Moving to Florida

Told my family your daughter's 69 allergies wouldn't be a problem near Walt Disney World. I didn't win anything tho. I've got to learn to put money on these bets.

You can search the boards to find other threads by people who want to move closer to the mouse and follow the advice given there.

Out of all the trips we have taken down there, we can only recall her sneezing a handful of times. We'd love to be in Central just because we love Disney so much however we'd take just about anything if it's an improvement on her condition. It would be nice to be close to family in case we need help but my parents are retired and own a condo down there and can come if need be.

As others said, it can take a couple of years for the "new" allergies to show up when you move to a new state.

I think the slant of the thread is -- move to Orlando if living near Disney if your dream, but know that it may not be the allergy fix you're envisioning.

I do agree that you should take her to any potential new home area and see how she fares.

For me, I want to move to FL, because that is one of the few places where my allergies largely disappear. My allergist insists I am wrong and that it's impossible for me to be better in Florida, but that proves how little allergists know because it's like a night and day difference. When we fly into Florida, within 12 hours, 90% of my allergies are gone, regardless of the season we are visiting. Last time, I literally felt a "POP" in my sinuses on the way from the airport to the hotel and the angels began singing because for the first time in 8 months, I could breathe through my nose and my eyes stopped itching constantly. When we drive down, I usually feel a more gradual cessation of my allergies and opening of my sinuses once we get past Valdosta, Georgia.

This, It seems you're bent on moving to Orlando regardless, as far as jobs, I think it's going to be difficult. Many many people move to Orlando for the same reasons. (Wanting to be near WDW) so the job market may suffer from that. To me, if your daughter's allergies are severe enough that you yourself cannot work, I'd be hesitant to uproot things and deal with loss of insurance. If your daughter's allergies are this severe, is it wise to do that? Have you considered getting a job with benefits that could cover your daughter's allergy shots?

It seems extreme that the only way you can help your daughter's allergies is to move to Orlando.

sorry your DD suffers so, and hopefully FL is the answer. As far as your DH, since he has past Gov clearance/exp perhaps looking into civilian positions for miitary based companies? His background seems like it would fit several types of companies. I think Ocala may have some along that line or up near the panhandle/Tallahasee area which may be too far for you from family?. I would have your DH contact a Recruiter explaining your situation and see what direction he/she can offer for salary info, whether contract or permanent hire is most likely. I can't hurt as time seems to be pretty important. I would also speak to a realtor of the option of renting your current place vs selling , just as a back up in case things don't work out. So many head to FL and do their best but only make it a few years due to jobs etc. Many DO make it work tho, I am just saying to lessen the stress of selling, finances. Would branching into cyber security be too much of a stretch? Information Security is a field that has growth potential and possible even the ability to work remotely with the right company.

I know you want to move to Florida, and your husband is willing to quit his job and look for a new one to get you there, but I have to say that my son has lots of allergies here in Florida. You know what has helped tremendously? Allergy shots. Since your husband is looking for a new job, maybe he can find one where you are now and have different insurance that can get your daughter the treatment that she so needs. Then when she is grown and out on her own, she can have more flexibility in her own travels.

I have to tell you that my husband who never had allergies in PA has developed allergies here in Florida that didn't show up in the first years we were here but have become worse every year.

On the other hand, I did used to have allergies up North and although I still do some extent they are better for me here, so you really never know.

I don't really see what the huge deal is with insurance if the husband finds a new job first. They'd be able to get insurance through the new job or know before committing that insurance isn't offered and go private.

Any job I've ever had allowed a new employee to sign up for insurance within 30 days of employment or proof of loss of previous insurance.

OP, If your daughter's main problems are ragweed and bluegrass, she won't encounter much of those in Florida. Bluegrass doesn't thrive here and I haven't seen ragweed in the 11 years I've lived here.

As for the job, has your husband thought about contacting a headhunter to do the search for him? It is so much easier than trying to find places and apply long distance. Good luck!

Most of her allergies are KY based and we visit Florida for a week and a half twice a year and have been there through each season and she has had no problems why we were there. Her Ragweed and her bluegrass allergies are her worse ones. Her allergist has already cross-referenced her allergies with what could be bothersome in Florida and she had little to no reaction to those except for of course her cat allergy. Which we don't have one so it'll only really be friends of hers that she'd be effected by that.

Talk to your allergist about the "honeymoon" phase of allergies.

This happens to my son too but mainly because of when we travel. So, our pollen is horrific in May/June and again in September. We used to always go to Disney in May and when we left, he was miserable. After a day in Florida he was 100% better. Why, because their pollen season was in February/March.

Additionally, there is a "honeymoon" phase with allergies so I'm pretty sure that if we moved there, he'd be miserable in February/March versus May/June and after about a year or two, he would develop allergies to the "new" stuff in Florida because that's just his nature.

I can't speak to allergies at all, but as far as jobs, I've been browsing jobs in Orlando myself. We're not quite ready to move South, but I do look occasionally just to see what's out there and what the job market is like. My background is in business/risk management (banking), so I generally filter my searches with this. I'm actually surprised by the number of IT/technical positions that are returned in my searches. I know software engineering is a bit different, but just in banking alone, there's several mobile/digital product management jobs in the area that I keep coming across. A few with NBC Universal too. Also some IT project management openings. I tend to use indeed.com the most. Good luck!

For IT jobs have your husband research the Melbourne area (Brevard County) - not far from Disney. The Harris Corporation and a lot of other big companies are housed in that area. It's a nice area to live and you have some great schools and colleges in that area. If you want on the coast check out Satellite Beach or Indiatlantic. You also have possibilities for him at Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral.

Florida absolutely has ragweed. Here's a great article written just two years ago discussing how allergy season was beginning earlier AGAIN that year. Here are a couple interesting tidbits from the article:

Inland areas are worse for allergy sufferers than those along the coast.

Orlando was named by Pollen.com on Wednesday as the worst place in the United States for allergies.

The National Allergy Bureau on Sunday reported high levels of tree pollen and mold in Sarasota.

Ragweed is not as high — not yet, anyway. It usually peaks later in the spring.

Ah, ragweed. One of our favorite allergens here in Fl. I think some PPs have made good points--especially about how our allergy season differs from other areas. Right after Valentine's Day our allergy season kicks in, even though much of the country is still covered in snow. I think if the only reason you're moving to Florida is to avoid allergies, you really need to have a backup plan in place. There are lots of reasons to move here, but getting away from allergies is probably one of the most complicated. It's more than just whether you feel good when you visit Florida. It's kind of like how people come here in February and think the weather is terrific. But then you spend an entire year here and realize how miserable nine months of summer can really be. But it's still better than snow! ;-)

Her allergies are one of the main reason why we do want to move and like I've said before we don't have to be in the Orlando area only if my husband got the job at Disney would we move there. We'd like to be around Deltona or maybe Lakeland. We've been feeling a pull to move to Florida for the past year, and when her allergist said a move there would improve her condition it felt like the push we needed to take a serious look at moving. It doesn't help much that we're snowed in currently with 15 inches and Thursday is going to be -25 degrees with windchill. We prefer much more warmer climate our girls have also asked several times if we could move to Florida.

And just to be clear our daughter will not be without insurance as she has two. One through her biological father's company and one through my husbands. And we will not move without a job that offers quality insurance. He's actually quite happy at his current job and will only leave if it's for a job in Florida.

When I lived in NH allergies never bothered me unless the pollen count was off the charts. Now that I live in FL my allergies are horrible!! I have to take medication every day for them. I would suggest a trial run for sure!

We are not moving any more North than what we already are, it's too cold as it is here. My body literally aches when its cold outside, I can't do any colder than what we have here. This is another factor that we are taking into consideration for a move down south. And I want to stay within 13 hours of KY due to her biological father will not be moving and I'd like for him to have more than just summer visitations and anything farther away would not be feasible .

Is her dad okay with you moving away with her? If not, you might not be leaving...

FL is a horrible state for allergies - I've lived here all my life and suffer GREATLY. I would move out west to an arrid state.
