I just got back from my 1st trip to DLR so thought I would share a few thoughts with everyone about my experience. I am a total Disney fan and really enjoyed my visit to Walts park.

Grand Californian Hotel - I loved this place!! I know many families enjoy staying off site, but we love to stay on site when we go to any Disney park and this hotel was wonderful. We had a view of Grizzly Peake and the monorail and loved sitting on the balcony just people watching when we were having an afternoon rest.

Food - Having read that DLR doesn't compare to WDW when it comes to food (I guess obviously there is more choice there as it is so much bigger) we were not dissapointed by our meals. We loved Napa Rose, we ate at the chefs counter and had an amazing meal plus great interaction with all the staff there.

VIP tour - I know they are expensive, but for us with it being our 1st visit and a place we know we won't be back to for many years it was so worth it. I had done a lot of research before our trip but some of the things we got to do on this tour thanks to our guide I wouldn't have imagined we would do (a private session at Turtle Talk with Crush, Billy Hill and the Hillbillies dedicating their show to us - very funny, riding Nemo with no wait - OK I know the guides are not supposed to be able to do this, but it was cool! Plus getting VIP viewing to all shows, parades etc)

The parks - I loved both the parks. At Disneyland I was expecting the castle to be small but was surprised how small other things seemed, BTMRR, the Matterhorn for example. This isn't a critisism, I thought they fitted really well with the size of the park, just something I was not expecting when I am used to WDW and DLRP.

The rides - I loved Space Mountain, different to the other 2 I have been on but still a great ride. I also loved Toy Story Maina, California Screamin and Grizzly River Run. Plus I loved the history of some of the rides in the Disneyland Park and the stories behind some of the attractions there.

The CM's - So friendly and really helpful, nothing was any trouble for anyone. One thing I was dissapointed by though was their percieved opinions of other Disney parks. I have been to Disneyland Paris many times and spoke to many CM's about the park. The all seemed to have such a negative view of Disneyland Paris which was a shame, but I told them all about it!

Segway tour - If you have chance to do this I highly recommend it, it was such fun. I know some people have had experiences where they were not allowed to take pictures on the tour as the park was not open but were were allowed to take quite a few pictures, just not of the 3rd shift crew working.

Pin trading - This I was dissapointed in. Although I did do a little trading with CM's I was dissapointed with how few CM's I saw wearing lanyards. I did see quite a few but perhaps I was expecting more. I did buy many cool pins though!!

OK thats enough rambling for now, I know I said a few thoughts.

Hi Dana,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. So glad that you had a great trip out to the Disneyland Resort! I agree about the VIP tour. I think it's really a good opportunity, and I plan to ride that Segway someday. :)

Hi Dana,

I know how much time and research you put into your trip and I am glad you had such a great time. Thanks so much for sharing.:)

I agree about the Grand, it does not dissapoint. And so glad Napa Rose lived up to its reputation.

And yes, the VIP tour is awesome and I am going on the Segway Tour in March with the Girls Only Trip and cannot wait!

What else did you like? Where else did you eat that was good? Did you try WWS? They remind me of a really good food court at WDW, something DLR lacks.

What else did I like?? I loved so much it is hard to narrow it down!! I really enjoyed Fantsmic and the electrical parade. I also loved getting to ride in the Lilly Belle. I also loved the little details, getting to ride in Walts firetruck down main street, seeing the lamp in Walts window, the little things only true Disney fans would notice!!

We did eat at WWS. It was so handy to grab a mid day bite there when we came back to the room for a break. We also enjoyed our meal at Blue Bayou, Storytellers (we did the buffet) and our character breakfast with Minnie and friends!! Oh and the Wine Country Trattoria, sitting on the patio with a nice glass of wine on a warm evening was lovely!!

I think overall I loved our room location, being able to come off Grizzly Peak soaking wet and seeing our balcony and knowing we would be in dry clothes in a few minutes!!

Eating at Napa Rose was amazing, I've eaten at quite a few fine dining restaurants and Napa Rose was probably one of the best meals I have ever had. The chefs came to talk to us, explained what they were doing, chatted about various things as they worked and they sent out a few samples of things in between courses as an amuse bouche. DH did the set menu with the wine paring and I asked the somalier to recommend wine with my courses and they were so good!! At the end of our meal the somalier asked us which was our favourite wine and gave us a free glass of each to take up to our room.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I went to DLP just over a month ago and having only ever gone to Disneyland California I was shocked at how big everything was there! So I totally understand what you meant about thundermountain being smaller.

Anyways, when I took the segway tour I was also able to take lots of pictures, except in one part (just like you it sounds like).

Did you have lunch or supper at story tellers? I'm going to be eating there for the first time in two weeks and I wasn't really able to get any information about the buffet. What sorts of food were served?

Thanks for sharing your observations with us! I am glad that you had a good time and that you loved CGH (we love it too!;) )

If you don't mind, I have just one question regarding the VIP tour. Did you get the parade/show VIP viewing just for the day of your VIP tour? Were you able to see all the parades/shows? Or, could you get the seating for another day of your trip?

Thanks! :goodvibes

I was told when booking that I could only have seating for the day of the tour and also that day no seating was available for the Disneyland parade that day. However once on the tour Karen put our names on all the parade/show lists plus the fireworks and fantasmic for the days and times we wanted to see them, some were several days later.

Thank you so much! We would like to do the same, since it might be difficult to see everything in one day, especially since it can be difficult to get from one event to another in time...

It sounds as if you had a receptive tour guide. Would you recommend her?

I would recommend her to everyone, I can't say enough nice things about this wonderful lady. She even gave us her home email address to send a few pictures to and her phone number in case we wanted her to arrange anything else for us during our trip. I was amazed at how she got us to experience things I hadn't even thought possible (and I spent 2 years on this board researching this trip!)

I am so glad to hear you had such a great trip!! I have only been to DL, and I hope someday (soon) that I get to visit WDW and DLP (and Hong Kong and Tokyo too)!! I always hear how small everything looks at DLR, I just hope I am not too overwhelmed when I get to these other parks!!

Did you get Dreamed at all?? What did you think of DLR POTC??

Buffets usually have old and overheated food, and Storytellers is no exception. The problem is that the menu makes it seem you're crazy for ordering a la carte. The buffet has soup (corn chowder when I was there), quite a few selections of entrees inclding a carved 'steak' station, and desssert for $29. Ordering everything a la carte would be much more. Instead, I ordered a lobster cobb salad, which was terrific and came with a fantastic dressing. It was $20 and more food than anyone can eat.

As is often the case, you will eat much better off the menu, but you can get many more different types of food on the buffet.

Glad to hear you came to California and had a great time.

Curious but what kinds of negative things did the CMs you spoke to have to say about DL Paris? I doubt all but a few have actually been there so I'm not sure what they could say, especially to someone like you who has been.

None of the CM's I spoke to had actually been to DLRP. They just said they had the impression that the CM's there were rude and unhelpful (which they are not, they all speak fluent English to you as well) and that the park was small. In fact the Disneyland Park at Paris is bigger than the MK at WDW.

As for getting dreamed, we didn't even see any dream squad members. We saw a few people with dream fast passes but that was it. And POTC I liked, but was surprised how long it was. I much preferred it to the WDW and DLRP versions.

Chef's Table at Napa Rose is Samantha Browns Favorite restaurant of ALLLL the Disney Parks. It's the best of the best.
