My son,9, wants an ipod for Christmas, however he is getting a computer that he wanted. My question is....there is a MP3 player by Phillips, with earphones, charger and few other accessories, 512 MB for $98. I've looked around and this seems to be a good price. Does anyone know about this? I also need any info on MP3 players that you can give. Can you download music from all sites to any player etc... I know nothing about these. ;)

Thanks

I don't know about that player per se, but I did buy my nephew a 1GB Sandisk mp3 player (twice the storage of a 512 MB) for only $80 a few weeks ago at Circuit City. I did some research online and read nothing but good reviews. So, if you are willing to look around you might find a better/similar price for a better player.

Here is the thing, if he asked for an iPod that is what he wants. I remember being a kid and wanting a certian brand of jeans. My Mom got me another (still expensive but not quite as much) brand instead. They sat in my dresser unworn. They were not what I wanted.

You could get him the iPod shuffle. It is right around $100 (512 is $99, 1 GB is $129) and you can order it from the Apple website.

It doesn't have to be the ipod name, he seen a sony in the sale paper he like also, and a sandisk in a store (but it was gone when I went back when he wasn't with me) He just wants a MP3 player and ipod is just the name used. I always buy the name asked for because I know most of the time that is what's wanted. But I know for this it doesn't have to be "ipod" brand.

I just don't know anything about them and am trying to get some info to help me make my decision. Like can you only use itunes with ipods or can you use them with any MP3 player, etc... :flower:

We're a Creative family here

i have the Creative Nomad 30 gb, DD has the muvo 256 with fm transmitter, and I just bought DBF the NANO 516 yesterday.

I have not had a problem with any of them. My Nomad, the hard drive player, has been dropped and still works. The other 2 are flash drive, so they have less risk of damage from falls. I use mine running etc. DD9 uses hers just as a little stereo type thing, she lays in bed listening to it, or walks around the house etc.. The NANO I bought yesterday, will be used while DBF is at work, under his helmet/ear protection (only 1 ear, so he can still hear the guys on the ground)...

I stuck with creative, as the program installed for my Nomad is the same as the others for transfering files etc...and I'm familiar with it, since i got my nomad last year for christmas.I think my nomad was like 289 and the NANA I know I just paid 79.00 at staples with free shipping last week. The muvo I cant remember, but I think it was like 50 bucks at walmart

Bamamom, Am in the same boat with you!. I know nothing about MP3s but wanted to get DD one for x mas. Her friends have IPods but she really hasn't asked for that.

I tried checkiing Yahoo shopping as you can usually find PC worlds top picks on electronic items. You can read their reviews or user reviews of items and see what is good and not so good. IPOD sort of rules right now but there are other brands they like too.

I settled on the Samsung 1GB. It can do 20 hours of music or 8 hours of video has a FM receiver and you can put your own CDs or video with your computer.

So we'll see if that's best or not. Good luck!

Thanks,
I went to Sam's today and was going go ahead and buy that one, well when I got to looking at it, it doesn't have a display that tells you which song....I thought that be pretty important. So now I am back at looking again. I noticed that Sears is going to have a Sandisk 512 tomorrow for 59.99 after $10 instant rebate and then $10 mail in rebate. It has the ear pieces with it. How do you charge these things? Will I have to buy a separate charger and how much do those cost?

I know the iPods charge automatically when you plug them into the computer. I think the other brands should work this way too.

One really important thing to find out about is how long it will play after it is charged up and how long it takes to charge it up. You want to be able to go out and about with them and have them work all day. The Shuffle will play for 12 hours on one charge.

I can't imagine that any of them would have to have a charger to go with them. Some people like to add a car charger- that just depends how you use them.

I am pretty sure you can use iTunes with any Mp3 players or at least most of them. I know you can use it to download and manage your music as well as rip CD's and burn copies as long as you run a fairly current form of Windows. The iTunes program is free.

Also consider the warranty length. Kids can be pretty hard on Mp3 players.
