I'd ask him. If you ever want a truly open relationship with a guy, you need to be open yourself, honest, and take a few risks. It won't change his feelings for you if you ask. You will just know. If you are just friends, that is not the end of hope for romance. That could still happen later. If he does have feelings, it could get things going. Even if he is dating other girls, he may still like you.
I dated others while dating my husband. I did ask how he felt. He didn't feel the same way, so he said ...at first. I had also asked another guy in college. He only meant to be friends. We are still dear friends 25 years later.
If you vow to yourself to be honest in all of your relationships, you will be blessed.
Oh, but do not chase him. Guys are hunters. Flirt, back away. flirt back away. (rinse and repeat! LOL) Basically show him you like him and then give him time and space to figure out you are what he wants. (The honesty here is letting him know you like him.)
