hm, I wonder what choices are ethically wrong when using coupons? I coupon and I cannot think of a single example.

I can give you a ton. Most often is people using a coupon for a wrong item and saying that it is okay because the machine accepts it. There have been so many coupon "scandals" where people use coupons on trial sizes (so that they can get money back against other items in their cart -- this only is allowed at certain stores) even though the coupons specifically excludes it. However, for whatever reason, the cash registers were not up to speed and would allow the coupon to be applied. Personally I think that is unethical and it causes companies to not want to extend coupons because they still have to pay the stores whatever the coupons says +$0.02 for handling -- so the company giving the coupons loses money on the deal instead of gaining business by luring consumers away from generic brands and to their brand instead.
That is just one example -- and there are many more out there. As the owner of a couponing website I could not endorse, condone or even allow people to discuss on my site that this is what they were doing or intended to do. I would have to say that you must follow what the coupon says regardless of what the register will allow.

I am sorry but I feel differently --- she knew that the price was wrong. She saw that the price on the sign and every other package of meat was different and she noted that the scale was off and thus the package was marked wrong. As I said before, I personally think the right thing to do would be to point it out to the manager of the department. The laws in her state may require the store to sell it to her at the marked price anyways. If all the items were marked the same or the sign/ad was incorrect then I see it differently.

wow...i wasnt going to respond because im usually a thread killer and figured this would have blown over by now!

right or wrong, as someone said its what you can live with. if i notice a cashier forgot to ring something up i will tell them. i have gone back into the store after looking at my reciept in the car and figuring something was not rung up. im not a dishonest/thieving/lying person.

i viewed this as my karma. $2 for 6 pounds of hamburger, for all the times i didnt pay attention and didnt look at my reciept until i was home and noticed i was charged 2x for something i bought one of or overcharged for something.

fwiw, i overspent my budget by $9!

I see nothing wrong with what the OP did. She paid the price that was on the package. It should be up to the store to make sure all printed prices are accurate. This is no more stealing than people who use double and triple coupons to get items for pennies or no charge.

I can't quite wrap my head around how doubling and tripling coupons is stealing? The stores offer up the opportunity to double and/or triple coupons and then they mark items at a certain price. If you think that these stores don't know that they are drawing people in by offering one item for next to nothing, you are incorrect. They know and they hope that people will come in and buy the limit of that item and then some other items as well.

Yes, using coupon for wrong size if there is actually restrictions is wrong but I never heard someone was actually doing it, I am regular on one popular couponing site and no tricks were ever discussed. All anger and scandals usually come from people who do not understand how it works. Some people say doubling is wrong and some will say money makers are wrong but just because they are ignorant, it does not mean that we are doing anything wrong. It is known fact that some cashiers will show you attitude with your coupons and if there is a problem, will come up with "rules" on a fly just to not let you use coupons. And processing fee is 8c, not 2c, at least on coupons I use, not sure how long ago you had this site.

I was thinking the same thing!! Very well said. I'm amazed on how quick people are to judge others and are actually accusing the OP of stealing! How nice for them to be so much better than the rest of us who would have loved to have gotten that deal.

It wasn't a deal though, a deal is a sale of somewhat. This was beyond that, it was taking advantage of the situation. Then trying to justify it since saying groceries are overpriced was a bit much, probably why a lot of us are having an issue with this.

I shut down my site last spring. You are correct, it is $0.08 most of the time.. I was typing too fast and hit 2 by accident. Sometimes I would ask people to write in their best shopping trip and would give a coupon envie away to the winner. Many times I would look at the list and know they had used the coupons wrong yet they would want to advertise it and would wonder why they were disqualified. The whole "the register let me do it" argument drives me crazy!

Here is the difference between the OP's AWESOME mispriced meat deal and mine:

Last year, my local grocery store had about twenty family packages of free-range, organic chicken (the expensive stuff) mistakenly marked at a ridiculous price (something like $.20 per package and each package was multiple pounds). I pointed it out to the meat manager and his first comment was that those had been out all day and no one had mentioned it and his second was he picked out the two biggest ones and handed them to me and let me buy them at that price.

After that, I would have (and even might have) posted here about what an AWESOME deal I found that day...because to me, I did the store a good deed and they rewarded me with practically free chicken. However, I would not have bragged about taking advantage of a store.

This is NOT stealing. I had an even better deal yesterday at my local supermarket. I got a 20+ pund fresh ham for 94 cents! Obviously mislabeled.

It was pointed out to the meat manager. He wasn't happy about it, but sold it at that price. I did not push for it and was fully prepared to leave it behind to be remarked. I am sure he was going to talk with his department to be sure the mistake doesn't happen again.

I felt guilty, but they chose to sell it to me at that price.

The difference is that you pointed it out to the store and they chose to honor the price.

And in the op's state they are also required to honor that price. Since there was no other mislabeled packages and the store is required to honor the price labeled, why exactly should the op have said anything? While the op chose some wording at the end of their post that wasn't the greatest, they didn't do anything wrong. Pointing it out to the meat dept. would not have changed the results.
