We will be traveling to WDW in a few weeks and I'd like to get an MP3 player for our 5 year old. (His big brother has one.) Can anyone suggest one that is simple to use, has fairly big buttons for chubby little fingers and plays real mp3s?

I actually got my daughter one of the Disney ones when she was about 2 years old (she's 4 now) because I found one on sale for a good price.

They are called the Disney Mix Sticks. They come in all different designs from Cars to Hanna Montana to Pirates of the Caribbean. I'll post the Amazon link, but you can find them at Toys R Us, Target, etc. Here's some on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_e?url=search-alias=electronics&field-keywords=mix+stick .

It's a regular MP3 player that you can download any songs onto. It has internal memory, but there's also a slot where you can add an SD card to expand the memory to whatever you want.

It's really great for little kids, as there are only a few buttons. There's not a screen or anything like that, but I would not think that a little kid needs a screen anyways.

It has held up great for us! I highly recommend them.

I agree that the younger ones don't "need" a screen. But I happened upon the disney Mix Max which play both music and videos at disneyoutlet.com on clearance for about $35!! I couldn't resist. I got one for my DSD for her 12th b-day tomorrow and DS6 for Christmas. The Mix Sticks were also on clearance. They ship really fast, too!
I asked my teenager's opinion since he's more experienced with them and he thought they were great and age appropriate for both kids. HTH!:thumbsup2

My DD9 has the old Hit Stix in Tinkerbell and loves it and my DD6 just received a HSM one for her birthday and loves it too. They are inexpensive and you can buy SD memory cards for pretty cheap to expand their music library. The only downfall is that when you put the music on to make sure that you mix up the songs so they don't just listen to the same songs over and over again.

We got my 6 yr old nephew an Ipod Shuffle. I wanted to get him the Disney mix sticks but my husband thought that it would be easier for my sister to use with the Itunes library. Our DN loves it and he even let my DD4 borrow it and she could use it no problem. He's had it a month and he loves attaching it to his sleeve and his shorts. I also found that because it's small, it's easier for the kids to hold it and less likely to be dropped.

For last Christmas we bought my dd who was 6 a disney mix stick and for my ds who was 3 a sansa shaker.

I find even for me the mix stick has way to many buttons and prefer the basic sansa shaker. Also the shaker has a built in speaker so you do not need to use earphones if you do not want and it comes in pink, blue or red.

My 3yo can work the sansa all by himself and it is super easy to get music onto it (via a usb cord). I wish I would have saved the extra money I spent on the mix stick and bought my dd a shaker

We bought our kids Sansa Shakers. They are awesome because the kids can either use earphones or the built in speaker. We like that for our youngest (2) because I don't want her listening through the earbuds. They come with some kids songs loaded, but you can put whatever mp3's that you want. You can change songs by shaking, but my kids just use the twist thingy. They run on AAA batteries. We bought them new from buy.com for $12! It was a great special, but you might find them that cheap again. I think that they are regularly $40.

My two youngest kids DS4 & DD9 both have a Kid Tough FP3 Player http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2621&e=mainproduct&acccat=fp3acc&mainid=37225&pid=37225 I found them at Walmart after Christmas on clearance for $35 a piece. We have downloaded a few stories & songs from the FP website, but I have also put all their favorite CD's on there as well. The FP3 player takes a regular SD card to expand the memory (if needed) - it automatically holds two hours worth of music/stories. It is easy for them to use, and you don't have to worry about it breaking if they drop it (it is made very well). They especially love the headphones that come with these. They use the same headphones when playing with their Nintendo DS's.

Their favorite thing though is my 30GB IPod (I have one as well as my oldest daughter) it plays movies as well as songs. It keeps my younger ones entertained for hours - great for plane rides or long car trips, but they are expensive.

My 5 year old loves his ipod shuffle. I got one of those cheap refub ones that everyone was talking about a while back on the budget board.
