My 17yr old has Kidney Stones!!

Thank you for all of the replies. It looks like we are not alone with this, which is helpful for me. I had never heard of lemon juice, but it is now on my grocery list for tomorrow. At this point I will try anything.

Lauren is feeling a little better tonight. She has laughed some so that has been nice to hear again. I just DREAD Friday & this weekend. I know she will be in pain again after they bust it up, and I already feel so bad for her. :sad1:

Someone was telling me to have them tested to see what type they are and what is causing them. Does anyone know about this? Should I do this?

Yes, mine were tested and were calcium. I guess I drank too much milk and ate too much cheese. I still ain't given up my cheese. :rotfl:

My stones are oxylate, (vs calcium).. Oxylate stones are generally caused by eating food high in content and having a low calcium diet. (for example, strawberries, rhubarb spinach, and tea are all high oxylate products)..

As is ALWAYS the case, i am not much of a dairy consumer (never understood the whole consumption of breast milk from another species :confused3) but i LOVE my tea, and my favorite salad is a spinich and srawberry salad, and of course, i love love strawberry rhubarb pie....

:rotfl:

depending on the makeup of the stone, your diet WILL have change...

All of this started last Thursday and would you believe that it is STILL going on? Is this normal? She went back to school yesterday, but checked out in the afternoon because she didn't feel well. (althought she was fine when she got home) Last night we thought that maybe she passed it. She had chills, pain she was crying and a whole lot of drama. Later she was fine, but this morning I wake up to "I dont feel well", crying in the bathroom and all of this. I have NO idea if she really feels bad or if she is just trying to miss school, which she has a habbit of trying to do. I will call the doctor when they open, but this is awful. She will already miss Friday & maybe even Monday due to them busting the large one up on Friday. I just don't know what else to do. I want to be understanding, but I don't want to be taken advantage of, so if this is normal, please, please let me know.

Honestly thru all my bouts with stones they usually pass within 24 hrs. of the pain starting. One time though when I was 2 weeks from my due date for my dd I got the dreaded pain associated with kidney stones. It was decided that it was so big it wouldn't pass so immediately they brought me in to have it removed. When I got that epidural it was wonderful. The procedure was very quick and I had immediate relief. I'm surprised the doctor is letting the pain go on for so long.

As for getting tested I also did. I went to the bathroom in something for 24 hours. Then they tested. Mine are the type that you really can't do anything for (for ex. it's not calcium related). I'd def. get tested.

This is pretty serious so I hope your dd is telling the truth and not just trying to get out of going to school.

Oh and after the litho. it usually just takes me a few hours before I feel back to normal. I would doubt she would miss more school other than the day the procdure is done.

Let me know if you have any further ques. I'd be happy to help.

Thank you for you help. She told me a few minutes ago that today's pain is due to "that time of the month". I am beyond frustrated with her. I need her to be honest with me about all of this 100% of the time. It's nothing to play around with. :headache:

Also, when you said that you had litho for your treatment, what did they do? I am wondering if it is the same thing that she is having done. (hoping)

Well with my litho I needed someone to bring me to the facility. They put me under so I wouldn't feel anything. Then they send shock waves into you to crush the stone. I think they can only do it for so long - I'm thinking it was 1/2 hour. Mine was super stubborn and needed another litho. Then after the second it still wasn't broken up all the way (sorry to say). But I have no pain so I just have it monitored every 6 mos. I've had about 10 lithos in my life and this was the first time it didn't break up.

After the litho you side is a little sore (buy hey nothing like the pain from the stones). And like I said earlier I was back to normal after a few hours.

I think that this is what they are doing to her too. They told us that she will feel like she was kicked by a horse but she should be fine in a couple of days. I pray that she is better in a few hours like you were. I am already dreading it, and it's not even happening to me.

I had lithotripsy also...they waited 3 weeks before doing it so I was on pain meds and could hardly move..it was awful! Then afterwards I was really sore and still had to pass the stones...it took over a month to get it all done and over, it took me a little time to get back on my feet.

Is your daughter a small wisp of a thing or medium build, etc? The reason I ask is that will likely play a part in if she is awake during the litho treatment.

I am a large person. I went in on a Friday and saw another patient coming out of litho and they were in a hospital bed, basically out of it and hadn't come out of it when I had finished my treatment, peed (a requirement before you can go home), and could have walked out. During the treatment, I asked for more morphine and they said I'd had the limit. So, you just basically get through it. I guess morphine just doesn't do the trick for me. It knocked out the other person, but I was awake the whole time and never was "out" of it.

Not to scare you or anything, but I believe in being prepared. Hopefully, she is small and the drugs will semi-knock her out and she won't remember anything.

You get "thumped" by sound for 30-45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes are not fun, but weren't excruciating for me. The last 20 minutes were rather uncomfortable. But, you have to sit there and take the treatment to complete it. I couldn't get any more drugs. It is natural to want to move so that the area that is causing you pain is reduced, but with litho, you can't move because that is what you need to get accomplished.

If she passed the stone, she could tell. If you feel bad for a while and then recover, then feel bad again with pain high in your flank (just below your shoulder blade on the "bad" kidney side) then most likely the stone is trying to go down the ureter, but can't and goes back.

If you are passing a stone, you feel the pain start up in the kidney at the back, then it travels down your back side a bit and the pain then moves to the front as the stone goes down the ureter and into the bladder. Sometimes, the stone rolls around in the bladder a bit and you can feel a tinge of pain as it moves. Then, it hurts kind of strong briefly as it enters the urethra and exits the body. For females, the bladder out of the body route is much shorter than for males, so that really shouldn't be painful much at all. Plus, that "tube" is much larger in diameter than the ureters.

You also know you have passed a stone because you basically pee pebbles or concrete (what it can actually look like).

Well when I had mine they told me it was 1mm (per CT results) and send me home with a script for pain meds and to follow up with Urologist in morning.

Called office in morning said I would probably pass them on my own and they would see me friday afternoon. This was Tue or Wed.

So pain off and on till Friday afternoon. Doc pulls up my results it was 1cm:scared1: not mm. Starts talking about surgery. I'm a little freaked out telling him but they said I could pass it at home with the pain meds. Tried to schedule surgery to put stint in could not get litho for over a week. Left office with appointment for stint first thing monday. With instrustion with intense pain for more than 10 minutes to go to ER. I said what about the pain meds. His response was "for a stone that size you might as well be poppin' tic tacs."

Fortunatlly Litho worked great passed the fragment with very little discomfort. Stint was very uncomfortable and when Doc offered to remove it in the office instead of hospital I was thrilled. I cannot remember any discomfort from the Litho probably because the pain from the stone was gone.

Have not had a problem for over 7 years so hopfully it is a one time thing with your DD. Have her drink lots of water. It is extremely painful worse than the birth of my 9lb DD without drugs.

Oh my that was a long post. Sorry!

I think I had a stent in me twice. I found it super uncomfortable. Lately it hasn't been offered and I would have declined. It makes you have to pee nonstop (sorry to be so blunt).

when I did my litho I was put all the way under and woke up by the dr when it was done.It was painfull afterwards but not as bad as the stone.
