Murder Mystery Help

I am trying to put on a murder mystery themed event and I'm looking for some help and ideas on how to exactly plan this out. We are gonna have about 7 or 8 main characters, we want to base it loosely on the Clue board game and movie. I want to try to stick with the 1930-40's english mansion decor and music. I need to come up with a story line and character bios.
Where do I begin? Has anyone ever done anything like this? What can I search for regarding music style? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am doing a murder mystery tomorrow!
It is my first one -the company that I bought the mystery is called dinner and a murder. It is online and has a discussion board.
The murder is planned out -everyone has a character assignment and a few things they have to do-but no script.
I can post back about how it goes!

They have "kits" you can buy that gives out the clues etc. They are fairly inexpensive. I have done two of them and had a ball. My advice is to have "back up " characters. What we did is my dh and I were the butler and maid and in case someone didn't show up, we could fill in. It is a mess if someone gets sick at the last minute and you have to get someone to take their place. Then they fill like the B list....
