My DSD12 found this MP3 player while leafing through the Disney Store catalog and now she really wants it for Christmas. I would like to get it for her, but I know NOTHING about what makes an MP3 player good. So, for those of you in the know, give me some opinions about this one. How many songs will it hold, will I have to buy extra things to be able to download music, how easy might it be to use? Thanks in advance!

Good is ease of use and whether the mp3 player has good sound. Both the iPods and the Creative players are well known, and are fine choices. So would the Dell DJ be a fine choice. A company called iRiver also makes a good one for a lesser price.

But, and here is the thing, not all devices are compatible with all music download services. But, on the plus side, most services are just fine... stick with the well known sites and you will be "safe".

As far as how many songs each mp3 player will hold? Well, ya gotta just read the box. My opinion is that you need at LEAST 1 Gigabyte of storage, but that is just me. They have them up to 40 gigs.

I have the iPod and the iShuffle, which are both Apple products. While more expensive than others, Apple makes a GREAT product, and their iTunes software is AWESOME!

So, best advice? If you don't know enough, stick with a major player... Apple, Creative, Dell, and yes, even iRiver ( while not well known, they do get great reviews ).

BTW.... you never linked what "this" Disney mp3 player actually is. But my guess would be that it isn't made by a major player in the mp3 player market.
Good luck.

Well, that makes it a "card" based player, not a hard drive besed player. That is how the iShuffle works. The base unit posted has VERY LITTLE storage for music, and I mean VERY LITTLE. It is capable of adding more by adding an additional card.... read more money, to make it worthwhile IMO.

Depending upon song and compression you "might" get 75 songs on the player out of the box.... probably less. I'll go do the math and then edit this post.

OK, here is the EDIT
: the base player will hold ABOUT 40 songs. Could be a few more or less. I'm sure she likes it because of Tink, but really, IMO, this is not a good deal. But if she is a Tink fan...... :)

Well, she does love her "Tink"!! Also, we wanted something that her older brother (who lives with her at her mom's house) wouldn't take!!! He has a tendency to do that!

How much does more memory run for something like this? Also, how easy is something like this to use? Does it just plug into the computer?

I saw the same item the other day at Target in the Electronics department. I would suggest you go there, look at it, read the back of the package and see what other items they have for it.
We have ipods at our house (4 of them) and they are great. The itunes software is very easy to use (my DH can use it, which says a lot for ease).

Memory might be anywhere from "about" $30 to $100 depending on how much and the type. 512 MB of memory will get you about 225 songs, give or take. And don't worry, it "should" be very easy to use.

Okay, another quick question. Are you able to delete songs off of it when you get sick of them (or if we determine they shouldn't be on there.)?
