Good Morning to all and Happy Memorial Day Weekend! :)

I am not sure where to post this question so I will give it a shot here. I value the DISboards questions and answers and love all the information that everyone has to share.

My SIL and her family are looking to move to FL in the next year, near Orlando and my MIL will be going with her because she lives with them (she has a MIL apt. at her house).

After a lot of consideration, my family including my children with their families as pondered the thought of moving as well, since there are no great holds on us here in VA (Hampton Roads area, in Chesapeake). :) My DH is a retired police Lt., and I am a lifelong homemaker. My DD will graduate from grad school in HOPEFULLY in 2013 and be getting married (her fiance will graduate the same time) and my DS is a HS special education teacher and DIL is a stay at home mom, she works from home.

We could go anywhere from Charleston, SC, to Orlando FL, so my questions for you out there are any suggestions on living near WDW. :tinker:Do any of you live in that area? How are the teaching jobs in that area? Do any of you out there work for WDW or Disney? Then if not near WDW what would be your ideas on the Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA area?

We have plenty of time to think this through, but our family has been through a lot in the past 7 years and we feel that a change would be good for us. A new chapter in out lives.

Thanks so much for your imput and insights on all the many topics that are here on the DISboards.

I live in Orlando, and the job market is not great here, and the school systems here are really struggling from what I have heard budget wise. Rick Scott just signed the states budget and I saw it means cutting 4500 jobs in the Education system. So while I'm sure it won't be impossible to find a job it won't be an easy process.

We like it here, but in terms of when I am done getting my Degree will we be staying? Depends on if I can find a job or not but I have to be realistic in knowing most likely will have to have a broad search because of the cuts that are getting made all over. Not just in Florida.

Good luck with Moving.

You do get nice dicounts from DW for living in fla., If you do move hear and plan on buying a home stay away from the coast as Home Owners Ins. is pricey if your like 50 miles or closer to the water.

I live in the panhandle, North of Panama city. cost of living is pretty low hear but you have to drive a a long ways sometimes as not much buisness in this area.

a 250,000 house (which I think I have heard is aveage cost of home in USA) would be a mantion in this area. We still get 4 sesons hear IE it gets below freezing in winter. Belave it or not some people dont like to live were it never gets cold.

I live in Windermere. It is a little town in the heart of greater Orlando. I am about a five minute drive from WDW property. I love living in this area.

I do not currently work for Disney. I have worked for Disney in the past, but prefer to remain retired. While there are some great things about working for Disney, it is not all pixie dust. It is a job. There are good days and bad days. My sister is currently a Disney CM and really enjoys it.

Finding a teaching job in Florida, right now, is difficult. Many teachers have lost their jobs and more lay offs to come. My daughter has a teaching degree. She lost her job last November. After many attempts to find something, she has decide to let it go for the time being. Instead, she is going back to school to get her Masters. Many of her friends, who graduated at the same time with teaching degrees, have not been able to find teaching jobs after a year of searching. It is just a tough time to be a teacher.

If you have any specific questions about this area, I'd be happy to try to answer them.

I'm going to jump onto this thread if no one minds. We are also talking about moving to FL next fall. I've been looking at homes in the Orlando area for the past month or so. I've found quite a few that are nice and aren't to terribly priced. I paid nowhere near 250 thousand for my home in Texas so I'm actually finding many that are in my price range. :)

I live in SC, but in the upstate, not near Charleston. Teaching jobs are just as hard to find in SC as they are in FL. Most districts started furlough days last year, and many are laying off teachers now. I'm not sure how hard they've been hit in Charleston, but your DS could have a very hard time finding something. I've heard that GA is just as bad as SC, and I know NC is even worse off.

Luckily because your sons degree is in ESE he should be able to find a job in the Orlando area easier than most teachers. Elementary Ed forget about finding a job. Orange County has faired better than most other counties because a tax increase was OKed. There are 10 openings in lake county for ESE teachers. Whether they have all already been filled or not is another question, but because your son is ESE he should be able to find one by November, once new teachers realize ESE isn't for them.

I am moving to Lakeland, FL -- which is about mid-way between Tampa and Orlando (say about 40 min to each). I am currently stuck in NJ trying to sell our house, while DH is living at the new house in Lakeland.

I decided to check out Lakeland based on some opinions from friends and people from this board. It's a great town. It's got mansions and trailers. It's got a great, quaint Downtown area, tons of lakes, tons of family activities. Everything is clean, the people we've come in contact with have all been friendly. Even the area that is considered "ghetto" soooooo isn't, compared to NJ ghettos! I can't wait til my house sells so I can get down there for good.

DH works in Tampa. I have no idea about teaching jobs. I have seen a TON of help wanted signs down there though (mostly food/retail) and there are jobs listed on the job search sites.

Hi, www.city-data.com can be very helpful, click on to discussion forums. Many locals post there. I live in central NY and teaching jobs are hard to find up here too. NJ I hope you find a buyer, Lakeland sounds very nice.
