I'm pretty ignorant about electronics. Hope I can get some help from my DIS friends.

I bought DS, now 16, a refurbished IPOD Shuffle a few years ago as recommended here, but it didn't last him too long. Maybe 7 or 8 months. I don't think he abused it. Maybe we just didn't get a good one.

Someone gave him a cheap off-brand one for Christmas that year that lasted him for a couple of years, but then broke.

I thought I was doing a good thing when Staples had a Memorex version on sale black Friday and I bought it. I guess I'm showing my age, but I though Memorex was a good company. My son never heard of them. First one, straight out of the box, had a defective volume gadget. It would turn up, but not down. I exchanged it for a new one. Second one was giving him a different problem before the first day was over. Now, 1 1/2 weeks later, it doesn't work at all and I'm going to return it.

Now I guess I owe him a different one since this was his Christmas gift. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but would spend a little more for reliability. HELP me?

Thanks,

Sheila

Ive had really good luck with my walkman mp3/video player from bestbuy (i do not buy apple products if i can help it) ill post a link in a few seconds

one of the big sellers for me was the built in speaker, its not really loud but it sounds good. Its a very user friendly device and i love telling people that i have a walkman because they immediately assume the big yellow cassette tape player.

One word SANSA mp3 players is great . I love mind to death. The place I would check is buy.com, woot.com and the slickdeals.com front page. I love how sansa is so easy to use. Drag and drop is a excellent. You can buy music from amazon and walmart with gift cards too.

I have heard good things about the Sansa players...and they are not very expensive.

I don't know why the iPod shuffle would have torn up so quickly, might be an odd case. I do not like the shuffles because they do not have a screen. I have generally had good luck with the iPod products, I have an old iPod mini, that has been left in the car in freezing weather, in hot weather, I have dropped it while on the treadmill and it still works fine.

I love my Zune and my Sansa clips for my walk around music/radio,

Depends on what you want to spend. I love my Ipod touch and I was never a big Apple fan until I got this :)

If you are not wanting to invest that much I recommend the sansa fuze. I had one before the itouch and love it. They are not too expensive and have great features. Size is good for carrying in your pocket. You can load music, photos, video clips and it has a voice recorder and fm radio. The battery life is awesome and you can use a micro sd card and add additional space to the player. Mine is an 8 gig with a 4 gig SD card. I still use it when I am places I'd rather not have my itouch like the at the beach.

:) At 42 with no children you will have to take my advice with a grain of salt. I have owned 2 Ipod Nanos- I think second generation and fourth generation. Both are still working great. The first one didn't have enough space on it eventually, so I have given it my MIL who of course uses it sparingly. I have had the one I am using now for at least 2 years and have about 2500 songs, video and audiobooks on it. Works terrific every night since I use it to go to sleep. It still holds a great charge and I guess I charge it good every couple of weeks.

Now I do also have an Iphone and so does DH. He uses the Ipod touch, and goes to sleep with it at night--it is at least 2 years old and going strong.

My Father has an 80g Ipod that has also lasted him 2 years, playing it daily in his Bose system. I bought him a Shuffle this Christmas for mowing grass and walking the dog--he loves it.

I guess what I am saying is all of our Ipod products have worked very well and with no hangups.

This Christmas one of the girls at work daughter asked for an Ipod. THe supervisor and I told her to get a touch. I told her that would really score points with a 17 year old who didn't ask for a touch. She was able to get one online I think from Walmart with a 50$ gift card. The child was so stoked about it and I took great pleasure in telling her I had her back--when her Mom had questions about them---so I scored points too.

We have three Sansa Fuzes in our house. My 13 yo dd has an iPod nano. The Fuze is a much, much better value, imo. We got all of ours refurbished, from Buy.com, Overstock.com and woot.com. One of the really great things about the Fuze is that you can upgrade the memory to something ridiculous just by buying a microcard.

Our DS about five or six years ago, came to us with his non working Ipod. He didn't know why is just stopped working. We looked it over, there was no visible damage to it, it just wouldn't turn on, or do anything anymore. Fast forward to last year, I was transferring all mini DV we have from the camcorder tapes onto actual DVDs. Low and behold I came upon a tape and began to record it to a DVD. It was DS and his friend inside the garage with their skateboards, grinding on a bar...which is jumping up on the bar with your skateboard and riding along the bar to the end. Well, DS jumped up, missed the bar and fell on the garage floor, reached in his pocket and pull out his Ipod....and said ut oh. He and his friend began trying to get the Ipod to turn on, then...tape ended.

Thought I'd share my I don't know what happened to it, it just stopped working story.

Thanks for all the tips and the funny story.

I plan to research and order over the weekend.

Feel free to continue with any additional suggestions.

Sheila

We bought 2 Sansa Fuze MP3 players for the holidays...DS got one for his 8th birthday (4MB) and DH got one for his holiday gift (8MB)...both were half price on specials at TRU at different times so we paid $39 for DS and $49 for DH. They seem great so far! :thumbsup2:
