Well, we just found out this week that we are moving to Florida in a couple of months! Dh's work is taking care of everything move related so that helps with some of the stress, leaving me to worry about other things. I know I will have lots of questions over the next few months, but the one thing I'm wondering about right now is the FL school schedules. If anyone can give me an idea of what the school year looks like in general.... coming from MI, we don't usually go back to school until after Labor Day. In general this wouldn't matter to me in the least and we would just roll with it. However, I have my oldest graduating and starting college this fall.... in MI and my youngest (only have 2) will be starting 5th grade in the fall. As well, we have a niece getting married in the middle of August that we need to be in MI for. Hoping to not have to make too many trips back to MI to get things settled, but wanting the transition for DS10 to be as smooth as possible. Thanks for bearing with me. SOOO excited about the move... cannot wait to get my AP!!!!

A quick Google search (Duval County school schedule 2011-2012) tells me that Duval County starts back on Aug 22. Every county sets its own schedule, so I suggest you google the one for your specific county.

Just a something to think about, if you move right after school gets out your DD won't know anyone there and it is going to make for a LONG summer. If you wait until closer to school starting time, you can do a lot of "tourist" things to fill the time, especially since you have this wedding anyway. If you have to move, maybe consider moving so she attends her new school for a couple weeks before it lets out for the summer so she can meet some kids and have someone to play with over the summer. From previous threads here, FL schools tend to get out much earlier than we do up here-mid May even for some, and start early Aug. It might be worth moving May 1st or whatever.

There is a state law on the books that no public school can start more than two weeks before Labor Day each year.

I would like to wait as long as possible to make the move but we need to be there by July 1st. And moving sooner isn't possible because of our oldest's graduation. We will be going to FL in about 3-4 weeks to find a house and check out schools, so I'm hoping to maybe find some kind of program to get him into so he has an opportunity to make some friends before school starts in the fall.

Our tentative schedule is out for next school year (still needs to be approved by the School Board), teachers go back Aug. 3rd and I think students are back on Aug. 9th...early! Also, there is a rule in place that school districts can't start more than 2 weeks before Labor Day, but apparently "A-rated" school districts are able to get around that somehow. :confused3 Hence, we are starting quite early!:headache:
