if you will be hiring a moving company find out how far in advance they will do a lock on fuel prices. the last time we did a big move the national company we hired locked w/a signed contract at about 60 days out. worked well for us b/c fuel prices took a pretty good increase by the time our move date arrived.
if you will be using a moving company take into consideration how you will live during the window of time they have for delivery. for us it was about a 4 day window of potential delivery dates upon arrival in our new state (company would call us day before they would actually arrive at our home to unload). we ended up staying at a holiday in express near what would be our new home (most cooperative on letting us advise them daily if we would be spending an additional night). in the small uhaul we had rented to schlep behind the car dh drove up we brought all our necessities PLUS items we could work on before the moving truck arrived (TV's-we made an appointment w/the satellite company ahead of time, computers-made an appointment w/internet provider, cleaning products/small tool kit so new home would be ready when stuff was moved in).
