This will be our first time to DL

What are your favorite attractions (we have DD18 and DS15 with us)?

What are your favorite meals (especially desserts...yum)?

What are your fav drinks (alcoholic or non)?

Rides not to miss...

DL... Indiana Jones, Matterhorn, POTC (better than WDW version), Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin, IASW (also better than WDW)

DCA...Soarin' over California, California Screamin', Grizzly River Run

Almost forgot...don't miss the Animation Building in DCA.

And since you have been to WDW, try not to be dissapointed by the castle...too many WDW vets let that happen. The castle was never designed to be a centerpiece like at WDW. It was designed to be an entrance into, and a part of, Fantasyland.

The Blue Bayou Restaurant which is on the banks of the Pirates of the Carribean ride. Good food and awesome atmosphere.

I really like Snow White's grotto by the castle. Didn't know it was there and just stumbled on it. Really neat, especially since Snow White herself was there signing autographs.

The carousel is newly redone and looks totally fabulous, so don't miss a peak at that.

For a non-thrilling ride the Storybook Canals are my favorite. It is a quiet, serene boat ride with a peak at lots of characters "home towns". Great chance to sit down and rest for a little bit.

I like the Autopia, but may be passe for your older kids. Mine are yonger and really like the Chevron Cars so this was really fun!

Mr. Toads Wild Ride is famously no longer available at WDW but still at DL.

Poke around in New Orleans square. This is different than WDW and we really enjoy just looking around here.

Whats the name of the restaurant that has the Mickey pancakes? Used to be Aunt Jemima but has more PC name now. Someone will know but it has the BEST pancakes.

Fantasmic on the Rivers of America is stunning and the fireworks show over the castle is also amazing. Tinkerbelle comes from the Matterhorn and it seems everyone has a better view of her than at WDW.

Splash Mountain is also different, but I like WDW better. You decide for yourself. But there is no COMPARISON among Its a Small World. The one at DL is miles better than WDW.

At DCA I agree with items posted before. We also really like exploring around California Redwood Challenge. And have heard good things but have not seen the Aladdin Show there.

Disneyland:

Eats; Blue Bayou (make reservations), Rod Rockets Pizza Port & Plaza Inn.
Rides; Indiana Jones, Space Mtn (closed till 2005), Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Big Thunder Mtn, Roger Rabbit Spin Ride (Toontown), and Pirates of the Caribbean.
MUST SEE: Fantasmic

DCA:

Eats; Ariels Grotto, Taste Pilots Grill.
Rides; Soaring Over California (next to Taste Pilots Grill), California Screamin'. Grizzley Rapids River Run and Mailaboomer.
MUST SEE: Animators Building, Aladdin the live Show.

DOWNTOWN DISNEY:

Eats; Ralph Brennans Jazz Kitchen (too die for), Wetzels Pretzels, Catal. Was highly disappointed in Rainforest Cafe (too much noise, service was bad, food took too long).
MUST SEE: House of Blues, Dept 54, ESPN Sports Cafe (video game area)

CHARACTER BREAKFAST:

There are 4 to chose from, Goofy's Kitchen located at the DL Hotel is the best by far. The worst in Chip and Dale at The Grand Californian. If you are into Pooh Characters then do The Plaza Inn located inside DL but it is Pooh characters only.

:smooth:

Thanks so much!!!! Great information-keep it coming!!

You mentioned 4 character breakfasts-can you tell me what where and who are at them?

We are thinking to split our stay between GC and DLH-both concierge. Any opinions?

Does DL have a concert series (like WDW Flower Power) or special events happening?

last year DCA had a summer concert series, check out DLR site, www.disneyland.com and it would most likely have that information for you or again you can call the park info.

Their are 4 character breakfast venues, I have done them all so here is my rating from best to worst:

#1...Goofy's Breakfast: located in the DLHotel. Great decor and atmosphere. Lots of characters, photo ops before you are seated and during with characters at you tables. Music for the kids to dance to with characters. Reservations a must unless you want to wait 40 minutes or longer for a table. Food good.
#2...Minnie & Friends: located in the Disney Paradise Pier Hotel. Good decor and atmosphere. Plenty of characters, I felt it was more geared towards girls than boys but that is just my opinion. characters come to tables for photo ops. Food good.
#3...Plaza Inn: located in the Disneyland Park, end of Main Street on the right. This is the only character breakfast that DOES NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS AHEAD. Winnie the Pooh characters only and plenty of them, wonderful food and photo ops.
#4...Chip & Dales Breakfast: located at The Grand Californian Hotel. Beautiful decor, atmosphere very blah. Only 3 characters when we went; Chip & Dale and Pluto. They DID NOT come to the tables for photo ops. Food great but for a character breakfast for the kids (whether the kid is 5 or 50) is not good. VERY boring.

There is also a character lunch/dinner venue at Ariels Grotto located inside DCA just over the bridge. I have done the dinner and had a blast. Lots of characters in sailor attire; Minnie Mouse, Chip & Dale, Pluto, Goofy and Ariel. When I went dinner was approx. $20.00 per adult but that included appetizer, entree, drink and dessert and the French Onion Soup was to die for. They take reservations.

Hope this helps.....dianedisney

Don't miss Blue Bayou or Fantasmic!

Have a mint julep, either at Blue Bayou or at the drink window in the French Quarter.

Also, we enjoyed Goofy's Kitchen for dinner.

Indy is my top "don't miss" ride!

Most of the rides are great, but some of the rides are best experienced at nighttime. I recently went on Big Thunder at night and was amazed at how much more enjoyable it was. Ditto for the Storybookland canal boats. It's all lit up and very beautiful.

