So we just got back from WDW and doing the full and are looking at taking a family vacation in May. Has anyone done the Muddy Buddy? I am tempted just because it sounds like fun but have no real idea what I would be getting into. Do you have to bring your own bike and helmet or do they supply them? Is there any cool medal, etc at the end? I'd love details from anyone who has them to help us make the decision.

Thanks,
jen

Chester has done it Jen. I'm pretty sure he did it with his son Chet last year.

Chet and I have done it all three years that WDW has had it. DS17 Miranda and her BF also did it last year. I've already signed us up for this year.

It is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. Also, it's really hot and humid in May.

You need to bring your own bike and helmets. The course is not technical, but there are some sections of sugar sand that are tough to ride through. Most people use mountain bikes. I used a hybrid 29'er that works really well.

There are no medals for finishers, only awards for the first 3 in each class. You do get a t-shirt at check-in. The 2006 and 2008 shirts were typical cotton t's. 2007 they had Under Armour tech t's.

There are a lot of participants. Classes are broken down by gender and combined ages. Starts are 5 minutes apart and I was finished before Miranda started.

The race consists of 5 legs and totals a little over 6 miles. At the start, one team member takes off on the bike and the other starts running 1 minute later. 1.25 miles +/- later the bike rider dismounts and goes through the 1st obstacle, then takes off on a run to the 2nd obstacle. Meanwhile, the runner navigates the 1st obstacle, finds the bike and rides towards the 2nd obstacle. The bike rider and runner switch duties at each obstacles until the reach the final obstacle - the mud pit. Both team members have to enter the mud pit together and crawl through. Then it's just a short hop to the finish.

After the finish they have some sport drinks and a hose-off area.

There will not be transportation provided by WDW.

Any other questions?

Chester

Thanks Chester!

This one might be tough for us, we will probably be there that week (we like to go in May), but bringing bikes would be hard because we are flying down from NJ, but we will ponder it, it does sound like fun.

I was wondering about this too. Is there such a thing as renting a bike for this?

Thanks

Jen
Just buy a $100 bike from Walmart and return it after the race. :lmao:

If you have a really good bike, have a local bike shop send it to my house and I'll bring it over for you. The cost would probably be about $50 each way.

I don't know if any of the local bike shops have rentals, but its worth a try.

The biking is not as important as the running - The team member on the biking leg almost always beats the runner to the obstacle. The advantage of the bike is that it gives you a little bit of rest from running.
