DW would like an MP3 player and our new vehicle has a jack in it so we can play it through the speakers, so I figured now would be a good time to look into one... but there are so many out there it's nuts. We don't want a tiny one that we can read the screen on (so the ipod Nano, for instance, is out of the picture, as is the shuffle). We also don't want to spend $300 on it.

So... what kind do you have in the $100-$150 range that has decent storage and a big enough screen that you can read the menus and actually see what is playing, etc?:confused3

Creative Zen - comes in different sizes (4, 8, 16, 32GB) and also uses an SD card to increase the capacity. Does NOT use ITunes to sync - uses Windows Media or other - which for me is much much easier and allows more music formats. Credit card sized, but virtually all of that is the screen, so you can easily see everything.

Available at places like Circuit City, BestBuy, etc. Not "cheap" but well worth the price as it's easy to use. Also available through the Creative website.

DD and I have different versions of the previous model - Creative Zen Vision and Vision:M and love them both.

Good luck!

I have 2 zens.... one 8gb and one 30 gb I love both of them!!! I bought both of my at buy.com :)

I would have suggested my nano, because I love it...I can definitely read the screen on it, so I'm not sure what the problem is? I love it, and I figured out itunes way quicker than I would have expected. You could always get the full sized ipod classic. It holds more.

I don't know how old the OP and his wife is, but if they are "older" they may not be able to read small print and screens as well. My mom is 54 and she wouldn't be able to read an ipod nano screen or a regular ipod screen without her reading glasses. Maybe that is what the OP was referring to? Sorry if this is implying that the OP is old, but it's just a guess as to what the problem with the screen might be. It also might be they want to see the screen in the car while driving.

I figured that, it's just that in reality, it's not that much smaller than any of the other players. The difference would be negligible.

I bought my DH a Sandisk 4 meg (or is it gig?...I never can figure that out!LOL) two years ago. He loves it. My DS had a 1- whatever Sandisk and he also loved his, but he just bought an iPod Nano with his birthday money, and handed the Sandisk down to his brother.

The new Sonys have better sound out of the box than the Ipods, and are much less expensive. Not saying that the Ipods cannot sound good, but the Sony comes with better earphones, so it is ready to go with better sound. They are also play-for-sure compatible so you do not have to use Itunes.

New vehicle? Did you wind up with the Escape? Congrats!

If you can find an older Zune, there are generally good deals out there on them. I got a 30 gig the end of last year for $99.00. And, the Zune has a bigger screen than even the video iPod. The down side to the Zune--you can't use iTunes, you need to use the Zune music software which isn't as user-friendly as far as buying songs go. If you're just wanting to convert your old CDs, it is easy as pie.