And While I'm at the subject of nighttime. There's an area in the back of the Grand Californian hotel that me and my friends love to just sit around and relax and talk. It's a little area that has a fireplace and overlooks the back of Paradise Peir. There are rocking chairs you can sit on and it's great to just soak in the sounds of Paradise Pier at night.

As far as eats go, my favorite place to have dinner is at New Orleans Square. I believe it's the French Market Restaurant. It's the one with the live Dixieland Jazz band at night. I usually get their fried chicken plate. And to the right side of the restaurant there's a place where you can get really good apple fritters and MINT JULIPS.

I love going to Disneyland for their food! My favorites are:

-The above mentioned apple fritters and mint julips at New Orleans Square.

-Banyan Beef Skewers and the Pineapple Juice at Adventureland.

-This Pasta dish at Redd Rocket's Pizza Port in Tomorrowland. The name escapes me right now, but if you ask a cast member there what's their most favorite dish that's the one they'll probably tell you. There's actually only two pasta dishes. the other is the spaghetti and meat balls. Oh and if you think about buying the garlic bread because it looks good, I would advise not to. Not because it's bad or anything, but it's only average and not worth the price you have to pay. I bought it and wound up only eating the top part with all the butter and cheese. The bread itself is kinda dry and has no taste.

-The enchilada plate at Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland. It's not the best enchilada plate I've ever had but it's a nicely themed restaurant with a covered outdoor eating area.

I've heard that DCA has really good food, but I don't really spend that much time over there. Of course with the TOT opening up that might change.

Of the places I have eaten there's this one burger place right next to Soarin over California that's pretty good. I like their onion rings and the fact that you can put as many toppings on your burger as you want. ( There's a cart with all the condiments and as much lettuce, pickles and tomatos that you want)

I tried the chocolate churros that they sell at Flikk's Fun Fair and that was pretty good. ( They actually just provide you with chocolate dipping suace. )

Also, I saw this one place on the Monterey Bay warf area that sells different types of fortune cookies. (ie Chocolate covered, sprinkled, basically like a donut store for fortune cookies.)

Downtown Disney also has some good restaurants.

Rainforest Cafe- Love their raspberry lemonade and coconut chicken strips. Plus there's that fish aquarium you have to walk underneath when you're seated to your table.

Naples- Good restaurant but a little pricey. Their calamari appetizer plate is very big though.

And there's this place that sells cookies and candy there but I don't know the name of it. But they have this great Raspberry and chocolate chip cookie. Yum.

And be sure to pick up the cherry sour balls that they seel at the World of Disney store. Hands down the best cherry sour balls.

Oh my!! My mouth is watering. I'm taking this post along for reference LOL!

Another question about food (a little preoccupied with eating now):

Which restaurants or character meals have a buffet type of meal?

Goofy's Kitchen is a buffet, not sure about the other character meals.

At DCA, I like Award Wieners. The Caesar Dog is great! The Mexican place in DCA is pretty good for counter service, and they have good margaritas.

The Caesar Dog is great!

Yes it is! I tried one simply because it sounded so strange and loved it!

PCH Grill at PPH does a buffet for breakfast.

We are definitely in for the caesar dogs and margaritas!!
Thanks for the info.

The Character Breakfasts are all buffet.
Ariels Grotto/Character Lunch/Dinner is sit down service.

Would you know which characters are regulars at which meal?
Is there somewhere I can get this info?
Thanks.

The only for certain in:

Chip & Dale Breakfast - Chip & Dale
Goofy's Kitchen - Goofy
Minnie & Friends - Minnie
Plaza Inn - All Winnie the Pooh Characters.

I would call the resort hotels or the priority seating number and maybe they could tell you more. I know everytime I have dined at Goofy's Kitchen (9 times) The Mad Hatter, Pluto, Fox villian in Pinochicco has been there. I have also seen Snow White alot, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Ape from Tarzan, Chip & Dale, Donald Duck (this one talked), NEVER Mickey he is in the park only. Unless there is an event at the resort hotel and he has been rented out. FLASH NEWS: Alot of people don't know it but you can rent characters for special events at the resort hotels, such as; conventions, seminars, family reunions, special birthday party, etc. BUT, they don't come cheap, last time I heard (which was 3 yrs ago) Mickey was going for $500.00 per hour. Other minor characters may be cheaper, but I don't know. If you ever want to rent a character I would suggest you call guest services and they can refer you to the right person to talk to.

Thanks for the info!! We'll be attending a convention as well-maybe they've got something special planned.

I tried the Wine Country Trattoria at DCA on my last trip and really liked it. It's sit down, a bit nicer than most of the other places, and you can make a priority seating. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. This is "Italianesque" and offers sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta and a nice sized wine list. The average entree price was around $10. I had the Italian Meat Lovers sandwich which came with potato salad. It was really good.

My past experiences at Blue Bayou have not been the best food or service wise, but I keep going back for the atmosphere. This last trip it was wonderful all around. The food and the service were great. I had the crab cakes and for dessert the baked apple (apple slices and cinnamon in a puff pastry topped with caramel sauce). The baked apple was huge, seriously enough for 3 or 4 people and cost $6. It was the best dessert I had the whole time I was at DLR.

You get the most characters at Goofy's Kitchen. I have seen Goofy, Chip, Dale, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, Baloo, Timon, Mad Hatter, Cruella de Vil, Belle. As someone else said, this is a buffet. I prefer the breakfast/lunch as it is quite a bit cheaper than dinner. Ariel's Grotto is a price fixed meal. You choose from a few soups/salads to start, then you choose from about 8-9 entrees. At dinner I think it also includes dessert. Here I've seen Goofy, Pluto, Minnie, Chip, Dale and sometimes Ariel (she's not always there). They are dressed in beach wear which is very cute.

Has anyone eaten at Ariels or at the Hard Rock Cafe, Fashion Island?
