Moving from NY To TX

After my Disney Wedding in May I will be moving wth my new hubby to Ft. Hood. Any suggestions on the long distance move, job oppurtunities, help setting things up in the new area (DMV, licenses, etc etc.) or any advice at all about TX? You guys always have great advice on things!!!

Bumping this for you. I don't know what the job opportunities are in the Ft. Hood area. My cousin has lived there for years and works as a nurse practitioner. She had been an Army nurse. I have only traveled through the area the past few years on my way to Austin or San Antonio. I don't remember if there are any DISers who live in the area or not. You will be arriving just before summer so prepare yourself for hot weather!

I can't tell you a lot about Waco. We lived in San Antonio.

Texas: NO STATE INCOME TAX! Yippee! And while in the military, you can keep Texas as your place of residency, even after you move away. We're currently Texas residents who live in Mississippi.

Most of the DMV stuff can be done online during renewal...but the lines weren't that bad when I got my plates, etc.

O.K. as a fellow Long Islander who moved to texas with tears in her eyes, then moved back from Texas with tears in her eyes and now has a great big smile because we will be retiring in texas just as soon as dh can, all I can say is We LOVE Texas, yes its hot, yes it has tornadoes, and fire ants, but gheesh, your dollar goes so much further there, great place to raise a family, so much to do there, what did I miss from Long Island, the beach, bagels, good italian food. greek diners that stay open late. Not too much is open late in Texas, not like being from the city that never sleeps etc. Texas has great mexican food, barbeque, totally nice people, you are moving to the bible belt, so dont be surpised with what you hear, people have manners, yes and no, hold doors open etc. We usually go see the NY Yankess play at the Ballpark in Arlington ever summer, missed last summer. I know the poster Amazing Grace has just moved back to Texas, her dh is military, you might want to pm her. As far as the DMV, I know we took a test to get our license there and the dmv lady apologized to me for the "line". That line had like 2 peopole in front of me. gheesh, obviously they have never seen a dmv line in NY. If I get a number to wait less than 50 I am happy. Best of luck. Remember LI is only a southwest flight away to MacArthur.

Hey I had a Disney Wedding too and married my soldier and now live in Killeen. I had a hell of a time trying to find a job in this area. Killeen does not have many opportunities for college grads and I now commute over 75 minutes to work in Austin. We're going to be moving to an Austin suburb in three weeks so I'll be closer to work. There is a LiveJournal community for Ft Hood. I found two great friends off that community. If you have any specific questions just let me know!

What type of job would you be looking for? I was wondering if you look into working for Baylor in Waco.

You're pretty decently located there. You're not all that far from DFW or Austin or Hill Country and there is plenty to do in the area. I'll just go ahead and say an early "Welcome to Texas!"

Texas: NO STATE INCOME TAX! Yippee!

Just realize that there is sales tax on a lot more than at least I was used to, coming from Massachusetts. The first time they charged me sales tax when I bought clothes, what a shock! Be prepared-Texas gets hot like you don't experience up North. What I did before moving that really helped was I ordered the local newspaper (maybe at least on Sunday) for a few months to help familiarize myself with the local goings on.

Just an FYI, when you go to do the drivers license and license plates, you have to do your plates first. At the time my car was in DH's name (he had to buy it while I was out of town for work after wrecking my car, long story) and I had to sign a paper saying I didn't have any cars in my name to register.

Good luck! I've never lived in Texas, but I love it there. I'll be in Austin in two weeks to cover a swim meet. I envy you a bit! (and I envy the incredibly nice house you'll eventually get, if you stay in Texas long-term! The housing prices are literally less than half of what you're used to in LI)
