My cat "catapulted" off my face last night and I woke up really quick when I felt my cat's nails go in my face.He got me on each side of my bottom lip,on my chin and under my chin. And my hand has a big scratch right across it.
Every where his nails went is swollen now.
Do I need to see a doctor?Or should I just keep putting peroxide and neosporin on them?
I'm even thinking of not going to work. What do you guys think?
Thanks for any input.
Debbie

OUCH Debbie!

I don't know what to say. Just sending you some support. I think keep up with the Neosporin for now until someone else answers. That was the first thing I thought of. Take some asprin too, or an anti-inflamatory. Is Advil one? And try some ice on the swelling. It may become apparent later if you really need to see a doctor.

I think RNMom usually comes here early mornings. You might want to drop her a PM to ask. She might get the PM email notifications and come on anyway. She's the only nurse here I can think of off hand. :scratchin

Is your cat an indoor or an outdoor cat? If he's indoor, he probably won't have been walking on anything funky. So the possibility of infection may be down. Still, if the claw marks are deep, you might want to see a doctor, so there is less chance of scarring. :(

Hi Imzadi.Thank you for your support and response.
My kitty is an indoor cat.None of my cats have ever done that before.Jumped over but never on my face.
I'm just glad he did not get my eyes.
I wouldn't normally not want to go to work but I work reception and I really don't want to show up swollen and looking like I got punched in the face or something.
Thanks for any input.

I don't blame you for not wanting to go in to work this morning. Take it easy and pamper yourself a little. :drinking1

debden ~ first off

We have a cat that we found out back last spring and she has become a housecat. She's still pretty young and wants to play rough a lot. Each time she scratches my hands, I puff up because I'm allergic ~ maybe try a Benedryl if you have any in the house. Hope you're feeling better soon!

disclaimer: I am not nor do I claim to be a DisDoc ~ just offering my opinion, LOL ;)

I would see a doctor. It is your face. Plus since it is swollen, might be a good idea to get it looked at.

Ouch I don't know I would go unless teh scratches are deep and look like what you are cleaning them with dosen't help. Hope the swelling does down.

good thing your eyes didn't get scratched!! i don't think i would go to the doctor. just clean the scratches good and keep an eye out for extra swelling or redness in case you get an infection. other than that, it probably just looks and feels bad!
sorry, this is kinda like laughing when some body falls down, but i keep picturing you just snoozin away, minding your own business.........and that cute cat in it's pounce position. you know, head down, butt up in the air wiggling and waiting for just the right moment to JUMP on your face!!!! wonder if you were snoring?!!!:lmao:

The same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. We have 6 cats and some of them were sleeping on the bed. One of the other cats saw something outside (I guess) while sitting on the window sill and made a sudden move and the blinds made a really loud noise. This startled someone on my bed and the bolted.... right across my face. Talk about a rude awakening. I only ended up with one scratch. It was under my eyebrow. Hurt like &^*%# for a little while. And it bled a bit too.

I cleaned it and put neosporin on it. My whole eye area hurt for a few days and the whole eye area swelled a little bit. It kind of felt like I got punched in the eye. I took anit-inflammatories and iced it a bit too. After a couple of days, the swelling went away and the cut is healed now. I never went to a doctor but my eyeball itself had no injury.

Unless you think the eyeball itself is injured or you believe that any of the scratches are infected and you can't get it under control, I don't think there is any need to see a doctor or not go to work. Take anit-inflammatories and apply neosporin and I think you'll be fine.

If you would like to conceal, I recommend Bare Escentuals bisque make up (in the shade that matches your skin) and a concealer brush. It works like a little eraser and works really well on healing wounds like a scratch from a cat.

Ouch.. one of mine got me about a month ago also. I was in bed and he reached out and got my eye and eyelid. Took my contact right out. The only thing I could think that provoked him was me blinking. I already had a eye drs appt the next day and she gave me some cream for the eyelid. I think if might of been worst if I didnt have contacts in .

I would get it checked out- better safe than sorry. Considering all the litterbox scratching they do, their claws can be really nasty!

Be sure you keep a close eye on the scratches (which of course you will, considering they are on your face). I had a nephew who had cat scratch fever (the cat had Bartonella, unknown to the owner of the cat who scratched him) It wasn't fun.

My BIL had a very bad reaction to a cat scratch for the same reason. And this was their own tame, well-cared for cat. Think about those sweet little paws clawing around in the bacteria rich litter box. Just be aware.

I probably wouldn't go to the Dr. today, but keep a close eye for any signs of infection. A couple of years ago, my cat jumped up on the bed in the middle of the night and landed on my face. Her toenail dug into the skin just under my eye and punctured it. The spot was really ugly and swollen the first couple of days, but I kept neosporin on it and it healed and left a small scar. I was really self conscious about it and tried to cover it up as much as possible with make-up.

I would go to the DR today, just to be safe and have peace of mind that it won't turn into something worse.

Feel better!!

sorry about your face but lol!

re: the scratches swelling up ... I don't know why, but every time I get even the tiniest scratch by a cat, it gets puffy, swollen, and bright pink. I'm a lifelong cat owner and let me tell you -- I've gotten a ton of scratches! I suppose I might be slightly allergic to cat dander or something - who knows?

I'd just wait another day or so and see if the swelling starts to go down ... maybe ice them in the meanwhile.

Me too. I was on long round of antibiotics. Better safe than sorry. I'd go get it checked.
