I am looking at a trip that involves two airlines enroute. I know many airlines have in-line agreements and these things work seamlessly, but the two are Frontier and United. If I fly MSP-DEN on Frontier and then United DEN-RNO, will they check my bag all the way through or would I have to pick it up and recheck it in Denver? This is being offered to me on CheapO Air's site.....

Thanks.

If you can book this flight on United there is a good chance that the luggage can be checked through.

However it is my understanding that Frontier does not have any interairline agreements.

Are you seeing this on Kayak or through Frontier or United? If its the former its probably not a true connected reservation; its not just luggage transfer issues you should be concerned with then, if either of the flights have difficulties, the other carrier has no responsibility to you.

If you can get this on a single ticket, with a single fare, you should be in good shape. The ticket will be issued on either Frontier or United "ticket stock" (although it's actually electronic). You and your luggage will get from your origin to your destination. You're "protected," even if the first flight is delayed.

If it's a case of having two separate tickets on the same day, DON'T DO IT.

With two tickets on two different airlines, if the first flight is late, you're a no-show for the second flight. And if the schedule changes for either airline, you may have to pay an expensive change fee and fare difference to the the flights to match up again.

Hopefully I don't add confusion to the mix. But I have seen where a person has purchased a ticket thru (Expedia/cheapo air/Travelocity/etc) that shows Seattle to Denver, Denver to LAX using two different airlines. The info the person had gave them no indication that the travel company actually purchased two seperate tickets for each flight. Unfortunately, their first flight cancelled and I could only rebook them to Denver as that was the only ticket I had any control over. I felt for them as they had to wait on hold with the travel company to rebook them. This is not a typical issue. Usually only pops up during high travel/vacation times. That I've experienced anyway.

Just be very aware of your fare. I always suggest checking the carriers' site b/c sometimes they have the same deal or maybe a slightly more expensive option. Sometimes the travel sites offer great deals, but issues arise like the one in the previous paragraph.

One other suggestion, go online to the starting carriers website to check out your reservation. Make sure to put in a phone number and maybe an email address. The travel company doesn't release that info to the carrier, so they are unable to contact you if a cancellation were to happen to confirm a new reservation. Worst case, call the starting carrier and have them add your phone number to your reservation.

As for the ticket stock, I've seen a crazy ticket done on American ticket stock, outbound flights united and alaska and return flights us airways and delta. With all the code share agreements it's really a new world with regard to ticketing.
